Canon 8x25 IS Binoculars Review

Canon EOS 60D Review

15 Dec 2010 - We were trying to work out who the 60D is aimed at and judging by what weʼve seen so far, quite a wide range. Sounds like more of a conclusion than a mid-review statement, but it needs quantifying long before we get to the end piece. I think this is where Canon have been quite clever, the 60D is accessible from all angles and from all levels, whether you’re moving up, buying a main or even a second body.

Key features of the Canon EOS 60D

  • 18 MP APS-C CMOS sensor
  • Advanced creative features
  • Vari-angle 7.7cm (3.0”) 3:2 ratio LCD
  • Full HD movies
  • DIGIC 4
  • ISO 100-6400, H:12800
  • Up to 5.3fps shooting for up to 58 JPEGs
  • 9-point cross type AF System

18 MP CMOS sensor - Ideal for those who want to create large, poster-size prints – or crop images without losing any of the detail necessary for printing – EOS 60D’s 18MP CMOS sensor is outstanding in low light, and produces images with incredibly low noise.

Advanced creative features - Use your imagination to enhance your stills with a range of creative filters such as toy camera effect or soft focus. These filters can be applied to RAW and JPEG images giving you creative control after the shot has been taken. Basic+ allows you to apply a creative ambience, when shooting in the Basic modes, giving you creative control without extensive photographic knowledge.

Vari-angle 7.7cm (3.0”) 3:2 Clear View LCD - Perform detailed checks on images and video or shoot unique or awkward angles with a 7.7cm (3.0”) 3:2 Clear View LCD screen, which features an ultra-high 1,040,000 dots for increased clarity. Switch to Live View mode and use real-time visual feed to help capture the best angle.

Full HD movie recording - The EOS 60D combines exceptional still shooting with the ability to shoot Full HD (1080p) video. To satisfy your creativity the EOS 60D features full manual control and selectable frame rates. You can also shoot high speed 50/60fps movies at 720P for when the action is really fast. An HDMI connection allows High Definition playback of footage and images on any HDTV. With HDMI enabled TV sets playback can be controlled using the remote control.

DIGIC 4 - Canon’s DIGIC 4 processor works with the CMOS sensor to deliver 14-bit image processing, for smooth gradations and natural looking colours. DIGIC 4 also powers advanced Noise Reduction when shooting at higher ISO speeds, plus split-second start-up times and near-instant image review after shooting.

High ISO for low light - When light levels fall, the EOS 60D offers an ISO range of up to 6400 – expandable to 12800 for those environments where using flash is undesirable.

iFCL metering system - A 63-zone dual layer metering sensor analyses Focus, Colour and Luminance information, providing accurate and consistent metering.

Quick Control screen - Accessible using a dedicated button it provides easy access to commonly used functions, ensuring that you are ready to take the shot as it happens.

Create a shooting system as unique as you are - The EOS 60D is compatible with Canon’s full range of EF and EF-S lenses and EX-series Speedlites.

Key features of the Canon 100mm F2.8

  • Canon high performance macro
  • Life size image reproduction (1:1)
  • UD lens element
  • Focus distance limiter
  • 8 blade circular aperture for beautiful creative blur effects
  • 58mm filter size
  • Ring type USM AF motor
  • Optional tripod collar

Macro with extended reach The EF 100mm F/2.8 Macro USM is a medium telephoto lens with a macro feature providing a 1.0x magnification. With eight aperture blades, creative background blur is possible to help make the subject stand out. The lens features a focusing limiter switch which limits the focus range to improve AF speed.

Ring USM auto focus with manual override Canon’s ring USM auto focus system employs ultrasonic frequency vibrations for fast, accurate and virtually silent operation. Full-time manual focus override, via a large ring that does not rotate during auto focus, allows photographers to fine-tune focusing instantly.

Super Spectra coating Super Spectra coatings help ensure accurate colour balance and high contrast, and suppress flare and ghosting by absorbing light that might be reflected off internal lens elements and image sensor.

Technical Jargon - What does it all mean?

EOS - Stands for Electro Optical System.

SLR - Stands for Single Lens Reflex: Means the camera has one lens that is used for both composing the frame and capturing the image to memory.

EF-S - Are designed specifically for cameras with an APS-format sensor, such as the Canon 60D, 1100D, 600D, etc. The 'S' stands for 'short back focus', which means that the rear element of the lens is closer to the image sensor. Cameras that support the Canon EF-S lens mount can also take the Canon EF lens mount.

APS-C - A type of digital camera sensor with an integral x1.6 magnification factor. This means that for all lenses (Canon, Sigma & Tamron) you have to x the focal length of your lens by the crop factor, which is 1.6 (Nikon 1.5). For example - Canon 50mm x 1.6 = 80mm. For a camera with a cropped sensor the field of view you actually get is 80mm.

CMOS - Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor – A type of image sensor used in many digital cameras.

