Comments about Kirk NC-300 Replacement Lens Collar for Nikon 300mm f4 AF-S:

I can't think why Nikon don't make this product themselves - it's such a huge improvement over the standard collar and foot for this lens. The trickiest part of the operation is to detach the old collar from the lens, (which is achieved by loosening it as far as it will go, turning it so the foot is above the focus scale and then wobbling it toward the lens mount end), after which the new collar just snaps into place.
Once it's there the rotation is super-smooth, courtesy of a precise fit and a layer of PTFE at every point where the collar contacts the lens. When the knob is tightened (easy with gloves on, by the way) it's completely solid.
The only disadvantages are that it's quite expensive, once you've already bought the lens that it goes on, and that you'll need a good (and probably expensive) head and tripod to make the best use of it
