Bought this as my first Macro lens, as I love macro photography and the lens that came with my 1000d was good, but wanted to go step further.

Must say excellent quality and sharp when close up (it is good as a GP wide angle as well)

Only prob is when in manual focus mode, it can be a bit fiddly but for me that's the only problem

I've been using this lens for about a year on an EOS450D, EOS30D and an EOS50D.

It has a really solid feel, primarily thanks to the metal mount.

This really is the ideal multipurpose prime - it's great for portraits where it returns tack sharp subjects and wonderfully soft backgrounds. It's also a great walkabout lens - providing you don't want to zoom (although this is great as it forces you to think about composition).

All the charactistics that make this a great everyday short prime transfer directly to macro work (it's designed purpose!). Granted this lens only produces a 0.5 reproduction (as opposed to 1:1 on a "true" macro) but the images are very sharp and the colours faithfully reproduced. 50mm means you have to get close - but this is not a problem for flowers or jewellry. At f/2.5 the lens is fast enough to cope quite dark subjects an also create a non distracting blurry background. The compact size of lens is ideal when you do need to get close - it means you don't intrude on the subject

On the negative side the autofocus is slow and manual ring a bit fiddly.

I'd say buy this lens if you want to try a bit of macro and also get a great general purpose prime.

the specification lives up to its claims completely
