£60 Cashback. With its effective focal length range of approximately 16-35mm in 35mm format, the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM is a remarkable lens with outstanding image quality that will take your photography into new dimensions and areas of dramatic expression. This lens allows you to get extremely close to subjects, exaggerating the difference in size between a near object and its background. Creative photographers can use this phenomenon to create excellent separation between subject and background for a strong sense of presence, or for a pan-focus effect with everything from foreground to background sharply in focus. Designed specifically for digital photography, the lens has specially shaped lens elements and Super Spectra coatings to suppress ghosting and flare, which can be caused by reflections off digital camera sensors. An exclusive optional lens hood can further reduce the incidence of flare.   More

Comments about Canon EF-S 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 USM Lens:

I've had the lens for few months now and have used it at several weddings, for interior commercial work as well as for my own shots.

I'd say it's not a general use lens. For all it's nice and wide (use it in portrait and you'll get your own feet in the shot) it's NOT as sharp as L glass and has it's drawbacks.

        The Good.....

Really wide. Currently the widest lens Canon make so if you have to have the widest thing going this is it. There have been times where this lens has got me shots I couldn't get with anything else. If I have to make a choice between getting an OK shot or not getting a shot at all I'm going to take OK every time.

Style. Because it's so wide you'll get converging verticals. These will be most pronounced when the lens is at it's widest and there are straight lines near the edge of the frame. This gives a very distinctive look and feel to a shot, which can be good thing. There again it can be very bad.
You need to pick your shots carefully.

        The Bad....

Sharpness. Or should that be the lack of it. I've taken identical shots with this and a 17-40 L and there is an obvious difference. I use Lightroom and I can tell which shots came from which lens without having to use the 100% function. Having said that it's an OK performer.

Speed. Maybe it's just me but I thought this would be a 2.8. It has a 77mm filter like the big boys but needs a bit more light. I find this restricts my use of the lens.

Things it does well it does really well but but you'll probably have to play with this for a while to get used to it. I'd recommend this lens but I'd make sure they'd had their hands on one before buying.

Comments about Canon EF-S 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 USM Lens:

Fantastic lens, but it needs loads of light to do its best, Onboard flash is too directional, too centred and it hits the top of the lens when too close up. Outside or in a studio location it would be perfect for big group shots ike a band but not for family shots where detail is the key. But i love it, looks crazy with the lens hood on, it looks massive! high recomendation but dont expect `L` series resuts, expect 90% perfect quality.

Comments about Canon EF-S 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 USM Lens:

An amazing lens that can give some really sharp pictures. I tried most of the wide angle lenses available before buying the Canon and it was the sharpest and best contrast of the lot.

Shame it isnt an L series lens with the bonus of the hood, case and warrenty that they come with. The quailty means it should be and the price is close to the L range.

Taking photos at 10mm takes a little thinking about if you are used to normal range lenses, Everything seems so far away, and if you dont get teh camera orientated right then you will have a distored horizon. However, that is soon learnt and all of my best landscape shots have been taken with this lens. everyone I have let try it has ended up buying one for themselves.

Comments about Canon EF-S 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 USM Lens:

This has to be the best super-wide lens I've used with a short back (smaller than full frame) camera. The images it produces are bright with excellent contrast, and tack sharp under most circumstances. Sharpness drops off in the corners and at wide apertures but is still better than more pricey lenses.

The price of this lens seems to be rising and rising, no doubt because of the consistently good reports it gets, suppliers can demand more for it. At the older lower prices I'd have given this lens 5 stars for everything.

The 77mm filter thread means its probably the same as the other pro or L lenses you have - you can use the same filters.

Canon don't supply a lens hood or soft case, but non-Canon equivalents can be bought for a few pounds from third party suppliers.

Comments about Canon EF-S 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 USM Lens:

This lens is designed to only fit Canon's 1.6x crop cameras such as the 40D or 450D. It is not suitable for Canon's full frame or 1 series bodies. The 10-22mm focal length equates to 16-35mm on a full frame camera and is the only lens made by Canon for such a wide angle view on a crop body.

The lens seems pretty well built and nicely balanced. The zoom ring is positioned towards the front of the lens with the focus ring nearer to the camera. I often pair this lens with a 24-105 L as a reasonable weight walkaround outfit. Annoyingly, on the 'professional' L range zooms Canon have the zoom and focus rings positioned the other way round and at first this can be frustrating. Canon do at least keep the set up the same within each of their three distinct price ranges - budget, mid-range and professional. A lens hood will cost you extra. This is common practice with Canon (except for their L range) but I still find it annoying.

Image quality is very good indeed. Some say this lens is equal to 'L' quality and I tend to agree in respect to the actual performance. The L lenses are better built but the 10-22 certainly delivers the goods. The maximum aperture could be better but is fine for most applications. A lens with such a wide perspective does require careful use but the results can be stunning.

                    Recommended? Certainly.

Comments about Canon EF-S 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 USM Lens:

Quality of construction is in keeping with others in the same pedigree. Buy the lens hood as a seperate item (a bit of a pain...) but gives one the feeling of 'protection' of the front element. Quality of results very good and on a par and better than other brands I have tried. You know you're using a margue lens. There of course is a degree of slight distortion at the edges, easily corrected in cropping the image slightly or in the first instance composing the horizontals and verticals correctly so as to minimise distortion. The increased area of coverage is invaluable with this lens and well worth the money spent (which isn't a lot really!). Invaluable for interiors. Auto focusing is good.
