The Canon 17-40mm f4 USM is an affordable L-series ultra-wide-angle zoom lens that's ideal for both film and digital SLRs. This EF lens focuses as close as 0.28m. It has a constant f/4 maximum aperture, and offers the choice of screw-in 77mm filters or a holder in the rear of the lens for up to three gel filters. The 17-40mm f4L also features a weather-resistant construction. As this lens features a Canon EF (Electro-Focus) lens mount, you can use this lens on a Canon full-frame camera (Such as the 1D X, 5D Mk III, 6D etc.) and a cropped sensor (APS-C) camera with EF-S mount (EG. 350D, 7D, 550D, 60D etc.). More
Ultra-wide or standard zoom
The EF 17-40mm f/4L USM acts as an ultra-wide angle zoom on film or full-frame digital EOS cameras. On DSLRs equipped with APS-C sized sensors it acts as a standard zoom, giving an angle of view equivalent to a 28-70mm lens on a full-frame camera.
Minimum focusing distance is just 28cm throughout the entire zoom range.
Superior optical performance
The EF17-40mm f/4L USM has 12 lens elements arranged in nine groups. Super Spectra coating ensures excellent colour balance and minimises ghosting and flare. To provide superb image quality over the complete 17-40mm zoom range the lens uses three aspheric elements. Super UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass prevents chromatic aberrations.
A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly, and in near silence. Excellent holding torque ensures the point of focus is reached accurately, without overshooting. Furthermore, full-time manual override is available, making it possible to adjust focus without leaving AF mode.
Non-rotating front element
The front of the lens does not rotate, which makes using specialised filters, such as polarisers and graduates, easier. A drop-in gelatine-filter holder can be found at the back of the lens.
Smooth background blur
A virtually circular aperture diaphragm gives out of focus regions a softer, more uniform feel. Sharp foreground objects stand out against a smooth blurred background.
Highly resistant to moisture and dust, the EF17-40mm f/4L USM is ideally suited for use in harsh environments. Environment friendly lead-free glass is used throughout its construction.

About Me Hobbyist/Enthusiast
Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f4 L USM Lens:
I generally use this lens for landscape, and have used it for star trails. I use a crop frame and there is a little distortion on the wide angle, as expected, however easily corrected in editing suites. impressed as there is very little chromatic abberation.I researched this lens thoroughly and is excellent for the price range.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Another great Canon lens.
It is another Canon lens of the "L" series and as such performs perfectly and is of the highest quality and weather protection. The image quality is also second to none and befits the camera used.

This is a great lens for all thing wide-angle. It is heavy but reassuringly so, in my opinion. The focus is fast, accurate and images are sharp.

About Me Semi-Professional
A lovely lens for the price, very fast to focus and very quiet. I use it on a 600D body so only use the centre area of the lens. I suffer no curving on the edges as full frame sensors are reputed to suffer. As you would expect for a "L" series lens, it's built like a tank with weather sealing. The only thing I miss is 3 stop stabiliser, but that would heave the price up.The photo shown was only the second shot I'd used this lens on.

My first L series lens. Great buy and a great lens.
Nice & wide
I have found this best for small group shots inside (wet weddings!) but be careful of the distortion at the edges.
Wonderful lens. Do all that I wanted.

I primarily bought this lens for use with my full frame camera while diving as my 24-105mm lens was too thick to fit through the housing port opening. It worked really well, although I would have loved to have just that little bit of extra reach at times to be able to photograph small stuff without having to come back another time with a macro lens. But hey, I suppose that's just an excuse for another dive! But for larger stuff it isn't really a problem as underwater you have to get close to your subjects anyway as the strobe light is only effective at very close range.I have also used the lens quite a bit for general and landscape photography, and I am really pleased with it. The photos come out really sharp right across the frame and I haven't noticed any specific issues at any aperture. In fact it is so good that I think the photos I get from this lens is better than what I get with my 24-105mm lens. As a result I frequently pick this lens as my walk around lens despite it's lack of reach compared with the 24-105mm, especially if I think that the extra width may be useful. All in all a really well made lens which do exactly what I hoped that it would do.

About Me Professional
I bought this lens to replace my Sigma 20-40 f2.8 EX HSM as I wanted something a bit wider when shooting weddings. The Sigma was soft wide-open and sharp at f4, so the f4 aperture on the 17-40 wasn't an issue for me (and I keep the 20-40 in my back-up bag in case I ever really need 2.8) On my crop bodies it's effectively a 28-65mm (almost the old standard 28-70) and when used on my 1Ds full-frame its great for shooting big venues or large groups. It's the main lens I use for weddings now, shooting about 80% of the day with it. Even though the sigma was sharp at f4 it was NOTHING compared to the sharpness of the 17-40. I used it on it's first outing the day after it arrived at a wedding and the image quality is outstanding! As for the bokeh - well, it's gorgeous! Soft, dreamy with no 'mess' that I've had with some other lenses (obviously, this is dependent on what's actually in the background). If you can live without f2.8 (and let's face it, with modern DSLRs and their high ISO capability, it's less of an issue) and want either a super-wide for your full-frame or a very sharp standard zoom for your crop body Canon, don't hesitate - buy it!
