The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens is one of the prestigious L-series of Canon lenses. The lens features Image Stabilisation, the first macro lens in Canon's EOS line up to do so, making it easy for photographers to capture amazing close-up shots without the need for a tripod. The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens is a medium telephoto macro lens and features up to 4-stop correction. Low friction ceramic balls support the moving elements and provide smooth movement, whilst the hybrid IS corrects shift movement and angular movement - a benefit of up to 2 stops at 1.0x magnification. More
The L-series is Canon's flagship professional lens range, representing the best in precision-designed EF optics. L-series lenses combine superior performance with superlative handling, and are resistant to dust and moisture.
Hybrid Image Stabilizer
The new Image Stabilizer designed specifically for inclusion in a macro lens. It is able to correct lens shift movement as well as the angular movement that most IS systems can correct. This provides 2-stops of correction during 1.0x magnification, increasing to 3-stops at 0.5x magnification and 4-stops during normal shooting.
Ultra low dispersion (UD) lens element ensures high image quality
A UD element within the lens design effectively removes chromatic aberration. This allows for excellent image quality with high resolution, high contrast and excellent colour reproduction.
Focus limiter switch
To enhance the photographer’s use of the lens, it is fitted with a 3 position focus limiter switch. With limits for close up subjects, distant subjects and all subjects, the user is able to increase the autofocus speed making quick shots a possibility.
Beautiful background blur with 9 blade circular aperture
A circular blade aperture helps to create attractive, even background bokeh when isolating subjects at wide apertures.
Fast quiet autofocus
The ring USM (Ultrasonic Motor) drives extremely rapid autofocus with near-silent operation. Full time mechanical manual focus override is available without having to switch out of AF. The lens offers a minimum focusing distance of 0.3m.

I would definitely recommend this lens
Fantastic lens. Really glad I waited and didn't go for a cheaper one I knew I'd regret buying.

Bought to photograph summer flowers and insects, stunned by how versatile this lens is and how often I use it. I use it for a weekly farm walk-round, I can get everything from tiny bugs out to more open shots. It's good in low light and is great for portraits of both wildlife and people as I don't have to get in close. Picture quality is beautiful. I used it at the school nativity and it did well there too, again nice shots without being too close. I did think twice about getting this due to the cost, and probably could have managed without the IS but it's nice to know that it's there. What's not so great - well the AF hunts around a bit sometimes, but manual focus is easy and accurate. I wish all my lenses were like this.
Must have addition to your kit.

An excellent addition to any Macro photographers equipment. The non L series is good, but this one is in a league of its own. Easy to use and the ability to adjust is a bonus. As well as Macro it makes a great medium telephoto for portraits etc. used with 7D adds the bonus to apparent focal length of a cropped sensor. The IS is a further bonus to enable better use in the field where it is difficult to get a closeup handled when you cannot use a tripod or monopod.
JUST THE JOB
I can now get such wonderful sharp, colourful close ups with this lens. A real improvement on my previous 100mm f4.5 Canon macro with much better image stabilization.

Great Macro and Portrait Lens
By Wood Green Studios
About Me Semi-Professional
This is a great lens to use for close up Macro shots as well as portrait work with a really nice bookeh. Wide aperture delivers good results in low light and is relatively lightweight. A great lens to have in your kit bag if you are shooting weddings etc.
I would recommend this lens

Macro shots are clean and sharp. With the EF25 11 and EF12 11 extension tubes fitted, you get even closer shots, and the images are still clean and sharp. Also a good mid telephoto lens for general use.

produced images beyond expectation
About Me Getting started
This is my first and to date only lens, purchased after buying a second hand 450D (body only). Quite an expensive lens for a first buy but easy to use and produces superb images.Focus is fast but it will constantly "search" with the slightest movement in Macro so using the Focus range limiter is more of a must if using AutoFocus when shooting handheld.Being a "fixed 100" it is not best for a general walk around but I bought it for Macro and with the image stabilisation it has given me some superb hand held images removing the need for a tripod when you'd normally expect to need one.I am impressed and for my first DSLR it is giving me pictures I am already proud of.
