Canon ET 83C for EF100-400mm f4.5-5.6L USM IS Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact. Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Comments about Canon ET 83C Lens Hood for EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L:
This is an indispensible accessory for eliminating flare. My last one lasted 15years before it split. It does seem very expensive for a bit of plastic, but having forked out for the lens it would be a false economy not to buy it.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
