The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens is one of the prestigious L-series of Canon lenses. The lens features Image Stabilisation, the first macro lens in Canon's EOS line up to do so, making it easy for photographers to capture amazing close-up shots without the need for a tripod. The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens is a medium telephoto macro lens and features up to 4-stop correction. Low friction ceramic balls support the moving elements and provide smooth movement, whilst the hybrid IS corrects shift movement and angular movement - a benefit of up to 2 stops at 1.0x magnification. As this lens features a Canon EF (Electro-Focus) lens mount, you can use this lens on a Canon full-frame camera (Such as the 1D X, 5D Mk III, 6D etc.) and a cropped sensor (APS-C) camera with EF-S mount (EG. 350D, 7D, 550D, 60D etc.). The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens features ultra low dispersion (UD) lenses that correct colour abberation for high resolution, high contrast images, with the addition of Super Spectra coating, which effectively reduces ghosting and flare for superior image quality. Beautiful bokeh is the setting for your subjects, which stand out perfectly as a result of the nine-blade circular aperture. The silent, high speed ring type USM Autofocus motor quickly achieves focus, whilst the three position focus limiter tailors the focus system range to the desired subject.
Sitting within the L-series of Canon lenses, the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens features dust and water resistant seals. Sitting ahead of the EF 100mm f/2.8L USM Macro, the new lens supports a full range of accessories including the Tripod Mount D, Macro Lite adapter 67, Lens Hood ET-73 and EF12 II and EF25 II extension tubes. The tripod mount can be attached to the lens without the need for an adaptor, enabling quick portrait or landscape switching without having to reframe the camera. The MR-14EX and MT-24EX speedlites can be attached using the MacroLite adaptor.

About Me Hobbyist/Enthusiast
Comments about Canon EF 100mm f2.8L Macro IS USM Lens:
This is my first L series lens and after reading all of the reviews, (and coming to terms with the cost) I decided to take the plunge and find out what all the fuss was about. WOW! The image quality is sensational. Colour and sharpness are far better than any lens I have used previously. A lot of reviews I read before buying complained about the build quality for an L series lens, I haven't owned an L series before so I can get compare, but the build quality on the lens is excellent for a plastic casing and I'm certainly not disappointed. This lens contains a 9 blade diaphragm which makes for perfect circular bokeh, simply beautiful. The auto focus is very quick and has focus limiter settings for those awesome macro shots. Using these limits removes the need to auto focus through the full focus range. Very useful as it saves valuable time (although you should really be using auto focus for these types of shots). The hybrid IS in this camera is excellent. It compensates for both vertical and horizontal shifts. Although it isn't quite as effective at 1:1, it is still very, very good. Overall, I cannot recommend this lens enough. Enjoy.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Good Macro lens

Very Good Lens for close up Photography, a little heavy but a small price to pay for good Photo's
Perfect Macro/Close up Lens
I use it for close-ups of lichen, mosses, flowers, etc. I am not at the moment into portraits, but it would be superb for that. It is fine, also, as a 'short' long focus prime lens. The IS makes it safely usable when hand-held or monopod can be used but tripod is not suitable. The relatively fast aperture (f 2.8) is good both for available light and for limiting depth of field for 'portraits' of flowers, etc.

WOW what a lens!!!!!!
What can I say about this lens, STUNNING!!!!!!The images it produces are clear, sharp and of such clarity that they are magnificent. Manual focus is easy if the auto function is struggling and with the permanent manual overide it makes it easy.

Fantastic Macro Lens
About Me Professional
Fantastic macro lens that delivers exceptional image quality with added bonus of image stabilisation. This lens also doubles as a pretty nice portrait lens. For the money you can't get better than this.
Sharp or what?
About Me Semi-Professional
Great sharpness and a nice IS implementation. The construction maybe not as robust as other L-class but it's still an amazing macro lens, also does good portraiture.
One of my Favs!
If you don't own this, buy it!! Its soooo versatile. I've used it ranging from nature/wildlife to portraits, product and sports events. The lens is fast, IS works perfectly and the weight is re-assuring heavy yet light. AF at macro and normal focal is fast without any hunting. I would never hesitate to suggest this lens to anyone. My main use for this lens is product photography - extremely crisp images great colour saturation. I LOVE this lens! :-)
Creativity in the palm of your hand

This is a remarkable piece of photographic engineering. As a Macro lens there probably isn't anything better (super sharp focus when stopped down to f5.6 and smaller) and as a general use lens it offers the scope for taking some amazingly creative images. Even getting to grips with the difficulty of focusing a short depth of field at wide open apertures has bought out a positive element to image making. I set the focus manually! It's all part of the learning process that leads to better and more rewarding photographs.Over the past year I've moved away from general telephoto lenses, to now using Canon 'L' primes. It's been an expensive process but this most recent of purchases is already proving time and again that the cost has been worthwhile. If you are looking for the best then go 'L' prime!

So sharp, wear gloves!
I use this lens primarily for macro on my 5D2. This is the field in which the lens excels. The colour rendering and detail resolution are superb. It is also excellent for table top product shots and and portraiture.Easy to handle, even for my arthritic hands, I find I use it far more often than I intended. Have no doubts about this lens, buy it!

Great quality lens
I've only just started using a DSLR and pretty much from the start I knew that Macro photography was going to be one of the things I enjoy most.I bought this lens after using a friend's none IS version because I felt that a lot of the macro work I would be doing would be handheld, and I am glad that I did. The lens is very sharp and the focus is quite fast, even on my lower end 650D camera.I would highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in macro photography. This IS version may be more expensive but I got a good price with WEX so look out for the deals that crop up from time to time if you cannot justify the full price.
