The Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens delivers higher image quality at the wide-angle end, enhancing optical performance, resolution and contrast. This lens is a high performance, water-resistant, and ultra wide-angle L-series lens. The optical design has been improved to offer better edge-to-edge image quality. In addition, it also features 3 high-precision aspherical lens elements, each of a different type: ground, replica and GMo. Improved AF algorithms will help the lens to focus faster and quieter. All of the "L" lenses deliver optical performance equal to similar fixed focal lengths lenses, and the USM lenses do this with silent, high-speed focusing. Distortions and aberrations are remarkably small for a lens of such amazing capabilities. More
- If I was in a different field of photography, my kit bag probably wouldn’t include any zooms, only prime lenses. But as in life, in photography we sometimes have to compromise. So if you’re going to use a zoom, it had better be good. Let’s find out if the snappily-titled Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM is any good.

L (Luxury) -series quality
The L-series is Canon's flagship professional lens range, representing the best in precision-designed EF optics. L-series lenses combine superior performance with superlative handling, and are resistant to dust and moisture.
Constant f/2.8 aperture
A fast f/2.8 maximum aperture stays constant over the full focal-length range, meaning no variation in shutter speed will occur when zooming.
A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly, and in near silence. Excellent holding torque ensures the point of focus is reached accurately, without overshooting. Furthermore, full-time manual override is available, making it possible to adjust focus without leaving AF mode.
Smooth background blur
A virtually circular aperture diaphragm gives out of focus regions a softer, more uniform feel. Sharp foreground objects stand out against a smooth blurred background.
UD and aspherical elements
The EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM incorporates three aspherical elements to ensure corner-to-corner sharpness and clarity throughout the focal range. Two UD (Ultra Low Dispersion) elements virtually eliminate chromatic aberrations.
Super Spectra coating
Super Spectra coatings ensure accurate colour balance and enhance contrast. They also reduce flare and ghosting – a common problem caused by light bouncing off a camera's sensor.
Integration with E-TTL II flash metering
Ensures optimal flash metering by passing distance information back to a compatible EOS camera's E-TTL II flash system.
The EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens comes supplied with a lens hood and soft case.

Very useful wide angle lens
About Me Professional
Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f2.8 L MKII USM Lens:
More of a specialised use than the 24-70 or 70-200 but an essential tool when pushed for space. Capable of very sharp imaging but, like all wide angles, needs care if the desired effect is to be achieved (horizontals and verticals especially).
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Excellent lens and good value
Lovely clear shots with this lens, which is great for landscapes. I used it taking some shots of Salford Quays one evening. Very accurate colours and sharp images.

Just the job
The lens I've waited for, to complement my Canon 5d Mk111. Mostly for landscape, some architecture and using HDR at times, the results are most pleasing.

I bought this lens particularly to photograph the Northern Lights in Norway earlier this year. The lens performed faultlessly in what can only be described as totally hostile conditions. The temperatures were down as low as minus 35 degrees C on some occasions and yet the lens never gave the slightest problem. My tripod froze solidly every time, taking a minimum of half an hour in warmer conditions until I could get the legs down. The lens body and camera (1DX) were both covered in a thick coating of frost more than once, but both the autofocus and manual focus worked perfectly as did the aperture ring. The weather seals did the job as the lens thawed out with no problems later. The quality of images are outstanding - no sign of sharpness dropping off at the edges, and the distortion at 16mm is well within reason and easily corrected in software. A superb lens worth every penny.

Great lens. I wanted something wider and faster and this has fit the bill perfectly. Landscape, architecture, night, long exposure etc. it just works. Today's travels called for 35mm and below, I question why I bothered bringing my others for mostly coastal landscapes. Focus out of the box was absolutely perfect. I cannot fault this lens.
