Please Note: This model is now discontinued and a new version is now available: Canon PowerShot S100 Black Digital Camera. The Canon PowerShot S90 marks a return to the market for the Canon S-series. The Canon S90 offers fully manual features for excellent image quality and a great user experience, including the Dual Anti-Noise system seen on the Canon G11, with a f2.0 wide-angle lens, a 3" PureColor II LCD display and the intuitive lens Control Ring. Full resolution images can be shot even at ISO 3200, and the enhanced i-Contrast technology as a result of DIGIC 4 means that your photos will retain low-light detail whilst reducing the chance of high-light blowout. More
High-sensitivity 10 MP CCD
A high-sensitivity CCD sensor gives outstanding image quality in a wide variety of lighting conditions. Even images taken at high ISOs show exceptionally low noise levels and a wide dynamic range.
f/2.0, 28mm wide, 3.8x zoom lens, with IS
A bright f/2.0 aperture allows exceptional versatility, capturing low-light images and fast-moving subjects at higher shutter speeds. A wide angle of 28mm lets you put more in the frame, while Canon’s optical IS reduces blur caused by camera shake.
Compact design & lens Control Ring
The PowerShot S90 combines pocket-sized proportions with a sophisticated lens Control Ring, to which functions such as step zoom, exposure, focus, and ISO can be assigned for fast, easy adjustment.
3.0” PureColor LCD II
A 3.0” PureColor LCD II screen (461K dots), with wide viewing angle, makes framing and reviewing shots a pleasure.
Dual Anti-Noise System with DIGIC 4
Working with the high-sensitivity image sensor, Canon’s DIGIC 4 processor delivers vastly improved noise performance across the ISO range. Shoot full-resolution images up to ISO 3200, or expand to ISO 12800 in (2.5MP) Low Light mode.
Full Manual control & RAW
For creative control while shooting, the PowerShot S90 features Full Manual mode. The option of RAW shooting with support for Canon’s Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software provides complete control over image parameters during post-shoot editing.
Smart Auto and Shooting Modes
Smart Auto mode analyses subject brightness, contrast, distance, hue and movement. Intelligent Scene Detection Technology then selects the scene type from 22 variables, applying the best settings for optimum output. 25 dedicated shooting modes are also available including Nostalgic and VGA movies.
For perfect portraits, Canon Face Detection technologies include FaceSelf-Timer and Face Select & Track, which tracks focus for a chosen person in the frame. Also included are Canon’s blur-beating Motion Detection Technology and Servo AF/AE, for accurate focus and exposure on moving subjects.
In shooting or playback, enhanced i-Contrast optimises dynamic range according to the scene - retaining detail in shadows and preventing overexposure of highlights. The result is natural images with the best possible contrast.
VGA movies (30fps) & HDMI
An HDMI mini output terminal lets you display still shots on any HDMI compatible TV without loss of quality.

Excellent but with flaws

About Me Pro Photographer
Comments about Canon PowerShot S90 Black Digital Camera:
Like many people I bought this as an SLR backup in my case particularly for when travelling light in the mountains. The camera produces excellent sharp generally well exposed pictures that are generally better than other compacts that I have used. There are flaws however, particularly very obvious purple colour fringing when using the camera at it's wide angle setting. It is possible to get rid of it from raw files using the supplied excellet software (DPP) but it is surprisingly troublesome in Photoshop. Other minor gripes include the flash that either burns out the subject or produces shadowy images (I hardly use it anyway) and the loose rear command dial that is easy to dial in exposure compensation in error. Others have commented on the need for a grip, however I've found it fine as it is. A small optical viewfinder would have been an asset especially if you have less than perfect eyesight like me! The availability of an underwater housing is particularly useful.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Brilliant little camera
About Me Photo Enthusiast
I was looking for a replacement for my long-serving Canon A95 compact, and wanted something that would produce good image quality whilst being a convenient size. The S90 has really surpassed my expectations on a number of fronts. Firstly this really is a small camera, meaning it can go everywhere with us. Secondly the picture quality is way above my expectations for a compact camera, particularly at high sensitivities. Thirdly I've found it very intuitive to use, and haven't yet felt the need to sit down and read the manual. My complaints are few, but the battery life really isn't too good (150 shots before it complained about low battery), and the rear buttons and dial are a little fiddly. But it feels like nitpicking.
Excellent compact with and without Auto
About Me Casual Photographer
I was looking for a camera that provided better manual control without giving up the pocketable compact size. The S90 works well on Auto and allows manual control when required. For Canon DSLR users, the options will be familiar and easy to switch between DSLR and compact.Picture quality seems much more consistent in a variety of light conditions than other compacts I have used.

i think this camera provides amazing quality and value for money when capturing images on the go - even for a profesional portfolio of photographs. The compact stills allows you to capture RAW with low light capability- i recently used it for event photography so allow ease of movement and it worked great under the dull light.

