The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens is one of the prestigious L-series of Canon lenses. The lens features Image Stabilisation, the first macro lens in Canon's EOS line up to do so, making it easy for photographers to capture amazing close-up shots without the need for a tripod. The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens is a medium telephoto macro lens and features up to 4-stop correction. Low friction ceramic balls support the moving elements and provide smooth movement, whilst the hybrid IS corrects shift movement and angular movement - a benefit of up to 2 stops at 1.0x magnification. More
The L-series is Canon's flagship professional lens range, representing the best in precision-designed EF optics. L-series lenses combine superior performance with superlative handling, and are resistant to dust and moisture.
Hybrid Image Stabilizer
The new Image Stabilizer designed specifically for inclusion in a macro lens. It is able to correct lens shift movement as well as the angular movement that most IS systems can correct. This provides 2-stops of correction during 1.0x magnification, increasing to 3-stops at 0.5x magnification and 4-stops during normal shooting.
Ultra low dispersion (UD) lens element ensures high image quality
A UD element within the lens design effectively removes chromatic aberration. This allows for excellent image quality with high resolution, high contrast and excellent colour reproduction.
Focus limiter switch
To enhance the photographer’s use of the lens, it is fitted with a 3 position focus limiter switch. With limits for close up subjects, distant subjects and all subjects, the user is able to increase the autofocus speed making quick shots a possibility.
Beautiful background blur with 9 blade circular aperture
A circular blade aperture helps to create attractive, even background bokeh when isolating subjects at wide apertures.
Fast quiet autofocus
The ring USM (Ultrasonic Motor) drives extremely rapid autofocus with near-silent operation. Full time mechanical manual focus override is available without having to switch out of AF. The lens offers a minimum focusing distance of 0.3m.

I have used extension tubes for a while, and my interest in macro photography has developed over the past few months. Having decided to treat myself to a specific macro lens I read so many reviews it was starting to blur a bit round the edges. So took the plunge with an expensive lens and after only two trips out with it, I can see it will become a firm favourite. It is a well balanced lens and easy to hand hold as well as use on a tripod. Simple to use and fast focussing. Results so far are pleasing, now down to more practising!

About Me Semi-Professional
I had a 150mm Canon fit Sigma macro lens previously. I dropped it from around about 2 feet onto soft earth and it came apart. I bought the canon as a replacement as I think it looks a better build and the price was comparable with what I paid several years ago for the Sigma. Primarily used for insects and flowers in combination with a ring flash. I've not been disappointed with the results.
yes it's worth it
About Me Casual user
The problem with this lens is that you're left wishing your other lenses were as good
Great lens I have bought
I used this lens out of the box and it improved my marco photography immediately. I have only used it hand held and I am impressed by the images. The lens is well built and is of the highest standard.

A stunning lens

This is a lens that I deliberated over for a year or so before purchasing. I needed a macro lens, but not all that often, I was eventually swayed when I read a review by a Canon owner, who said that he had purchased virtually every Canon lens over the years and this was his favourite one. My advice is if you can afford it, buy it, it's a great investment and some of your best shots will arrive through this glass. The fact is that I barely use this lens for macro work, as it's amazing for portraits and allows a little space between me and my subject, which my 50mm can't achieve. The lens is lightweight, produces amazingly sharp images, creamy smooth bokeh and is also perfect for macro work (ring shot at weddings in my case). The only negative I can think of is the focusing can hunt a little on occasions, but this is mainly down to user error, as it focuses much quicker if you remember to select the focal length range on the switch located on the LHS of the lens. Out of the box you can take great shots but there is definitely a learning curve with this lens, and I now understand its capabilities and depth of field at different focal lengths, which can be wafer thin at the macro end of things.

As a Macro lens superb, as expected you have to be accurate with your focus point. Once mastered results are pin sharp. As a standard 100MM lens, fast accurate focusing again with pin sharp results as long as you remember to use the three position switch on the side of the lens marked FULL,0.5- inf,0.3m-0.5m.
