The Canon EF 50mm f1.8 is one of the lightest EF lenses of all, weighing in at a mere 130g. It is very compact and provides high-performance for a standard lens. Colour balance is excellent and Gaussian optics provide sharp delineation from near to far focusing distances. As this lens features a Canon EF (Electro-Focus) lens mount, you can use this lens on a Canon full-frame camera (Such as the 1D X, 5D Mk III, 6D etc.) and a camera with a cropped (APS-C) sensor using an EF-S mount (EG. 350D, 7D, 550D, 60D etc.). Compact and high-performance, standard lens
This is the lightest EF lens in the range, weighing a mere 130g. Its Gaussian optics provide sharp images at all focusing distances as well as excellent colour balance and contrast.
Fully Electronic Lens Mount
As part of the acclaimed EF lens family, the EF 50mm f/1.8 II features a built in AF motor to provide fast, direct AF performance. The lens also includes an electromagnetic diaphragm, which ensures the right mechanical aperture position is achieved every time.
Smooth background blur
A virtually circular aperture diaphragm gives out of focus regions a softer, more uniform feel. Sharp foreground objects stand out against a smooth blurred background.
Super Spectra coating
Super Spectra coatings ensure accurate colour balance and enhance contrast. They also reduce flare and ghosting – a common problem caused by light bouncing off a camera's sensor

Quality lens for a fair price.

About Me Semi-Professional
Comments about Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II Lens:
Not the most robust build but don't let that fool you, this lens delivers quality sharp images. I used it for studio work, portrait and also photographing jewellery, so the subject wasn't too close to the lens, but the results were extremely sharp and stood up to enlargement. (For info camera used, Canon EOS 1Ds Mkiii)
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Can't fault it

This is my first venture using a prime lens on my Canon EOS 550D - it knocks the socks off the 18-55 kit lens for sharp and crisp captures when you have no option but low light. Very complimentary for portrait use and fantastic for shallow depth of field and bokeh - all effortless. Would highly recommend, particularly for the price.

It is a nifty fifty
Bought this lens to keep on my 5d as a walkabout and portrait lens. The first one I had was as sharp as a pin but had a bit of debris inside the rear element.Wex swopped it out for another and this one is fine, not quite as good as the first, but still very good.

Very surprising quality
read reviews before purchasing such as "Cheap feel/quality but great results and a must to have in your camera bag. Well it certainly is all those things... a remarkable lebs for the price, treat with care as you would with all your kit and it will reward you with some excellent results.
Obviously no zoom but if that's not what you want then this lens is perfect! Small, lightweight and has a sharp focus :)
back to basic
the first standard lens in my kit bag, first results are good but I am still learning
Very good lens, would not be without it
Am not sure why I have been surprised by the quality of images from using this lens with a 7D and 5D Mk3, but I am very pleasantly impressed. It is incredibly light after using the L series zooms
good value high performance lens

I brought this for a friends wedding shoot, it is very sharp and is good for portraits
Best lens ever at the price

This Prime lens is lightweight but this does not detract from it's operation which I cannot fault. I am busy buying better quality lenses to upgrade from the cheap and nasty and this is cheap but NOT nasty. It's only downside is the slightly soft focus at the maximum aperture and this only at the corners of the image. No image stabilisation but do I care, not with this image sharpness.
