This lens is amazing in low light situations. I have used it at weddings and have been wowed by how sharp the images are and quickly it focuses. I tried out the sigma equivalent but this is far quicker to focus and knocks spots of it.

A very nice lens, with a very quick focus! heavy to hold and camera shake will occur at 200mm in low lighting without tripod

This is by far one of the best Canon lenses I own. I use this for stills and video shooting. It's sharp all the way through the lens and the AF seems accurate. Very pleased so far. Highly recommend this lens.

I have recently upgraded to this from the sigma version and am blown away by the difference. I originally bought the sigma as I did not think I could justify having a pro quality lens for my photography, but after struggling with the sigma lens and the AF hunting at times and being quite slow I took the plunge and am pleased with the difference.The pictures are pin sharp and the AF is almost instant. I did not bother with the IS version as I usually use a higher shutter speed.Definitely the best lens I own at the moment.

Great lens. I prefer this to the IS version as its lighter, and I rarely need IS. It's pin sharp and is tough enough to last being used in all weathers / conditions. Typical L series quality - superb, knocks spots off the Nikon version in my opinion.

I do a lot of transport photography. The extra stop over the f4 makes all the difference with regard to AF. This is my workhorse lens for speeding trains etc and I intend purchasing another one.

The f4 version is fantastic for other applications but is too slow for this type of photography

I have been using this lens with my Canon 40D for well over a year now and am delighted with the results that I am able to achieve with it. I photograph mainly equine subjects such as cross country events where I need a wide zoom range, fast auto focus and at times very low F numbers. This lens represented my first foray into the 'L' series of optics and I have to say that from the moment I looked through the view finder I could see what I had paid for. The lens gives a fantastically sharp image. There is very little in the way of chromatic aberration and the results are simply a class above what I had been used to with 'standard' Canon optics. I obviously expected improved performance for the extra money but was stunned with how much better the results from this lens were. Every detail is captured beautifully and as a result I now view my 40D camera in a different light (I had considered upgrading but this lens gets such fantastic results there really is no need) The build quality is excellent with a wonderfully fluid movement on the zoom and an all metallic construction. The lens is naturally heavy but once I got used to it I barely noticed the weight and was easily able to spend a whole day tramping around fields with it. I have to confess now that I bought my lens in the US when the pound was very strong against the dollar so I feel like I got a fantastic deal - the UK price is substantially more but worth it when you consider what you are getting and the cost of similar products form other manufacturers. Having Image Stabilisation (IS) version of this lens would obviously be a bonus (but much more costly) ; however, I have to say that I donít miss it nor have I felt the need for it. I can not praise this lens enough; its zoom range suits a wide range of applications giving this lens great utility (essential for me considering how much more this level of optics can cost). In summary, a superb lens with great utility that is expensive but not over priced.

I use the Canon 70 - 200 f2.8L lens couple to either my 1Dmk3 or 40d and it works superbly well with both. The focussing is quick and accurate and the rugged build quality takes away the worry of day to day knocks. The image quality with this lens is totally first class. Opted not to get the is version as I generally shoot at quite fast shutter speeds so would not benefit from it. If you are thinking of getting this lens, buy it.
