Pentax has furnished its award-winning K-series of DSLRs with a new member, the Pentax K-S1.

The Pentax K-S1 is designed for those looking to step up from smartphone photography, with the promise of higher functionality and better image quality, blended with a ‘compact, progressive body design’. As part of this design, the camera makes use of LED lights around its power switch, mode dial, OK button and grip to indicate the camera’s status.

The K-S1 offers a newly developed 20.1MP APS-C sensor capable of capturing images at up to ISO 51200 (ISO 102,400 exp). This sensor, which lacks an anti-aliasing filter, is combined with a number of features common to previous Pentax models, such as the AA (anti-aliasing) filter simulator seen on the Pentax K-3 and the long-standing shake-reduction mechanism to enable sharper images.

The camera is powered by a PRIME MII processing engine, which allows full HD video recording with stereo sound, at a choice of frame rates up to 30p, as well as a maximum burst rate of 5.4fps. The K-S1 goes on to offer a glass pentaprism viewfinder with an approximate 100% field of view, as well as a 3in, 921k-dot LCD screen beneath it that employs a newly designed graphical user interface. The 11-point SAFOX IXi+ focusing system, meanwhile, contains 9 cross-type points for greater accuracy and speed.

Other notable features include a maximum shutter speed of 1/6000sec and a choice of ten Effects that include three new options (Infrared, Fresh and Fade Colour). The camera also boasts a lens aberration-compensation system said to help compensate for the effects of chromatic aberration, distortion, peripheral brightness and diffraction.
