Comments about Canon PIXMA Pro 1 Inkjet Printer:
This is a top-quality printer, easy to use and giving consistently superb print quality. It's a big, heavy machine that is solid enough to last for a long time in a professional environment, with reasonable print costs at a good speed.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Great quality, massive, thirsty printer.
Bought the canon pixma pro-1 during the Black Friday sale and since then (set up and used for 30 days so far) have printed around 30 a3+ prints, several a3 and 20 a4 prints. The print quality if excellent, but it is now showing "very low" dark grey, color optimiser and photo black (iirc), with most of the other inks showing 1/4 to 1/3 left. This seems to be much lower than canon's quoted figures for number of prints, even taking into account the printer guzzling around a third of each ink cartridge during initial set-up.Also bear in mind art papers have a needlessly restrictive 35mm firmware-enforced border (which has been reduced to 30mm), and the length of prints has also been reduced. Also, the printer is massive. 27kg and very big.If I were to buy again I would go for an epson. The print quality is excellent with the canon pro-1 but it's massive and thirsty.

Absolute Stunning Prints
from Kirkcaldy, Scotlsnd.
The Canon PRO-1 printer is an incredible machine; it is a big heavy beast, but its output is absolutely stunning.BUT AT A PRICE, not just in the purchasing price of the machine, but in running cost, if you don't use it every day it will eat up your ink in cleaning cycles, it is unbelievable how much ink it uses to clean its heads just by the act of turning it off, or not using it for a few days, it seems like most printer manufacturers, Canon are very wasteful of YOUR INK, it is in their interest, as you can only buy their inks for it, (not that I would suggest you use compatibles for a machine like this) but you don't have the choice, I've looked into it, just because I was getting fed up with it eating ink.Although I would have considered using Lyson pigment inks if Lyson made tanks for the PRO-1, as I profile my monitors and printers with the Xrite ColorMunki Photo, and I have used Lyson inks with a previous Epson 2100 printer, and they were alright, But these Canon LUCIA inks are, like I have said "STUNNING" so I don't really know if I would change now even if Lyson did come out with a tank for this printer. But at £205.09 for a complete set of inks (cheapest I have found, Internet is great), it "ain't" cheap or even middling cheap, and if you change an ink tank its best to change the lot in one go, as it "MAY" go through a cleaning cycle for the new tank, and use up a load of ink in the other tanks at the same time, (I say it "MAY"! Because I have just done exactly that, AND IT DIDN'T, so I don't know what goes on), as it has used up a lot of ink in the past, but I do, do something different now, I run two instances of a scheduled batch file that prints a single line of text every twelve hours from a computer that never gets turned off (apart from update restarts), it doesn't use much ink doing this, especially in comparison to the amount it has in the past, actually I haven't notice any real drop in the printers ink status panel since I've been using it, but you do need to leave the printer on ALL THE TIME, so if you can write batch files, and run the scheduler, or you use it every day, then there isn't anything to beat it (in my opinion). But as a printer, it produces absolutely beautiful prints, I've not seen anything that beats it, and I've been looking because of its appetite for ink, but I think I've cracked that now.I have had this printer since October 2012.

About Me Infrequent User
Bought in Oct 2013 so lived with for 2 years now. Ok let's cut straight to the main points - it prints great prints. Now we've got that out the way. Next point - it's thirsty to the point of unusable. You MUST print from this printer at least once a week or it will drink all your ink, and I mean all your ink. If you're like me and rattle off about 5 or 10 prints and then leave the printer for more than a few weeks then it will do a self-clean next time. This will use about a third of a cartridge. Even if you just print 1 print then leave it too long, it will still drink all your ink. If you really get your timing wrong then you can end up only getting a dozen printouts per 12 cartridge set. I complained to Canon about this and was told that the printer is working as intended. I even sent them my full recorded usage and ink replacements. The claim of 1000/cartridge is laughable. I never turn it off (drinks ink on start-up just the same as it does when left for too long) and I never print on maximum quality. It looks great, it's quiet, it prints great, but if you are an occasional printer like me then it will cost you the earth to run.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I primarily bought this printer to produce top quality prints
Incredible ink usage! Don't be fooled by Canon's quoted print numbers per cartridge. They are for continuous runs in ideal conditions probably on the moon. I'm getting no where near their quote (arguably they should be taken on under the trade descriptions act). I can't get a straight answer from them as to whether the cartridges shipped with the printer are full or primer cartridges only - different answers from different people. These are not cheap cartridges and the usage is considerably more than that quoted - if this was a car it would be a 5mpg car. I'm still talking to Canon about this but doubt I'll get anywhere. Quality of print output is superb though and build quality is superb - arguably over engineered. On quality alone it would be 5* but because of ink usage it is 1* averaging out to 3*. Recommendation to a friend based on quality only.

too expensive to run
This printer is probably the best A3+ printer on the market , amazing quality prints , beautiful build quality and the software is well designed for the most part once you get familiar .So why only 2 stars , well this printer is just so expensive to run , i had read reviews which stated so and thought ok generally inkjet printers are not inexpensive to run but this machine is just unaffordable to run. Forget about any of the running costs you see on internet reviews regarding the canon pro 1 , this machine just devours ink , every time you switch it on you can almost see the ink levels go down . You will spend your time and money replacing the very expensive ink tanks . Yes 36ml to begin with in each tank & when the software tells you that the ink is depleted and refuses to print anymore , you swap it out only to see that there is actually between 1/4 to 1/3 of the ink left in the tank ( i know this because i opened one of the said empties and forced the ink out into a graduated cylinder to see 10ml left so thats 36ml minus 10ml ) . I have this printer 18months now & am researching third party inks , I really dont mind now if the third party inks destroy the printer , i would prefer that they work but the alternative is just to recycle the machine itself .I am a working professional photographer , i would say that i am a low volume printer so maybe if you are printing every day and the machine is never turned off and you can charge extremely well for you prints ( as you should considering print quality & costs ) this might be a viable option . I just wish canon had marketed this printer at those clients and not the low volume guys like me . You will still be looking at the ink waste considering whats left in the cartridge when the software refuses to let you print anymore & if you had to leave it powered on 24/7 , Well my environmental footprint is large enough without this .So if running costs are not an issue for you and you are not environmentally sensitive then this is the most wonderful product for you .mike
Another excellent printer from Canon

Another top quality printer from Canon. Easy to use, and delivers superb photographic quality prints that won't fade like those using dye inks.Having owned many photo printers over the years I've consistently found Canon to be the least prone to clogging (take heed Epson) and most consistent in terms of overall quality. This is a well built professional tool capable of turning our superb looking prints up to A3+ size.
