If you've splashed out on the 17-55mm lens, I'd recommend getting this hood. Because it does both of things that a lens hood should - it cuts down on glare in your shots, and it protects the front optic of your lens. And, given the vast fingerprint-attracting 77mm front glass of the 17-55mm, that's a valuable thing to do.
It's a better quality hood than some, lined with a light-absorbent black velvet style finish rather than the simple ridged plastic surface of some, and it soaks up reflections and glare very well. Being designed for the specific lens, there's no vignetting.
The only downside is the size - fitting on the already wide lens, this makes the lens even wider, and may make it hard to fit into some camera bags.

I bought this because for use on a Canon 17-40mm L series lens. The feedback from other photography sites was that this was a better hood for the lens than the one that comes as standard with the lens when using the lens on a crop sensor camera. As I use the lens on a Canon 7D this is a better choice of hood. Price isn't great, but don't blame Warehouse Express - Canon don't exactly price any of their hoods particularly well. Overall I'm glad I bought it.
