February 2011 - This morning (7th Feb) Canon have announced the introduction of TWO new digital SLR cameras into their EOS line-up. I was invited to Canon UK’s HQ in Woodhatch to see what the new models would be and, more importantly, have a little play with them. Read our EOS 600D and EOS 1100D Preview...

EOS - Stands for Electro Optical System.
SLR - Stands for Single Lens Reflex: Means the camera has one lens that is used for both composing the frame and capturing the image to memory.
APS-C - A type of digital camera sensor with an integral x1.6 magnification factor. This means that for all lenses (Canon, Sigma & Tamron) you have to x the focal length of your lens by the crop factor, which is 1.6 (Nikon 1.5). For example - Canon 50mm x 1.6 = 80mm. For a camera with a cropped sensor the field of view you actually get is 80mm.
CMOS - Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor – A type of image sensor used in many digital cameras.

About Me Professional
I bought the 1100D as a light weight back up body to my 7D. Although not quite used to using buttons instead of a wheel yet the menu is similar to any other canon DSLR. I've bought this as a back up but feel its going to get more use such as when I travel as its smaller and light weight, and when I'm not workIng to give my 7D a break.

About Me Casual user
I previously owned a 1000D that I had been really happy with but really wanted to be able to capture video too. I decided to upgrade to the 1100D and was really glad I did. I was already familiar with the controls, having a Canon before, so it wasn't long until I was up to speed. The results this camera give are fantastic, considering the price. It also features a higher ISO setting than my previous body and this has enabled me to use this camera indoors without a flash - where perviously I've had to.I've been impressed with the video function, being able to shoot in 720p. It is sometimes a little difficult to see the live view screen when shooting video outdoors and I do sometimes wish it had a mic input socket - but other than that the camera is great! If you are looking to enter the world of DSLR's, this is a great starting point!

Great Quality Entry Level Camera
By Maddy the Dutchie
About Me Back up camera, Casual user, Getting started, Hobbyist/Enthusiast
We bought the 1100d as a backup for our 500d , but in the last week we have used it more than the 500d , for a entry level product it is perfect , good quality for price ,easy to use nearly the same as more expensive 500d .We have nothing negative to say about the camera .
Quite remarkable value
Bought this as an image capture device for a fluorescent microscopy application - provides superb image quality at an amazing price, and eveything can be controlled from a laptop.

Excellent product, very adequate !

Some reviews I have read seem a little harsh on the 1100d. The body and grip area is not as 'plasticky' as they make out, its quite lite and is a perfect choice for a first dslr. (Offering more flexibility and costing about the same as a G12). I already have the eos 40d and 5d mk 11 so why buy the 1100d entry model dslr ? The main reason was to take a bit of pressure off the 40d, at the moment its taking on average 700 images per week doing web site photography, plus some event photography increases that even more. I had no need for all the bells and whistles on a back up body so went for the least expensive option. We know the pedigree of the 40d and the 5d mk11 that goes without saying, well Ive used the 1100d as a working camera for two weeks now and I have to say it gives the 40d a run for its money. The controls are easy to access the screen displays all the settings clearly and its more than adequate for the job its used for, picture quality is excellent. For the money they are available at dont think twice treat yourself there will be no regrets it will start you on a fantastic journey.
