Olympus E-M1 Mark II vs Olympus E-M1: What Are the Differences?

The new Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II is the new flagship in the Olympus CSC lineup, and it comes with a feature-set to reflect that. The camera makes a few key advancements on its predecessor, and promises to be a significant upgrade and a powerful imaging machine in its own right.

While the Mark II retains more or less the same button layout as that of its predecessor, a larger grip has been added to improve comfort and convenience of handling, especially when using telephoto lenses.

It also adds an extra SD card slot, expanding its versatility and its capabilities as a workhorse camera. For pros and serious enthusiasts who need their camera to shoot fast and cope under pressure, the E-M1 Mark II looks more than capable of delivering.

Its weatherproofing has been upgraded as well, with improved weather-seals to allow the camera to cope in harsh conditions.

The new camera gets a resolution bump from the older model, and also benefits from Olympus’s 50 MP High Res shot mode, which stitches together several shots into an ultra-high resolution image.

Burst shooting too gets a significant upgrade. Where the original E-M1 was able to reach a maximum burst rate of 10 fps, the new model ratchets up to 60 fps when using the silent electronic shutter. This is supported by a new AF system with 121 points – an improvement on the original’s 81 – which carries new tracking modes to help it cope with fast-moving subjects.

All in all, the new Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II has marked itself out as a fast, durable camera that can take on fast-action and moving subjects with the confidence that pro photographers demand. It’s a seriously respectable flagship for the firm, and we’re looking forward to delving into it further.
