The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM is a versatile telephoto lens setting new standards in zoom and performance. It features a 4 stop Image Stabilizer for greater flexibility when shooting and has two UD elements and floating lens group for excellent sharpness and imaging performance. This durable and rugged lens construction meets the needs of demanding photographers. As this lens features a Canon EF (Electro-Focus) lens mount, you can use this lens on a Canon full-frame camera (Such as the 1D X, 5D Mk III, 6D etc.) and a cropped sensor (APS-C) camera with EF-S mount (EG. 350D, 7D, 550D, 60D etc.). High performance telephoto zoom lens
With a focal length range of 70-300mm, the EF 70-300mm f4-5.6L IS USM is a compact and versatile telephoto zoom lens delivering exceptional image quality. Ideal for wildlife and sports photographers, as well as photo journalism and portraiture.
The L-series is Canon's flagship professional lens range, representing the best in precision-designed EF optics. L-series lenses combine superior performance with superlative handling, and are highly resistant to dust and moisture.
4-stop Image Stabilizer
A 4-stop optical Image Stabilizer – specially designed for the lens’ specific focal length range – works to counteract image blur, which can occur during handheld shooting, or at slow shutter speeds. Automatic panning detection ensures effective performance when tracking moving subjects and, as the IS system is based in the lens, results are visible through the viewfinder during framing.
Two UD elements
Chromatic aberration is virtually eliminated by the inclusion of two UD lenses, ensuring optimum image quality and sharpness.
Creative background blur
An 8 blade circular aperture on the EF 70-300mm f4-5.6L IS USM creates beautiful background blur, making your subject stand out with dramatic effect.
Fast, quiet auto focus
A ring USM (Ultrasonic motor) uses ultrasonic frequency vibrations to drive extremely rapid auto focus with near-silent operation. A high-speed CPU and optimised AF algorithms contribute further to AF speed. Good holding torque stops the focusing lens group without overshoot. Full time electronic manual focus override is available without having to switch out of AF mode.

About Me Getting started, Hobbyist/Enthusiast
Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 L IS USM Lens:
We travelled around Peru so I wanted to keep weight to a minimum. 70-300mm gave that extra reach. Portraits shot whilst travelling at speed in mini buses were a breeze. This lens was so quick and precise, awesome detail. Taking wildlife shoots the background was lost and birds in flight were stopped dead sharp. If this lens was compatible with the Canon Extenders it would be perfect...
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Brilliant - use it for pictures of horses jumping. V fast, crisp even at 300mm
A fantastic lens that covers a wide zoom range. The picture quality is excellent. The lens is built like a tank meaning it is on the heavy side. Would definitely recommend!

My choice was between 70-300 f4-5.6 L and the 100-400 L, but the 100-400 is a much larger and slightly heaver lens and i wanted to be able to use it hand held . Although the 70-300 is not much lighter just 300g for me it made all the difference, it is also much more compact. The image quality is excellent, i have been really pleased with the quality of the images. A great investment that i am sure i will use for many years to come !

Absolutely superb lens
from Milton Keynes and Sri Lanka
I decided to upgrade from my Canon 70-300 IS to the newer 70-300 L IS after discussing it with advisors at WEX and a friend who is a pro photographer. They were right... it is the fastest, sharpest lens I have ever used.Bird photography is never easy, and the thought of hand-holding anything at 400 or above is out of the question in the back of a jeep on bumpy tracks.Yes it is a bit heavy, but not too bad, and it is no longer than my old 70-300 if a lot chunkier which makes holding it more positive I thought. Back home now from Sri Lanka, and looking at the results on the computer, I now know I made the right decision... IT IS SUPERB !

You get what you pay for
By Phil from Preston
I haven't used this much since I took delivery of it, but it was a no brainer to upgrade my standard 75-300 IS lens after I bought the 100mm f2.8 L series macro lens and saw the difference a quality lens made. First impressions are very good. Heavy, but I expected that, after all it is a quality lens. Well built, fast quiet focus and tremendous shots. I was torn between this and the 100-400 L series as I wanted some extra reach for wildlife, but to be honest I was put off by the issue of dust with the 100-400, so I decided to buy this one. The downside is that it is not compatible with the Canon extender. For this price Canon should ensure that all their L series will work with the extenders, but I am told that the Kenko Pr0 300 1.4 works with this lens. I am glad I bought this one!

I needed a longer lens than my 70-200 f4L, but don't always want to take my 100-400L. The 70-300L is almost the same size as the 70-200, and actually has better picture quality than my 70-200L (maybe my copy of that lens is not so good). Fast focus, excellent IS, good for all uses. Now wondering if I should sell the 70-200 AND the 100-400! Really is that good!

Definitely has the
I was torn between this 70-300 f4-5.6 L and the similarly-priced 100-400 L. Ideally I'd have liked the capability to go to 400mm, but the 100-400 is a much larger lens, and I knew that this would tend to make me disinclined to carry it on a day out. The 70-300, although not a lot lighter, is much more compact and carrying it really isn't much of a hassle. In addition, it has the normal twist-zoom action rather than the "trombone effect" of the 100-400: I wasn't too sure whether I'd like the latter! Added to all of which, the 70-300 L is one of Canon's most recent releases, and in terms of the IS and focusing speed, this really shows. The image quality is absolutely stunning: sharp as knives, beautiful colour rendition and contrast, and the lens has really fast, dead accurate focusing. The 4-stop IS is superb. No problems hand-holding this lens in the great majority of photographic situations. I knew this lens would be good, but I wasn't prepared for quite how good it actually is. it's a lot of money, but to my mind this lens is really worth it. It has hardly been off my camera since I bought it several weeks ago. An absolute joy to use.

I bought this lens along with a Canon 7D , 17-40 ef-L lens and battery grip. This zoom lens is a top quality lens producing stunning results for me.It is a big lens, but I like that as it cradles nicely in the hand if using without support.Build quality is exceptionally good.

About Me Professional
If you cover outdoor events and needed a compact fast focusing quality telephoto zoom lens with great image quality then this is the one. It would have been perfect if it was a constant aperture across the zoom range but use Aperture Priority mode on the camera and live with it.Used at two recent MotoX events and it handled the dust, rain and mud without a problem. MotoX really tests the focus tracking and focus speed and this lens kept up with everything thrown at it.I have noted weight as a con but this is being a bit pedantic. It feels a fair bit heavier than a 70-200 F4 L but it also feels lighter than a 70-200 f2.8 L on the camera body. I have used it all day hand held on a 1DIII body.Image colours and sharpness are up there with the best of the Canon lenses. Firm but not tight zoom and smooth focus ring. Image stabilistion just works and delivers the 4 stops advertised.Strongly recommended for day time sports event shooters.
