Lastolite 40x120cm Hotrod Strip Softbox

Adding to the traditional square Ezybox Hotshoe softbox Lastolite now offer the Hotrod Strip softbox for use with battery operated flashguns. It is available in two different sizes (30x120cm and 40x120cm) and features an inner diffusion panel and an adapter plate with rods. The flashgun simply slides into a shoe mount attached to the adapter plate. The Hotrod Strip provides a narrow band of light, useful for creating side lighting for full length fashion or portraits or for a soft hair light. The narrow profile also allows for achieving elongated catch lights in product photography.

[...]his is a great product for speedlight users (Strobists), it's 'rodded' design makes it very sturdy when It is put up, but unfortunately makes it a little slow to get set up (compared to say, the Easy Box Hot Shoe) but for me, it is worth it to have the extra stability.The internal baffle makes a good job at controlling the hotspot given of by speedlights and spreads the lights nice and evenly, the external baffle gives good soft light. I really like the "edgy" light given off by removing the external baffle when shooting outdoor portraiture and used as rim lights. The supplied "speed ring" is well made and strong, I was initially disappointed that it was made form plastic but in hindsight this is preferable as it stops other gear form getting scratched I my bag. One down side (and this may sound petty) is that the supplied bag is fastened along the top with Velcro which makes it very frustrating when getting it in and out of the bag because there is a vast majority of Velcro on the product... you can imagine!!!All in all this product is very good and more versatile that I first anticipated. It is best used when paired whith another as rim lights. I would say that the 40X120CM is the way to go I feel the smaller sized one maybe too small. I would highly recommend it to any portrait/product photographer that uses speedlights.
