The Canon EF 50mm f1.8 is one of the lightest EF lenses of all, weighing in at a mere 130g. It is very compact and provides high-performance for a standard lens. Colour balance is excellent and Gaussian optics provide sharp delineation from near to far focusing distances. This lens is compatible with full-frame DSLRS (EG. 1D X, 5D Mk III, 6D etc.) and cropped (APS-C) sensor DSLRs. More
Compact and high-performance, standard lens
This is the lightest EF lens in the range, weighing a mere 130g. Its Gaussian optics provide sharp images at all focusing distances as well as excellent colour balance and contrast.
Fully Electronic Lens Mount
As part of the acclaimed EF lens family, the EF 50mm f/1.8 II features a built in AF motor to provide fast, direct AF performance. The lens also includes an electromagnetic diaphragm, which ensures the right mechanical aperture position is achieved every time.
Smooth background blur
A virtually circular aperture diaphragm gives out of focus regions a softer, more uniform feel. Sharp foreground objects stand out against a smooth blurred background.
Super Spectra coating
Super Spectra coatings ensure accurate colour balance and enhance contrast. They also reduce flare and ghosting – a common problem caused by light bouncing off a camera's sensor

Can't beat the nift 50
By Dan The Man

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II Lens:
You really can't beat a good nifty 50, very versatile, great for bokeh and low light. Carry it everywhere (even if you don't have your camera, just to be on the safe side).
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

fantastic value for money

About Me Hobbyist/Enthusiast
Great value for a versatile, general purpose lens. Sharp optics with good colour rendition. The maximum aperture of f1.8 allows for beautiful background blur/ bokeh The autofocus is a little noisy compared to more expensive USM lenses and struggles in low light. The manual focus ring is tiny and awkward to use. At this price, the pros far outweigh the cons.Focusing aside, this compares favourably with my much more expensive L series zooms!

Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II lens
from Twickenham, London
I bought this lens to add to me collection for use with my Canon EOS 70D camera. I take urban landscape photos and wanted to increase my ability to do night time hand held. The lens gives a fairly flat view - so you need to focus on some distant item - but is excellent at collecting plenty of light; for being light - so helping the hand held night time photos; and providing good focus for very good quality night time shots.

Canon EF 50mm f1.8 Lens
A great fast lightweight lens with good sharp focusing that produces a nice bokeh especially useful for portraits (shallow depth of field), plus the f1.8 assists in low light photography.Excellent price and although not as sturdy as other Canon lenses, I have not found this to be an issue.
You don't yet own a 50mm prime? Buy this
About Me Semi-Professional
If you do not yet own a prime lens and want to know whether all the hype about them is true, buy this lens now.At a third of the price of the Canon f1.4 50mm prime, the value of this lens is unbeatable. f1.8 is fast enough for most uses and the lens gives great blurred backgrounds to add more impact to your shots. The only downside is less-than-lightning-fast and noisier-than-you're-used-to focusing but the best use for this lens is portraiture, so those two things have never caused a problem for me.I can honestly say that this lens is lovely to use, lightweight, small and gives amazing sharpness in the photos it helps to make. The large aperture is just an added bonus in low light.

Bargain priced lens
By Chicken Wing
A great little lightweight lens with good sharp focusing that produces a nice bokeh especially useful for portraits, plus the f1.8 helps plenty in lower light too. Unlike most other things with a hobby of photography, the price of the lens can be classed as cheap too, which is even better. The build isn't as sturdy as other Canon lenses, but why would you be throwing your lenses around anyway, so this isn't really an issue!?!

Worth they money and best quality
It is worth the money and works perfectly fine, I haven't seen any difference between this and the prime lens 50mm. Only casing and the f stops.. but still great quality for what you pay.. good for general use and have it always in my bag.

I would definitely rate this product...
from Melton Mowbray
As with previous reviews I have read, this is a lightweight lens that delivers and is great for those of us just starting in photography to get an insight into the ability of a 50mm lens.
Yes its noisy but the image quality is sufficiently good for general photography and in particular portraiture.
