The innovative design of the Gitzo GH1780 Centre Ball Head with Quick Release is designed to compliment the range of high performance Gitzo tripods. designed to be perfectly balanced and to take a high load whilst providing smoothness, a low centre of gravity, a greater range of tilt angles and minimal drift once locked. More
SPRING LOCK Gitzo's new centre SADL (Spring Assisted Double Lock) is a patent pending system that combines two locking systems in one that maximises both the smoothness and locking power. A high friction metal guarantees a high efficiency lock while the PTFE (a special treatment that generates a unique ultra-smooth surface and reduces friction between moving parts) bushing, controlled by a pre loaded spring, maximises smoothness and control.
SAFE GRIP Safe Grip is a material that means a safer lock between your camera and the head plate, helping to prevent the camera from moving or slipping. It is used on quick release plates and in applications where the camera equipment is screwed directly to the support, to reduce pivoting and twisting.
SAFE LOCK Safe Lock is a special techno polymer that maximises locking torque and equipment stabilisation. Used on the upper discs of tripods and heads, and in applications where the equipment is rotated and screwed onto the support, to eliminate the smallest of movements and vibration.
SEPARATE PAN CONTROL When using a ball head, the ability to lock and unlock the panoramic movement independent of normal tilt movements is convenient for panoramic photography and when a high level of control is required.
LEVELLING BUBBLE The new levelling system made of three independent levelling bubbles on the quick release plate, and one in the ball stem, helps to guarantee perfectly levelled images. The problem that affects many high quality heads in the market regarding drift angle is minimised with an outstanding value of 0.03°.
BUBBLE BALL Gitzo have developed an exclusive technology that enables them to produce high quality, completely round hollow spheres, with a ultra thin wall, for an incredible weight reduction. Gitzo Bubble Ball also features a perfected PTFE treatment that further reduces the surface friction for enhanced performance and ease of use.

Great Head, Weak Plate
Comments about Gitzo GH1780QR Series 1 Centre Ball Head:
Overall this is a very good head, light but well able to manage large loads with smooth operation and a precise hold. If you only use it with the camera horizontal you are unlikely to have any significant complaint. The weakness becomes apparent if you try to flip the camera to vertical position. Despite Gitzo's vaunted anti-slip polymer, it just can't hold a large DSLR with zoom lens in a fixed position unless the screw has been tightened well beyond normal hand-tightness. This is exacerbated by the fact that the plate screw is relatively small with a knurled edge and screwdriver slot, rather than the fold-out lever of its Manfrotto stablemates. (Note that I'm a weightlifter by sport, so if I can't get it sufficiently tight by hand then this is going to be a common problem).Unfortunately the Gitzo plate system isn't compatible with L-Plates or profiled camera plates from the likes of Kirk or RRS, and although Gitzo sell an adapter it doesn't fit.I like this head and want to make it work as my main head when travelling, but I'm still working on the best plate solution.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
