Comments about Elinchrom BXRi 250 Twin Flash Head Kit:

Having given a lot of thought to which make and model to buy, I settled for the Elinchrom BXRI 250 kit. First off the kit works well and the built in skyport makes setting up lighting ratio's a breeze. Given you have four groups, means even more flexibility, also use with my Nikon strobes triggered with other skyports receivers.

The heads are very evenly matched in output but you only get 3.6 stops adjustment not four as expected. The 1/10 stops steps adjustment are quiet accurate, but not strictly linear especially at the lower end of the power range.

Flash tube temperature is measured lower than advertised, at around 4720k on both heads with different dishes and soft boxes without the diffusers fitted, lower than the 5360k advertised at full power, with the diffuser fitted to the soft box, this drops to 4500k. It's nice to see that it does not move much when the output is lowered.

The built in fans switch on and off as necessary, but I find them a little too noisy, especially when both are running together, they appear to come on too often for my liking but unlike my Nikon flashes that stop working after twenty full power pops, the Elinchrom's keep on firing. In fact the fans will run with just using the modelling lamps.

The soft boxes out of the bag were hard to assemble, but after a few assemblies I now find them to be vey easy. Folding the reflectors up after use always causes me trouble, I never seam able to make a neat job of it. Light coverage is reasonable given there is no inner defuser and coverage is adequate for my needs.

The heads take a 7mm brolly shaft close to the flash tube for even wide light distribution, but the heads will also take "normal" brollies in a location just below the heads, very convenient.

Stand are ok, but nothing to shout about, there are better stands out there, but if one is careful especially when adjusting them with heads on, they should do the intended job with reasonable height adjustment.

The supplied cases do their job reasonably well providing you don't want to carry additional reflector dishes, or three flash heads, if so you will need a different case.

Overall I'm pleased with lights and find the light quality very pleasing bearing mind that I colour correct, using my Sekonic C500 and and set exposure using my Sekonic L-758.

The kit provides a good base on which to build your lighting kit, and being lightweight makes for a good mobile outfit.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
