Groundbreaking Nikon Cameras

Nikon have just released details of 4 new digital cameras – including the world’s first digital camera with an integrated projector. This radical new feature is certainly cutting edge technology. Combined with the irrefutable feeling that the digital camera market has been running very thin on innovation recently; have Nikon just shaken everything up?

Nikon Coolpix S1000pj

The Nikon Coolpix S1000pj is the leader of the new quartet; it features an integrated VGA projector, 28-140mm VR lens, 12 megapixel sensor, and 2.7” LCD screen. Nikon have squeezed all this into a camera which is approximately 23mm deep and weighs a mere 155g (excluding battery).

Tell me about the S1000pj projector!

The integrated projector can display images sized between 5 to 40 inches with a throw distance of 26cm to 2m (the distance from the projector lens to the projection surface). The brightness is rated 10 lumens which probably means you’ll need to switch the lights off (cheap multimedia projectors are 1000+ lumens).

A wireless remote control is supplied, so you can place the Coolpix S1000pj on a table and sit back to enjoy the day’s photos with family & friends. On a full battery charge the S1000pj can project for one hour, plus there is an optional EH-62F AC adapter available for extended viewings.

The Nikon Coolpix S640 features a 28-140mm VR lens and 12 megapixel sensor, similar specs to the S1000pj and S70. However neither the touch screen nor VGA projector make an appearance, the S640 takes a different approach: Speed.

Nikon state the Coolpix S640 has the fastest start up time in the compact digital camera industry and autofocus ‘as fast as a digital SLR’. The AF speed claim is interesting – Nikon claim it’s comparable to the D40 – that’s exciting stuff for a compact digital camera!
