Comments about Joby Gorillapod SLR Zoom Tripod:

Having got a lot of use out of my regular Gorillapod with my digi compact, when I upgraded to DSLR I figured I should upgrade my tripod too. Definitely the right move. Although a lot bigger and bulkier than the original, the Gorillapod Zoom SLR is just as useful. Whether you're shooting macro on a tabletop or taking self-portraits on holiday, this thing does it all.

There is a but however, and it's a big one. Without some sort of ball-and-socket head, this is quite difficult to set up. The camera mounts directly to the yoke at the top of the legs, meaning any angle adjustments must be made with the legs. With a ball head on it, you have so much more freedom to move around quickly and effortlessly. It may almost double to cost, but it's worth it.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Joby Gorillapod SLR Zoom Tripod:

I have had this for a couple of months and i am very happy with it. I was trying to decide between this and a mini tripod and I am quite glad I chose this, as it fits in my bag easily and can be mounted onto nearly any surface. Also it can stretch out really low so can practically be on the floor without having your camera in the muck and mold on the floor itself.

The only problem is that you have to be quite careful with the balance if you have a heavy lens on it as it will become top-heavy.

In the past I have placed this on branches of trees, in the middle of the road, on my passenger headrest in my car and many other places, it is a very versatile object and I would quite happily buy another one but I don't think i will need to as they are built very well in my opinion.

its great i have used it to stick onto trees, hung off fences and well places on most places. its quite good and once its in place its stable

it holds my nikon d60 and sigma 10-20 easy which is useful for long exposures at night

its well worth the money and another benefit is that it can fit in a bag easily unlike normal tripods

Bought this to chuck in ...

              By AFRocks

              from Dorchester, Dorset

              See all my reviews

Comments about Joby Gorillapod SLR Zoom Tripod:

Bought this to chuck in my rucksack when I didn't fancy carrying a full tripod around. I also intend to use this abroad for obligatory low-light city shots as I don't like the thought of taking my 055XProB on an aeroplane... Not only is it small, it can wrap around itself to fit into smallish spaces, and for the amount of weight it can carry it weighs almost nothing.

Overall, I think this is a really nice piece of kit. It takes some practice to get it set up- and more than a little faith the first few times you attach a camera- but once securely wrapped around a solid object it doesn't sag.

However, on some surfaces it can slide and so in addition to wrapping the legs around it also helps to secure one against an upright to keep the pod from slipping. I also think that some surfaces are probably too wide to give the gorillapod maximum security- I like to get the legs wrapped around several times and so would avoid anything above a couple of inches in diametre. When setting it up on the top of a post as opposed to wrapped around then it gets more stable...

I also think that a suitable Ballhead is essential- I can't imagine trying to position the gorillapod inthe most secure position while also keeping the camera platform level. I use a 496RC2 on mine and they suit each other very well. It comes supplied with a handy thread-converter for the very purpose of attaching a wide range of tripod heads.

Ultimately, the proof is in the pudding. I left the Gorillapod attached to a bannister rail sideways for two days with my 450D and Sigma 30 f1.4 attached to the 496RC2 and it didn't budge at all. Using it I can get some cheeky low-light shots that I would otherwise need several kilos of tripod for, and I can use it to set up self-timed shots of myself when out and about. That is good enough for me.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Great for a quick steady tripod. Only prob is you have to put the camera on first as there is no quick release. But a bit of planning should be cool. handy with a remote trigger so you dont have to touch it again

                  By TrevD

                  from Basingstoke, UK

Comments about Joby Gorillapod SLR Zoom Tripod:

This was an excellent purchase however I was just amazed that there is no warning that it is not sold with a Ball Head. The Gorillapod is an exceptional item but it is not easy getting the camera mounted on & off it without the Ball Head. Once I have received the Ball Head which I'm about to order I am sure this is going to be the best addition to by camera accessories. Please warn future buyers about the Ball Head not being supplied and also about the cost of the Ball Head. Note my rating of Ease of use is assuming one is using it without the Ball Head.
