The Canon 17-40mm f4 USM is an affordable L-series ultra-wide-angle zoom lens that's ideal for both film and digital SLRs. This EF lens focuses as close as 0.28m. It has a constant f/4 maximum aperture, and offers the choice of screw-in 77mm filters or a holder in the rear of the lens for up to three gel filters. The 17-40mm f4L also features a weather-resistant construction. As this lens features a Canon EF (Electro-Focus) lens mount, you can use this lens on a Canon full-frame camera (Such as the 1D X, 5D Mk III, 6D etc.) and a cropped sensor (APS-C) camera with EF-S mount (EG. 350D, 7D, 550D, 60D etc.). More
Ultra-wide or standard zoom
The EF 17-40mm f/4L USM acts as an ultra-wide angle zoom on film or full-frame digital EOS cameras. On DSLRs equipped with APS-C sized sensors it acts as a standard zoom, giving an angle of view equivalent to a 28-70mm lens on a full-frame camera.
Minimum focusing distance is just 28cm throughout the entire zoom range.
Superior optical performance
The EF17-40mm f/4L USM has 12 lens elements arranged in nine groups. Super Spectra coating ensures excellent colour balance and minimises ghosting and flare. To provide superb image quality over the complete 17-40mm zoom range the lens uses three aspheric elements. Super UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass prevents chromatic aberrations.
A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly, and in near silence. Excellent holding torque ensures the point of focus is reached accurately, without overshooting. Furthermore, full-time manual override is available, making it possible to adjust focus without leaving AF mode.
Non-rotating front element
The front of the lens does not rotate, which makes using specialised filters, such as polarisers and graduates, easier. A drop-in gelatine-filter holder can be found at the back of the lens.
Smooth background blur
A virtually circular aperture diaphragm gives out of focus regions a softer, more uniform feel. Sharp foreground objects stand out against a smooth blurred background.
Highly resistant to moisture and dust, the EF17-40mm f/4L USM is ideally suited for use in harsh environments. Environment friendly lead-free glass is used throughout its construction.

About Me Hobbyist/Enthusiast
Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f4 L USM Lens:
Don't worry about lack if IS, you don't need it on this range of focal lengths. Focus is fast and accurate on my 7D. Lovely bit of kit.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Great lens - Good Value

Good value for landscapes on FF cameras, the F4 over the 16-35mm F2.8 doesn't matter on a tripod - half the cost

Not as good as it should be
Purchased as an upgrade to the 18-55mm kit list. I currently have three 'L' glass lenses and this is the least impressive. Good construction and design is let done by soft focussing - its not that there's anything specifically wrong, its just my other lenses are sharper! I have a 24-105 and a 10-22 between the two this doesn't really get a look in anymore.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
About Me Professional
Nice lens for those extra wide angle vistas. I bought this primarilly for out and about landscape work. I did not want the bulk of the 16-35mm. The cost is cheap allowing my money to be spent on lenses that I will use more often (I prefer telephoto vs. wide). Overall I'm really happy with it. The filter size is the same as my other L lenses (other disadvantage of 16-35mm). Only small concern is the lack of sharpness in the corners. Lightroom easily corrects distored problems using the Lens correction feature. Overall I'm really happy.

About Me Semi-Professional
This is a brilliant lens, I've used it countless time for news, night club and sports photos. It does distort quite a lot at 17mm but as long as you know how to counteract this/use to it to your advantage it's fine.

Having upgraded from crop to full frame, I had to replace my beloved EF-S 10-22mm, and, as most of my photography is outdoors, went for the 17-40mm F4 on the basis that it is significantly cheaper than the 16-35mm f2.8. I have no doubt this was the correct decision. As you would expect with a L lens it is well built. It also has the added bonus of being very light.I'm really trying to find something to say that is not great about this lens but so far have not found anything, and really i'm not expecting to. Of course if you do a lot of indoor work without good lighting, you may prefer the extra stop provided by the 16-35mm, but it will be at a significant price. I loaned both the 17-40mm and the 16-35mm before purchase and couldn't find any difference in picture quality when used at the same aperture. PS I downloaded a hyperfocal distance chart for the lens, and this is a great help in getting pin sharp foreground to far distance pics.Recommended without reservation.

Fantastic lens at a great price!
This lens is a real beauty, especially when you consider the price. The L series optics produce really sharp images at half the price of its 16-35mm sibling. Build quality is also superb. On full frame cameras (5Dii/5Diii/1D) this is a great ultra-wide angle lens for landscape and architectural photography. On cropped sensor cameras (600D/60D/7D) it converts to a very nice (27-64mm) walk-about lens. If you don't need the faster aperture or can't stretch to the price tag of the 16-35 F/2.8 L then this lens is a serious alternative.
