Comments about Canon EF 85mm f1.8 USM Lens:

I use this lens mainly for portraits and street photography (i.e. documentary and travel). The focal length gives you a really nice tight composition and stops you having to be too intrusive on the subject. However, it may have limited uses, you need plenty of space to get the best composition. The aperture capabilities (F1.8) is surprisingly high quality! I found it really beneficial when needing that extra bit of light, the quality of background blur is also very strong. A major weak point of this lens is the build quality, I personally feel it has very weak casing. This lens seems to be the best 85mm prime lens for your money, I highly doubt the L version is worth the extra grand.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f1.8 USM Lens:

I brought this lens for portrait photography for an upcoming wedding I have been invited to photograph and wanted to ensure I got some practise in before the event.

I have now used the lens on a couple of different occasions and I am over-joyed with the purchase and it is certainly producing good results.

Would certainly recommend the lens to anybody who is going to be doing a lot of portrait work.

The lens has also worked very well for me in low light environments. I was very pleased with the performance in low light while photographing a local band performing and ended up with taking capturing what I consider some of my best photos.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f1.8 USM Lens:

For a portrait lens that blurs out the background you wont find better unless you pay an arm and leg for an "L" lens. It beats zooms hands down, and for lower light use the extra stops available compared to zooms is invaluable! It's also very light, and easily added to a gajdet bag. A slight minor point is it CAN be hard to obtain autofocus, but the cure is to use the centre point only, this only applies if the subject is being focused at full aperture and does not fill a lot of the viewfinder. Also the depth of field close up is VERY small, use manual focus, this is not a fault with the lens though! Well worth the money!

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f1.8 USM Lens:

I have always liked a 135mm on film cameras, this 85mm gives me 136mm equivalent on my Canon 40D. This is an impressive lens which focuses in a blink and is bright and very sharp indeed. It throws backgrounds out of focus beautifully too. [...]

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f1.8 USM Lens:

The perfect lens for portraits and general use. It's compact and lightweight, but without compromising build quality. The optics are what you would expect from Canon, delivering crisp, sharp images even at its full 1.8. apperature It has full frame coverage too, so no worries there.
This is a discrete, understated lens, which I think adds to its appeal.
Any downside is the lens HOOD,(bought separately) yes, agreed, a bit fiddly as the other reviewers have said, but a minor point on an otherwise excellent product.
