This solid, super-telephoto lens with rotating zoom design is ideal for a wide range of applications, including sport, portraiture, wildlife, pet and travel photography. More
Who is it for?
The EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM is a compact yet powerful telephoto zoom ideal for covering wildlife, sport and action in even the most challenging environments. Featuring advanced optical engineering, a new 4-stop Image Stabilizer and excellent weather-sealing, it offers stunning image quality in a body that has been designed with ease-of-use in mind. When used on cameras featuring APS-C sized sensors, the EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM offers angles of view equivalent to a 160-640mm on a full-frame camera.
Stay sharp, whatever the light
The EF 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6L IS II USM delivers sharp, high-contrast images, using Fluorite and Super Ultra-low Dispersion (Super UD) lens elements to tackle artefacts and distortion. A three-mode Image Stabiliser guards against blur from camera shake, allowing handheld shooting with shutter speeds up to 4 stops slower than normal.
Fear no flare
Shoot into the light confident that Canon’s multi-layered Air Sphere Coating (ASC) will protect against flare, ghosting and reduced contrast. ASC uses a multi-layer coating to reduce reflections including a layer of nanosised air spheres deposited on the lens surface to slow down light more gradually as it enters the lens, this prevents the internal reflections that reduce image quality.
Different photographers work in different ways. Use the Zoom Touch Adjustment ring to set the amount of resistance felt when zooming the lens: a light touch is ideal when you’ll be working quickly in a fast-changing situation. On the other hand, you might want to stiffen or lock the zoom mechanism when you don’t want the focal length to change accidentally.
Fast focus when you want it
Enjoy fast USM autofocus that locks on accurately and in near-silence. Full-time manual focus override allows precise adjustment without taking your camera away from your eye. The EF 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6L IS II USM focuses down to 0.98m, letting you react to subjects that come unexpectedly close.
Protected from the great outdoors
Keep shooting even in tough weather conditions. As an L-series lens, the EF 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6L IS II USM is sealed against dust and moisture, so you can keep shooting even when conditions turn bad. A fluorine coating on the lens’ front element repels dirt making the lens easy to clean.
Compact size and weight
The EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM is the perfect optic for photographers on the move. With compact dimensions it takes up minimal room in a kit bag and can be relied upon to perform the moment it’s fitted to a camera. Its relatively light weight and superb quality builds on EF lens heritage and continues Canon’s excellent reputation for usability and performance.
The EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM has been designed to exceed expectations with a focal length range of particular appeal to landscape as well as sports, action and wildlife photographers.
Instinctive user controls
The new ET-83D lens hood for the EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM features an access window, useful for adjusting filters.

A tripod collar is now integrated with the barrel to provide smoother, seamless rotation while the tripod foot itself can even be removed completely.
A new, dedicated lens hood, ET-83D, allows the use of rotating polarising filters without the need to remove the hood, thanks to the inclusion of an access window.

NEW Optical Image Stabilisation
The EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM’s Image Stabiliser (IS) system has been completely redesigned and now offers up to 4-stops of compensation. It also features the three levels of stabilisation, found on Canon Mark II telephoto-zoom lenses:

Beware the dust the twisr action makes no difference
About Me Hobbyist/Enthusiast
Comments about Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS II USM Lens:
Upgrade from mark 1 version and it is greatly improved in terms of stabilisation and sharpness. However there seems to be a misconception about zoom lenses and dust. This lens changes its physical length and therefore too its volume of air contained within, this in effect makes the lens a pump that sucks and blows, if there is dust in the air it will suck it in whether it is push pull or rotate to zoom, unfortunately after a years use mine reduires a clean out to remove dust and there's lots of it despite being a very careful user.Unfortunately the only way dust can be eliminated is to have a particle filter where any air gets sucked in.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The WEX specification correctly states that this lens is compatible with both 1.4x and 2x Canon Extenders. However this information relates to fit and exposure. In order to avoid disappointment WEX should remind customers that AF is possible with the 1.4x Extender only with the EOS1 series, 7DMkII, 5DMkIII (with firmware 1.2.1) and the 5DS camera bodies. AF is not possible with the 2x Extender with any camera body. These details are available on the Canon website.

This is a great lens, albeit a little heavy on my 5D mkiii with battery grip. It focuses fast, sharp, and works great with the canon 1.4 extender. I have yet to give it some serious use, but I am impressed with the results so far.

Purchased this with a easy trade in of my old Sigma 120-400 with Wex.Delighted with purchase. Still getting used to this lens, but so far I have found it fantastic. Its not too heavy, easy to use and produces crisp and sharp pictures.I'm no expert, but it is a step up in all respects to the Sigma - and I was a fan of my old lens. Other previous owners of the original 100-400 from Canon will be able to compare like for like, but my experience has been nothing but good. Highly recommended.

I've only been using this lens for a month or so but have been amazed at the results I'm getting. The focussing is lightning fast and very accurate. Low light/slow shutter speed shots have come out surprisingly crisp. It replaced my previous Canon zoom and it's streets ahead. It may relatively expensive (over £1800) but worth every penny.

New and Improved :)

I love the Mk2 100-400 :) actually I loved my Mk1 as well and although I was very lucky and had a sharp one it, like many of them, was a bit 'soft' at the top end of it's focus. So I traded it in for the Mk2 and although I have not had the opportunity to use it much, from what I have done I love it. I much prefer the twist grip zoom extension to the pull-push type that the Mk1 was - and the whole build quality feels much better and significantly sturdier.I use my 100-400mm for wildlife photography both in the field as well as a lot of captive animal photography in zoos and safari parks - it is ideal for this as the low light performance is very good indeed and when combined with the 5D it makes for a super system.Yes the lens is chunky and heavy in comparison to say the 70-300mm but the are not in the same league performance wise. If you are looking for a longer reach and versatile zoom then this a great choice for you.

Mainly bought for wildlife but want to try and explore all capabilities of this lens.Weight of the lens may be a drawback for some but am also getting more used to using a monopod and bean bag supports.

Exceeded my expectations
By Bobby A
Excellent lens, the zoom adjustment ring eliminates lens creep. I already owned the 70-300 f4-5.6L IS and 300 f4L IS lenses and so thought long and hard prior to buying this but decided to go ahead for the extra reach it would provide for wildlife photography, I have absolutely no regrets. For those who complain it is large and heavy I can only say it goes with the territory if you want top quality from telephoto lenses. I have a Tamron 28-300 Di lens which is about a third of the size, weight and price of my Canon L lenses but it is only used for record shots on trips out when I want to carry just one camera and lens as the quality for fine detail and resolution does not compare. The two sample shots I have attached were both taken hand held with no support monopod and using a 1.4 mk3 extender. The swan was at ISO 800 1/500s f9 @ 390mm, the robin at ISO 6400 1/640S F10 @560mm was also shot through a double glazed window, both shots taken on 7d mk2.

Good quality ,but heavy.

Used mainly for wildlife. Beautifully sharp pictures. Disappointed that auto-focus doesn't work when 1.4 extender is attached
