The Canon BG-E8 is the battery/vertical control grip for the Canon EOS 550D, 600D, 650D and 700D digital SLR cameras. It allows two BP-E8 batteries to be used simultaneously to allow for longer shooting times. The Canon BG-E8 also provides a more comfortable grip when using the EOS 550D and 600D in the vertical/portrait orientation as key controls such as the shutter release button are duplicated on the grip to provide easier use when the camera is rotated through 90 degrees. The grip will also accept AA batteries via the included battery holder.

The BG-E8 not only increases your shooting time between battery changes, it also puts the shutter and exposure controls at your fingertips when shooting in portrait orientation. The grip helps balance the body when used with heavier lenses too. The extra juice really comes into its own when shooting movies which really consume battery power rapidly. Not forgetting the Canon build quality. I would recommend going for this rather than third party alternatives. The BG-E3 grip I had never gave me any trouble in seven years of being bolted to my 350D. That was a good enough reason to get the BG-E8 for my 650D!
