The Canon 17-40mm f4 USM is an affordable L-series ultra-wide-angle zoom lens that's ideal for both film and digital SLRs. This EF lens focuses as close as 0.28m. It has a constant f/4 maximum aperture, and offers the choice of screw-in 77mm filters or a holder in the rear of the lens for up to three gel filters. The 17-40mm f4L also features a weather-resistant construction. More
Ultra-wide or standard zoom
The EF 17-40mm f/4L USM acts as an ultra-wide angle zoom on film or full-frame digital EOS cameras. On DSLRs equipped with APS-C sized sensors it acts as a standard zoom, giving an angle of view equivalent to a 28-70mm lens on a full-frame camera.
Minimum focusing distance is just 28cm throughout the entire zoom range.
Superior optical performance
The EF17-40mm f/4L USM has 12 lens elements arranged in nine groups. Super Spectra coating ensures excellent colour balance and minimises ghosting and flare. To provide superb image quality over the complete 17-40mm zoom range the lens uses three aspheric elements. Super UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass prevents chromatic aberrations.
A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly, and in near silence. Excellent holding torque ensures the point of focus is reached accurately, without overshooting. Furthermore, full-time manual override is available, making it possible to adjust focus without leaving AF mode.
Non-rotating front element
The front of the lens does not rotate, which makes using specialised filters, such as polarisers and graduates, easier. A drop-in gelatine-filter holder can be found at the back of the lens.
Smooth background blur
A virtually circular aperture diaphragm gives out of focus regions a softer, more uniform feel. Sharp foreground objects stand out against a smooth blurred background.
Highly resistant to moisture and dust, the EF17-40mm f/4L USM is ideally suited for use in harsh environments. Environment friendly lead-free glass is used throughout its construction.

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f4 L USM Lens:
This is my first 'L' lens and it has been brilliant. I am upgrading all my kit (as finances allow) and this is already a firm favourite. I have found it to be incredibly useful for college prospectus photos as well as general use. The landscapes I have taken are sharp. I would say it is faultless, and look forward to many more years of photography.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

A PRETTY GOOD lens but not Not SPECIAL
By Vulcan flyer

Bought as an upgrade to replace my Canon 24-105 f4lens for my Canon5D2. The good first. Nice and light and feels better balanced than my 24-105. Very quick auto focus with good sharpness and decent colour rendition. I didn't mind losing the 70-105 range because I own a 50F1.4 and a 70-300L. However, having taken pictures with both the 24-70 and my 24-105 at F4, F8. F11, F16, and F22 at 24, 28, 35, 50 and 70mm, I found there wasn't much to choose between them. OK, the horizons on the 24-70 might have been a tad straighter and it might have been a slightly sharper at the edges but you would need to be really picky to notice.I was disappointed with the amount of vignetting at F4. Both lenses produced excellent colour, contrast and sharpness. I tested my results with some independent viewers and no-one could make a definitive choice of which lens they preferred. I must be lucky that my 24-105 is a good sample. In conclusion, the 24-70 is a very good lens but for me was not worth upgrading fro where I am. I was a bit disappointed.Wex took back the lens without question and refunded my money. I have dealt with them before and continue to find their advice and customer service utterly superb.
I would recommend this product very good lens
very good lens, i use it for landscape photography and very pleased with the results.
Canon EF 17-40mm f4 L USM Lens
About Me Semi-Professional
A great general purpose lens; 17 mm is wide enough for all my needs and 40 mm is OK for "normal view" images.

Waited a long time but it has been worth
Having bought an EOS 6D full frame camera, I decided that my future lenses would be top quality, even if I have to wait whilst savings accrue. This lens does not disappoint, great quality for landscape work especially for good foreground objects, with expanse beyond.Quite often is now my standard lens, and is a perfect partner for the 24-105mm L bought with the EOS 6D body.Glad I waited

i would recommend this product
I generally use this lens for landscape, and have used it for star trails. I use a crop frame and there is a little distortion on the wide angle, as expected, however easily corrected in editing suites. impressed as there is very little chromatic abberation.I researched this lens thoroughly and is excellent for the price range.

Another great Canon lens.
It is another Canon lens of the "L" series and as such performs perfectly and is of the highest quality and weather protection. The image quality is also second to none and befits the camera used.

This is a great lens for all thing wide-angle. It is heavy but reassuringly so, in my opinion. The focus is fast, accurate and images are sharp.

A Great lens for the money
from Southport, nw , uk
A lovely lens for the price, very fast to focus and very quiet. I use it on a 600D body so only use the centre area of the lens. I suffer no curving on the edges as full frame sensors are reputed to suffer. As you would expect for a "L" series lens, it's built like a tank with weather sealing. The only thing I miss is 3 stop stabiliser, but that would heave the price up.The photo shown was only the second shot I'd used this lens on.
