Brilliant but thirsty
About Me Frequent User
Comments about Canon Pixma Pro 1 Inkjet Printer:
Received my Pro1 from wex exactly a month ago and I'm back to buy Ink. That's a bit worrying but here's what is good about the printer first. It's great to look at, solid build, nothing feels like it's about to fall off. It's almost silent when printing with no violent or worrying noises - just nice and smooth printing at an acceptable speed, erring towards slow (I'm ok with that). I have printouts mounted from the R2880, R3000 and the 3800. I've printed the same images and the Pro1 (in my opinion) is as good as if not better with every print I've done. The colours look stronger, deeper and the details slightly sharper. Printing from the MAC with photoshop managing colours from a calibrated NEC PA241 using Permajet profiles for the exact paper matching the Pro1. FB Distinction and Fibre Royal and every printout is brilliant - Oyster good too. Back to the worrying part ... I'm only about 40/50 prints in and I'm needing ink already. The images are dark and I'm printing best quality and I'm also assuming that lots of tubes etc needed topping up before I got started but the ink is disappearing fast. All are down just past half way and the Chroma Optimiser, Dark Grey and Photo Black are near empty. I know there are stories afoot of initial cartridges not been totally full but it appears to be one thirsty beast. Time will tell. If, like me, you are seeking quality prints then I would recommend this printer. If you are on a budget, then maybe not.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

It took 90 minutes to unpack and set-up, but it is soooo worth it! I wanted an A3 printer to print professional images to sell and this is the best I could find. Printing straight from RAW images is fantastic, but re-processed images are outstanding. At 27 kg, make sure you have somewhere substantial to place it on, so that it does not move when it is printing. You have to use Canon ink, which is not cheap, but you get what you pay for, especially for professional quality.

Canon Pixma Pro-1
By CAP Coops
Initially bought the printer based on other reviews and thought would be a good purchase, until came to use it, took a lot of ink, paper and eventually the purchase of colormunki photo to get prints which were as seen on the monitor (using calibrated Dell Ultrasharp), was printing too dark about 2-3 exposures too dark. Now I have managed to calibrate the monitor to the printer using the colormunki photo this is now a great product, although heavy on the chroma optimiser, would recommend to switch this off and use only for long lasting display photos. As this is my first experience of using a high end printer my experiences may be down to un-experienced user rather than a mis-placed expectation of the printer to print staight out of the box as my £70 epson did and still does. That said I am now producing prints that exceeded my expectations and would recommend this product to others if they are aware / know about calibration and have the equipment to do it.
Fantastic. Get Canon paper though
I use the printer sparingly currently as I'm a design graduate just using it for the odd freelance project where I need excellent print quality - plus financially I can't stock up on the ink and paper. I plan on using it more frequently (small business level) soon though. I struggled initially getting the colour output right and thought of forking out for a colour calibration kit. DONT! As soon as I invested in some high quality Canon paper I could then choose the correlating colour profile in print settings and the printer then knew exactly how much ink to chuck at it. No more dark, dingey images and graphics and the ink is lasting better. Also keep in mind the cost of the cartridges if you're just starting out. Despite the truly astounding, economic droplet system in place here, they are around £25 a pop. I'm just about to replace the 2nd cartridge with the other 10 looking as if they're going to run out at the same time. The first to go was Matte Black, the Chroma Optimizer is now getting very low.Print time is great considering the quality that results. Put it this way it's not going to shoot out, so will be around a few minutes for an A3 poster with a solid background. You won't regret the initial investment cost of this printer, I'm confident it will grow with my professional development for years to come.

simply the best

this pro-1 printer in the last month has been immaculate, took a couple of hours to get going but it has quite quickly got better and better. I had a 9000 mk l and still have my 9000mk2 which was very good but this pro-1 is the best by far.

It is worth noting that the dimensions listed by Canon are for the fully closed up printer, you need to add extra space behind and in front for the media. Canon recommend 10 Inches behind, but don't specify in front, I measure about 10 inches for the tray. I found using a trolley on wheels minimises the impact in the room.Setup is slow, due to head alignment and ink pumping, but you only need to do that once, so it's not a big issue, and you can be installing the drivers while you wait.I've had very good results when used in conjuction with a Colormunki Photo for calibrating the monitor and printer, although the prints were still a pretty good match to screen without performing calibration, and the tonal range is fantastic.I've not used it yet but there is an option to apply a second image to the gloss printing part of the process so you could apply shiney text to a matt print for greetings cards, as an example. It is pricey but you are getting prints at a quality worthy of sale when used with good quality print media.

A vast improvement over the Pro 9500
About Me Professional
I purchased the Pro 1 to replace my Pro 9500 Mk2 (which proved to be very costly in terms of ink consumption). The larger 36ml cartridges go a long way and are proving to be economical from a commercial perspective (I am a semi-retired Wedding Photographer), but this printer is even bigger and heavier than the Pro 9500 so you will need a large professional office desk or separate printer stand if you are using a twin monitor set-up.The print results are superb and far better than my old Pro 9500 Mk2 in B&W, but I have yet to absolutely perfect screen to print matching with my Dell 30" monitors set to Adobe RGB. The drivers and utilities meet the usual high standards set by Canon over the past decade and work well in XP and Vista 64 (I have yet to try Windows 7). I am surprised to read that some owners have had difficulties setting-up this model as it is no more complicated than the other 'Professional' standard printers/plotters I have used over the years, but I expect the sheer number of options and 'tweaks' available within the software may overwhelm some novice PC users – just take your time and do the research before straying from the defaults!
Quality in all ways

I create art on my PC, usually using photoshop sometimes with manipulated photo's and this printer is the best for hardcopy. A bit big - even bigger than I thought, so finding a home for it is tuff, although it does plug in through ethernet so it only needs to be close enough to grab the wonderful finshed work from it.

Outstanding quality, with a little work
This is my first A3+ printer and I'm really impressed with it. I've used high quality A4 printers from Canon and HP but the Pixma Pro-1 is in a completely different league. With a bit of care the print quality is simply outstanding. Scaling up to A3+ at such high quality is really showing up the flaws in my photography! Colours are smooth, deep and consistent, and I've not yet had any need to create custom profiles. The extra black inks make all the difference in monochrome prints, with smooth greys and minimal metameric shift.Out-of-the-box my first few prints were on the dark side, but it took very little tweaking to sort this - anyone familiar with PS, Lightroom or similar should have no problems at all. Getting the best out of it will take a little time and experimentation - this is true of any serious printer!I honestly didn't find the setup particularly complicated, though getting it up to my office was a challenge. Be aware, this printer really is enormous and very, very heavy. This is my only gripe - it takes up more than half my desk!No printer comes with a USB cable, and few products with a print manual - complaints about these are just nitpicking.Canon offer ICC profiles for art paper, which saves a lot of trial and error, and it's produced excellent results from the cheaper papers I've used. Printing is quiet and quick and so far it's been no thirstier than any other quality inkjet.
