While the price of L brackets has always put me off as I feel they are rather expensive for what is essentially a shaped lump of metal, I eventually got fed up of having to shunt my tripod head over 90 degrees every time I wanted to do a portrait shot, offbalancing the tripod and changing my composition in the process

The Kirk bracket is an excellent fit, it sits on the bottom of my camera perfectly and doesn't budge in the slightest once tightened in place, and as would be expected, fits my arca swiss clamps as solidly as any other plate I've used and serves it's purpose perfectly

There are a few manufacturers of L brackets out there but for me Kirk was the only option for one simple reason. All L brackets that I've seen include a standard 1/4" screw thread in the bottom, but in most cases this screw is off centre, whereas the Kirk one is central. For me this was a deciding factor because I use the Capture Clip system instead of camera straps, which necessitates the use of a very specific adapter plate that I needed to be able to add to the L bracket, and with an off centre screw hole this would have been very awkward, whereas with the centred Kirk screw this is a non-issue

So, in conclusion, it does exactly what would be expected of it, is rock solid, and is in my eyes designed better than it's competitors due to that centred screw thread. As with all L brackets, I still feel they're a lot of money for what they are, but I guess such precision machined aluminium has to come at a premium. Highly recommended if you can justify the cost

I bought this bracket to go with my Kirk head, to achieve a better mount when shooting in portrait format, and it does all I hoped for. The camera balances on the tripod head rather than being attached from the side, making it much easier to move, fix and operate the camera. Light, beautifully made and slim - I keep mine on the camera most of the time. A joy.
