The Canon 17-40mm f4 USM is an affordable L-series ultra-wide-angle zoom lens that's ideal for both film and digital SLRs. This EF lens focuses as close as 0.28m. It has a constant f/4 maximum aperture, and offers the choice of screw-in 77mm filters or a holder in the rear of the lens for up to three gel filters. The 17-40mm f4L also features a weather-resistant construction. More
Ultra-wide or standard zoom
The EF 17-40mm f/4L USM acts as an ultra-wide angle zoom on film or full-frame digital EOS cameras. On DSLRs equipped with APS-C sized sensors it acts as a standard zoom, giving an angle of view equivalent to a 28-70mm lens on a full-frame camera.
Minimum focusing distance is just 28cm throughout the entire zoom range.
Superior optical performance
The EF17-40mm f/4L USM has 12 lens elements arranged in nine groups. Super Spectra coating ensures excellent colour balance and minimises ghosting and flare. To provide superb image quality over the complete 17-40mm zoom range the lens uses three aspheric elements. Super UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass prevents chromatic aberrations.
A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly, and in near silence. Excellent holding torque ensures the point of focus is reached accurately, without overshooting. Furthermore, full-time manual override is available, making it possible to adjust focus without leaving AF mode.
Non-rotating front element
The front of the lens does not rotate, which makes using specialised filters, such as polarisers and graduates, easier. A drop-in gelatine-filter holder can be found at the back of the lens.
Smooth background blur
A virtually circular aperture diaphragm gives out of focus regions a softer, more uniform feel. Sharp foreground objects stand out against a smooth blurred background.
Highly resistant to moisture and dust, the EF17-40mm f/4L USM is ideally suited for use in harsh environments. Environment friendly lead-free glass is used throughout its construction.

A lovely lens for the price, very fast to focus and very quiet. I use it on a 600D body so only use the centre area of the lens. I suffer no curving on the edges as full frame sensors are reputed to suffer. As you would expect for a "L" series lens, it's built like a tank with weather sealing. The only thing I miss is 3 stop stabiliser, but that would heave the price up.The photo shown was only the second shot I'd used this lens on.

I thought I should balance out the reviews here. I know of two other pro's that bought this lens to use on FF, they both sent their lens back. I have kept mine and do use it . It has good colour/contrast and good resistance to flare. Sharp it is not, especially the corners, worse is the truly dreadful distortion this lens produces not easily correctable, well actually if you were shooting architecture for a client it's not really correctable enough. Why anyone would rave about this lens is beyond me, I am yet to see a sharp one. At 32mm it's quite good, anything else don't go making big prints. This lens is the reason I am now shooting with primes mostly. Anybody I have known who has had one of these would not rate it highly for resolution. When you see the results from a sharp lens you will get a better idea on why this lens is not good enough even for a ultrawide zoom. The Sigma 12-24 although not a sharp lens is nearly distortion free.If my 17 - 40 mm fell out of my bag one day I would not regret it's demise.

About Me Professional
Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f4 L USM Lens:
Economic wide angle zoom that has the benefit of not weighing a ton like more expensive/faster models.Nice and sharp, zippy AF, can't fault it.For full frame users it's a nice wide angle zoom. For crop sensors it's more a standard zoom. A standard in my camera pack.

Perfect in any situation
For everyday landscape photography very sharp and clean. With the near focus of 0.29cm thus lense is good also for Macro. Noticeable distortion on the wide position but is normal considering it is 17mm.

This is my first 'L' lens and it has been brilliant. I am upgrading all my kit (as finances allow) and this is already a firm favourite. I have found it to be incredibly useful for college prospectus photos as well as general use. The landscapes I have taken are sharp. I would say it is faultless, and look forward to many more years of photography.
I would recommend this product very good lens
very good lens, i use it for landscape photography and very pleased with the results.

About Me Semi-Professional
A great general purpose lens; 17 mm is wide enough for all my needs and 40 mm is OK for "normal view" images.

Waited a long time but it has been worth
Having bought an EOS 6D full frame camera, I decided that my future lenses would be top quality, even if I have to wait whilst savings accrue. This lens does not disappoint, great quality for landscape work especially for good foreground objects, with expanse beyond.Quite often is now my standard lens, and is a perfect partner for the 24-105mm L bought with the EOS 6D body.Glad I waited

i would recommend this product
I generally use this lens for landscape, and have used it for star trails. I use a crop frame and there is a little distortion on the wide angle, as expected, however easily corrected in editing suites. impressed as there is very little chromatic abberation.I researched this lens thoroughly and is excellent for the price range.

Another great Canon lens.
It is another Canon lens of the "L" series and as such performs perfectly and is of the highest quality and weather protection. The image quality is also second to none and befits the camera used.