I bought the S90 as a companion to my EOS 5D and 5D II for those times when a pocket camera is all that can really come along for the trip. For example when on the motorbike! The quality of images I have had from this shirt pocket camera have been pretty impressive. Whilst they won't touch a current DSLR they will give some of the older generation ones a run for their money (I am thinking 10D/20D/300D etc here). On top of this the build quality is fantastic - this is a solid little piece of hardware. The only negatives are the controls can be a little small and fiddly for my big fingers, though not impossible by any means.I would absolutely reccommend this camera to anyone looking for the best image quality from a small carry everywhere camera. Top marks!
Great little camera
This camera is, as someone else said, what I've been waiting for for some time now. Features and functions are very good, allwoing the photographer to know, and have control of, what's going on. Getting out of the pixel race and dropping back to 10MP is a very good move - quality is much better and 10MP is more than enough for most htings, esp. those you would do with a compact. I chose this over the G11 as, while the G11 has better hadling etc. it is big enough to need to be carrie dover the shoulder or round the neck, whereas the S90 can go in a pocket quite easily. Of course, I would like bigger controls, a viewfinder*, larger sensor, but these things would impact on compactness so I'm happy to live without them for this type of camera. The controls take a little bit of learning, but only a little bit. The only criticism that comes to mind is that the rear dial is quite loose and it's easy to dail in some exposure compensation inadvertantely. You get used to checking it though so not a big deal. So, to sum up, I am well pleased with the S90, and would recommend it.Oh yes, and I like the fact that it produces RAW files. You can use jpg for quickness if you do 'snaps' and then RAW if anything you want to take more time over comes up.One more thing - I added a handgrip, made by Richard Franiec in the USA, and it improves the handling immensely. Best compact on the market

I've been waiting for a camera like this for years. Finally the S90 has arrived and provided practical answers to many problems associated with compact cameras.I bought the S90 because we've just had our first child and being a pro photographer all I have is large Canon SLR's and specialist compacts not really suited to everyday family situations! The 10 MP count is great and I applaud Canon for taking the brave step of reducing pixel count to increase image quality. I can't see any reason to want more than this. My 1D mk3 regularly produces magazine covers and double page spreads with a 10 MP sensor and I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would need more pixels in a compact camera. It features a great fast lens (faster than the G11) and sports much of its larger siblings (G11) electronics without the bulk. The case and styling are second to none in my opinion.Overall a lovely feature packed minimalist design with outstanding image quality given its size. If you like shooting manual or semi auto with SLR's then the S90 will be second nature to you straight out of the box.

I read that the best camera is the one you have with you. In truth an SLR is most likely to be technically the best but in my view the Canon S90 is the nearest thing to a pocket SLR and its size means that you are more likely have it with you when a photographic opportunity presents itself. Images are great - both Raw and JPG. An f2.0 lens means plenty of light getting in with less need to increase ISO settings. Unbelievable range of functions allowing total control of pictures taken in a range of conditions.
Becoming industry standard point and shoot camera.
I Got the S90 just before Christmas as I needed a new camera, I was looking for a camera that would bring all the features of an DSLR, but in a more usable size and form. The S90 was recommended to me by a few professional photographer's I know, they say its their 'carry around' camera, for when they need to get an image on the spot.Lighter that the G10 or G11, but with minimal difference in Image quality, its a brilliant performer.I would specifically recommend it to people wanting to dip their toe into the world of photography, who want to be able to use settings and get a better picture, but don't want to lug around a big pice of kit.Any minor quibbles would be the price (although coming down rapidly) and getting full use from all functions takes some getting used to. Although, to have as many full DSLR functions in this size a camera, it's understandable.Overall, and amazing piece of kit, I'm very happy with mine.
Good camera. Handling improved by fitting 3rd-party grip (search online). More settings than you'll ever use, but the basics are all good.