I bought this camera as an upgrade to my old Canon 350D. I wanted to stick with Canon because the 350D has always delivered nice results and I had been generally happy with it but times have moved on and technology has advanced in leaps and bounds so I decided it was time to bring my camera gear up to date. The 60D offers stunning picture quality especially combined with the 50mm prime I purchased with the camera. The fold out LCD panel is a godsend allowing crystal clear manual focus and a whole range of amazing features. On th eodd occasion I like to go back to using the traditional viewfinder which still displays a huge amount of information but also is so much clearer and brighter than the 350D. I do find it a little heavy compared to the 350D but for the amount of added features I think the sacrifice is worth it. One thing I am looking forward too is messing about with the built-in wireless control for my Speedlite 580 EX II so I can experiment with off camera flash.

The 60D probably wouldn't meet the requirements of a pro photographer but it has everything and more that a photography enthusiast could want for. I don't think I have any need to upgrade now for a very long time indeed. If you're thinking about buying one... Do it! You won't regret it.

I bought this camera to take pictures of my growing family. Im no pro, so its good that the controls are relatively straight forward. I can get as techy as I like, or just leave it in programme mode. It is fast and delivers amazing picture quality. Maybe I dont love it as much as my subjects, but I really do like it an awful lot!

I have upgraded from the 400D. I considered the 7D however the tilting LCD and price swayed me to get this camera.
I have been using it for about 3 months now and I cannot be happier with it. My pros are the very quick autofocus, tilting LCD (as I use the HD video recording), great quality photos (fantastic even when using high ISO).
I am not concerned about the slightly faster burst rate of the 7D (5.3fps is fast enough) or the fact it has a magnesium alloy body (this camera feels great in the hand compared to the lighter and smaller 600D, yet is light enough for everyday use.

I had to buy new memory cards as it uses SD cards over the CF cards I had for the 400D however I would have had to buy faster speed CF cards if I brought the 7D to cope with the video and burst rate in anycase so nothing lost. It will make a difference for pros wanting to get a backup body which I feel is why they would ignore this model.

With regards peoples comments about the buttons I do not share their opinions. Over the 400D I find the top display and the buttons handy and easy to use. My only 'issue' (you just get used to it) is the locking dial to switch between shooting modes. I shoot in manual so the only time I switch is to use video, which means the dial (which doesn't go all the way round) has to move quite some distance.

In summary this is a great camera for photo and video. The improvement over my 400D is unbelievable. I'm glad I have this over the 7D having seen that many reviewers find the picture quality between these two identical.

moved up to this from a 400d, the 400 was great and i took some of my best photos with it, but was ready to move up to the next level, especially as the type of picture i have been taking is changing, i shoot a lot of fast moving indoor sports now it seems! the 60d combined with my first prime lenses is really helping me get some good shots in challenging light conditions, i love this camera

                • Lacks photovideo switch
                • No lens micro adjustment
                • Only 9 focusing points
                • Single SD card slot

                Best Uses

                • Advance amateur
                • Pro backup

Was planning to get the 7D in the beginning. But because of the lack of stock, I opted for the 60D instead. The big consideration for me is the lens micro adjustment function and the shelf life of the 7D. I gave the 60D a go this time and have a mixed feeling about it.

With the right lenses, 60D can really produce some nice photos as good as any other top end DSLRs. But I am still not quite used to the control layout of the 60D after handling it for 2 weeks. The focusing is fast, especially when it is searching for its subjects in AF servo mode. Metering is accurate in all modes. There are also a lot of flexibility of photo quality adjustments as well. 5fps is not too bad for capturing fast moving objects. I would say 60D gets a pass with the combination of AF speed and FPS, but I do not mind having the 7D instead in this case.

The best features of the 60D is the articulated screen and the remote flash control. You will know what I mean when you shoot a lot of macro and portraiture shots. Video mode is typical high quality Canon, but I wish they put a dedicated button instead of placing it on the stupid dial. The camera is quiet in use. The focusing screen is interchangeable, which is a big plus for this non-pro camera.

All in all, a rather solid DSLR with hundreds of features, although not the perfect one yet.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have upgraded to this camera from the 1000D and what a difference, the 1000D is not a bad camera dont get me wrong, it has been my best friend for a few years, but the 60D is in a whole different league, its like the Porsche to a fiesta, one day I may upgrade to the Ferrari (1d) but until then I will be very happy with this.
As a side not the video is stated as 29.97fps at 1080 and 60fps at 720, these are for NTSC format, when using pal they are 25 and 50 respectively

                    Best Uses

                    • General photography

I was looking at the Canon 7D, and the stock of bodies ran out, so i decided to go for the 60D instead.
I've upgraded from a 350D, and all i can say is what a fab camera.
The tilty swivel screen is a bonus, meaning really low shots without laying on the floor.

Would of liked 8fps like the 7D, but 5.3 will suffice.
Sorry, no comments on the video, as i use this camera as a camera,i am a photographer, and have no interest in videography.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
