A lightish easy to carry lens. Obviously not as good as the pricier larger objectived heavier lenses. Easily carried all day and produces some excellent sharp wildlife photos. Great results also had in sports photography too with pin sharp images of my local cricket team

I compared this lens to the 70-300 mm f4.5/5.6 DO IS USM, using an EOS 5D MkII. At 300 mm and max. aperture, I can't tell the difference, although the 70-300 is obviously more portable. So I tested the 100-400 at 400 mm and maximum aperture, photographing a newspaper at 7.5 metres. With a normal tripod, IS set at 1, autofocus, ISO 400 and exp. 1/100 sec, the results at both centre and edge were excellent

My first L series lens purchase and what a buy, I do a lot of bird photography and this lens is ideal, very sharp at both ends of focus and the push pull zoom is really easy to use, the only slight con is the weight, I do a lot of handheld shots and after a while you start to notice it, but I would still buy this lens again and again.

Can be used hand held at reasonable shutter speeds but best used with tripod for best depth of field.

having owned the other brands 120-400mm os i always had a niggle ......just how good is the canon 100-400mm.
So i hired one and now own one! now i will stick up for the other brands 120-400mm os because it is good but....... the canon is worth the extra if you can afford it. both superb build quality etc niggles of loss of focus etc well use the limit switch. in a word excellent, very useable the 70-200 is slightly better optics but the 400 has the reach.

A fantastic lens with an APS-C sensor camera such as the 7D, but unusable results at 400mm with the full sensor 5D mk2.

My recommendation would depend on the body to be used.

This is an excellent lens.
The stabilser works in a very 'See-able' way when in use.
It is a heavy but what can you expect from such a brilliant and rugged piece of equipment.
On the down side, the hood is a little bit difficult to attach and un-attach in the way that Canon instructs, so as to avoid permanent distortion of the hood.

I bought this lens as an upgrade from a Canon 70-300mm and use it with a Canon 60D. I took this lens to a day out at a Safari Park and was absolutely thrilled with it. The zoom takes a short while to get the hang of as it is on a slide mechanism but once you master it you will never look back. The photos produce were sharp and the autofocusing was great. Overall a magnificent lens albeit expensive but if you can afford it then go for it.
