The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM is a versatile telephoto lens setting new standards in zoom and performance. It features a 4 stop Image Stabilizer for greater flexibility when shooting and has two UD elements and floating lens group for excellent sharpness and imaging performance. This durable and rugged lens construction meets the needs of demanding photographers. More
High performance telephoto zoom lens
With a focal length range of 70-300mm, the EF 70-300mm f4-5.6L IS USM is a compact and versatile telephoto zoom lens delivering exceptional image quality. Ideal for wildlife and sports photographers, as well as photo journalism and portraiture.
The L-series is Canon's flagship professional lens range, representing the best in precision-designed EF optics. L-series lenses combine superior performance with superlative handling, and are highly resistant to dust and moisture.
4-stop Image Stabilizer
A 4-stop optical Image Stabilizer – specially designed for the lens’ specific focal length range – works to counteract image blur, which can occur during handheld shooting, or at slow shutter speeds. Automatic panning detection ensures effective performance when tracking moving subjects and, as the IS system is based in the lens, results are visible through the viewfinder during framing.
Two UD elements
Chromatic aberration is virtually eliminated by the inclusion of two UD lenses, ensuring optimum image quality and sharpness.
Creative background blur
An 8 blade circular aperture on the EF 70-300mm f4-5.6L IS USM creates beautiful background blur, making your subject stand out with dramatic effect.
Fast, quiet auto focus
A ring USM (Ultrasonic motor) uses ultrasonic frequency vibrations to drive extremely rapid auto focus with near-silent operation. A high-speed CPU and optimised AF algorithms contribute further to AF speed. Good holding torque stops the focusing lens group without overshoot. Full time electronic manual focus override is available without having to switch out of AF mode.

Brilliant Lens for the price.
Very nice build quality also bought a Kenko 67mm Pro1 Digital UV Filter to protect front lens.Lens hood a little stiff but I guess will get better with use. Remember to attach and remove by the mounting end as the outer end flexes and could be damaged.Used hand held at a falconry display for about 1 hour without any discomfort from the weight.Did consider the 100-400 but after reading reviews decided on the 70-300 which I think is more usable for my needs. Also a new 100-400 without the push-pull zoom has now been released at a much higher cost.

Great little Lens
from Swansea Wales
I bought this after struggling to carry the Heavier Sigma 150 - 500 mm lens I had and now cope with this on a monopod for a considerable timeI found that I can crop to a greater degree than at the 500mm end of my old lens giving a reasonable size image because of the image qualityyes you have to get closer to your subject but I found that to a certain degree with my old lens anyway,I use a Lightweight hide to help hereThe stabilisation and the close focus is very good for getting handheld shots of Butterflies and insects - recently had some very good shots of Dragonflies at a distance of 10 to 15 feet away also used this for Birds and had some of the of best results for small birds that I have ever had(i.e. Goldcrest) Quality and sharpness of the images is superb and is only marginally reduced using a Kenro 1.4X convertor
I Would recommend this product

Used for wildlife and sport, great picture quality, shame it doesn't have a tripod bracket

I have used canon lenses for many years, I am very pleased with the quality of this lens. My main use is for wildlife photography, the results so far have been wonderful. The size of this lens itself is really good and not bulky. The ease of use is great.Overall I would recommend this lens. I have not yet found any fault with the lens itself. The only disappointment is Canon not supplying a tripod mount which is an extra cost to be paid out.
Brilliant lens for sports
Takes fabulous sports pictures - I shoot horses (sic) jumping, so often at a distance and rapidly changing focus. Not too heavy for what it is. No need for a tripod, the IS is so good!
GREAT PRODUCT DOES EXACTLY WHAT IT IS ME
This is the best lens I have ever purchased it has great quality, why did i wait so long?

About Me Professional
I use this primarily for weddings but also for travel and wildlife. The image quality this lens achieves is outstanding which was my main priority. All the way through the focal length range and at every aperture. The Image Stabilzer is very good and I can hold at 1/60th second with no problem at all. With care I can go down to 1/30th of a second. The lens is quite heavy which isn't a problem in itself at is very ergonomic, but when being used for extended periods (eg: when shooting a wedding ceremony or speeches) it can get tiring. A monopod is a good option to overcome this. I would have preferred the zoom and focus rings to be the other way around. The zoom ring is at the front and the focus ring is behind it, on my other Canon lens it is the other way round so takes a bit getting used to. The build quality is superb. I've used the lens in all weathers including pouring rain with no ill effects at all. Being an L-series this lens is expensive but then you get what you pay for.
