The Canon EF 100mm is a medium telephoto lens with a macro feature for 1x magnification. Fluctuations in spherical aberrations caused by focusing are suppressed, and high-quality images are obtained at all focusing distances. With eight aperture blades, good background blur is obtained even when the aperture is decreased by one or two stops. A focusing limiter which limits the magnification to 0.25x greatly assists macro photography. More
Macro with extended reach
The EF 100mm F/2.8 Macro USM is a medium telephoto lens with a macro feature providing a 1.0x magnification. With eight aperture blades, creative background blur is possible to help make the subject stand out. The lens features a focusing limiter switch which limits the focus range to improve AF speed.
Ring USM auto focus with manual override
Canon’s ring USM auto focus system employs ultrasonic frequency vibrations for fast, accurate and virtually silent operation. Full-time manual focus override, via a large ring that does not rotate during auto focus, allows photographers to fine-tune focusing instantly.
Super Spectra coating
Super Spectra coatings help ensure accurate colour balance and high contrast, and suppress flare and ghosting by absorbing light that might be reflected off internal lens elements and image sensor.

Early Days with this Lens
By Andy P
from West Midlands
Still early days for me with this lens. But so far so good. I mainly take invertebrates and fungi. So with dark winter days, its not yet being used, for the conditions i will use it in. Maybe in the spring and summer, i may give it 5 stars.

So glad I bought this.
from Kings Lynn
I considered this for a long time as it's not cheap. I nearly settled for the 60mm macro lens but online reviews suggested that this was a bit more flexible. I've used it hand held for macro work in my garden so far and am really pleased with the results. At f2.8 the depth of field is really narrow so I will have to play with settings to get good front to back focus for insects. It's seems quite quick to focus and does so quite accurately. I've used it for plants too and am really pleased with the results. I've managed to focus on subjects as close at a few cms as well as up to a metre away. I don't know if it's the best macro lens there is but I'm glad I could afford it.

A Fantastic Lens
By Pete N
I originally bought this lens about 6 years ago and for some stupid reason sold it about a year ago for almost the price I'd paid for it. What a bad decision, I didn't miss it till it was gone, but that was too late. Fortunately my wife bought me a replacement for my birthday. This lens is well made and has a quality feel, that just seems right in the hand. Both examples that I have owned have been pin sharp, and produced some excellent shots at both macro photography and as an excellent portrait lens.

Great macro lens
By Big lad
Had this lens a few days now and on my 7D it has returned some lovely results. You wont miss "IS" as I see a lot of Macro pictures and they have nearly all been taken with the camera on a Tripod. The image quality and colour spectrum are something else and I would urge anyone thinking of getting a Macro lens to try this one first. If you feel the need to pay out double the retail price for the "IS" version at least you have some idea how good it will be

I decided I wanted to have a go at Macro Photography. Having read the rave reviews of this lens I thought it was a good place to start. I didn't want to mess around with lens spacers and reversing lenses etc. I had the cash so took the plunge. Boy am I pleased I did. Being new to macro, I have a lot to learn. The attached image is of a flower less than 2" in diameter. (Best viewed full screen). Sure it's not great and I need to do some work on lighting etc. I think it does show what this lens can do, on a 550D, straight out of the box. Even when used by a beginner. I am now waiting for the cold snap to be over when the Bugs come out to play. In the mean time I find myself wondering round the house and garden looking for small objects to photograph. Such is the enthusiasm this lens has generated. If you want to get into Macro, I would highly recommend this lens.
