Compact, manoeuvrable and lightweight, the Canon EF 70-200mm f4 L IS USM lens features 4-stop image stabilisation and delivers the very finest in L-series lens optics for stand out optical performance and operability. The Canon lens offers inner focusing and ring USM which produces quick and quiet autofocusing. A circular polarising filter can be attached and used easily, as the front lens element does not rotate during focusing. A tripod collar is available separately, and is the same as that used with the EF 300mm f/4L USM. As this lens features a Canon EF (Electro-Focus) lens mount, you can use this lens on a Canon full-frame camera (Such as the 1D X, 5D Mk III, 6D etc.) and a cropped sensor (APS-C) camera with EF-S mount (EG. 350D, 7D, 550D, 60D etc.). More
The EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM features the world's first 4-stop Image Stabilizer (IS). Ideal for handheld work, the exceptionally accurate and sensitive IS negates the need for a tripod in many conditions. Shutter speeds up to 4 stops slower than would be otherwise possible (e.g. 1/15 sec instead of 1/200) can be used with no perceptible increase in image blur. For stabilised panning, IS Mode 2 corrects only for unwanted vertical shake.
The lens embodies Canon’s highest standards of L-series optics, build quality, reliability and operability. Crisp, high contrast image quality is assured right across the frame and throughout the entire zoom range. A reliable partner in tough conditions, the metal and polycarbonate construction features special environmental seals to prevent the ingress of dust and moisture.
With a length of just 172mm and weighing only 760g, the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM is ideal for assignments where there is a need to travel light without compromising performance, operability or image quality.
With no change in aperture over the full focal length range, photographers can set exposure at the widest aperture and zoom through to 200mm without slowing shutter speed. Lens length remains constant during zooming and focusing.
Fluorite and UD lens elements
The lens incorporates a single Fluorite and two UD (ultra-low dispersion glass) lens elements to suppress secondary chromatic aberrations. The result is crisp, high contrast, undistorted images throughout the entire zoom range, without colour fringing at subject outlines.
A Ring-type USM (Ultrasonic motor) delivers responsive, high-speed, silent auto focus. Holding torque is excellent, stopping the focus lens group with precision and without overshoot. Full time manual focus override is available without switching out of AF. Minimum focus distance is 1.2m throughout the zoom range.
Super Spectra coatings
Optimised Super Spectra coatings and lens element shaping suppress flare and ghosting. Coatings also help achieve true colour balance and increase contrast.
Pleasing background blur
The Electro Magnetic Diaphragm (EMD) features an almost perfectly circular aperture to create an even and attractive blur from out-of-focus backgrounds.
A cylindrical bayonet hood and soft case are included.

I finally took the plunge
from Mid Wales
I am a Canon fan and in the main always use their excelent equipment. But when it comes to lenses I have found that some of the after market devices take some beating at their offered price. After a serious attack of blood rushing to my head I decided to buy the 70 x 200mm L series F4 IS USM lens. I did not need the extra stop for dim lighting so no need to buy the F2.8 version.I have not had it long but I can overwhelmingly confirm that it is worth every penny that it cost me. The speed and accuracy of the Auto focus has to be seen to be believed. This coupled to the remarkably quick Image Stabilisation makes it a dream come true to work with. One thing that does not over bother me is noise in use but if this is a concern you simply cannot hear it in operation.I have used it for action (sports) work. wild life and scenic views and it is outstanding in all areas. The proffesional reviewers, in the main, rate this lens above the F2.8 version providing you don't need the extra stop. All I know for sure is that it costs considerably less and does the job I want to perfection.
Great results in all kinds of lighting...

About Me Professional
Love this lens...Not had it long but its hard to fault it...Smoothe fast focus and the constant f4 aperature while not blindingly fast its far from slow..Used it for shooting portfolios, fashion shoots and a wedding last week and it performed beautifully on all ocasions...Unless you really must have the f2.8 version I think for the money this lens is far better value.
A good all rounder
from Channel Islands
I have wanted this lens for a long time as I needed a good all round travel lens that would suit various situations and I have not been disappointed.
If you've thought about buying this lens you will have looked at the reviews. I found it difficult to find any with negatives and so spent the money - The reviews were correct and I'm not disappointed. Simply stunning quality and so glad I opted for the IS version as this gives great results handheld. If your looking at the non IS version you will need the tripod mounting ring which is expensive and takes your expenditure closer to the IS version - I'm still saving for the tripod mounting ring though.

I used the lens for the first times this weekend at a polo match. Excellent quick focus. Bright sharp photos with lovely background blur. This lens will be a constant companion at all shoots whether sports, weddings or theatrical events. The only downside is the poor quality case that comes with the lens. It is only really a pouch.

A quality lens at a reasonable price
By Bluey the elder
I really did fancy the 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Mk2 but could not justify the expense for a hobby. I am very pleased with the 70-200mm F4 IS USM. It is not too heavy and the clarity and sharpness of images is brilliant even when zooming and cropping subjects.I have not noticed any lens distortion, unlike my Sigma 18-200mm which suffers from pin cushion distortion at 200mm. I have found no problems with this lens and I can even get it into my camera bag whilst still attached to my 450D! It's a shame Canon do not include a tripod bracket with this lens, but that said, the IS does a good job.
