The Lastolite HiLite backgrounds range allows the photographer to undertake ‘High Key’ photography on location and in restrictive spaces. The white background itself can be rear-lighted so there is no longer a need to use a background light behind the subject and because the background is illuminated, the subject can stand right in front of it without casting a shadow. The HiLite backgrounds also work as a large rear softbox, illuminating the subject, meaning you can use just one other flash head to light the subject from the front. The Lastolite HiLite background is collapsible so can be easily stored and transported. This larger 6' x 7' version is ideal for full length portraits and small group shots. Please note that the train is sold separately. More
4 Nov 2010 - Since its introduction some years ago, the Lastolite HiLite background has been increasingly popular with portrait photographers. Sadly, I still get a lot of correspondence about the HiLite background from photographers who struggle to achieve the look that they expected. That’s why I’m putting pen to paper, not in the form of a review as such, but just to reassure you that using the HiLite need not be a struggle. How to get the most out of your HiLite...

About Me Pro Photographer
Comments about Lastolite HiLite Background 6x7 ft:
I found that it was very easy to set up and put to use. The assembly was so easy that it doesn't really need a read of the instructions.Inserting lights into the sides of the unit was simple, and it dosn't matter which edge you use, you can still use the free sides to insert a light or two as there are zipped slots on all sides. However, putting it back in the bag was, for me, a struggle, I am sure its just technique that I need to learn. Its now back in its bag, but I need some space and time to practice getting it to self collapse (as in the video's on lastolites website, to be fully confident on taking it to an event, where its use will be of great use.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

About Me Semi-pro Photographer
this is lightweight and portable, comes in a round carry bag same size as my reflectorI use it for mainly portrait work in peoples' homes and as long as they have a 7' space it is idealI found it easy to set up and take down but was glad of having watched the Hilite tutorial video before attempting to collapse it!

Great for hi-key photography perfect results every time with no editing required
Quick and effective

Used for photographing at an event when printing on site giving perfect clean high key backgrounds. Essential when you're limited for space as subjects can stand practically up against the background without light spilling on to them. Two lights are required to avoid and gradation on the background
Comment of Lastolite HiLite background
from Epsom, Surrey
I use this product for portrait photography and have really enjoyed using it. It is easy to set up and consistently gives a brilliant white background, which is ideal for portraits- individuals or small groups. However, be warned, it's not the easiest backgrounds to collapse even though I use several other Lastolite backgrounds. The first time it took me nearly 30min to collapse it and I was very afraid of damaging it. Since there is nothing else on the market which does the job we have no options. Lastolite need to come up with a better design.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
4 years and still going strong!
About Me Photo Enthusiast
I use this to shoot small family portraits in other peoples homes. Up until the start of this year with just a 200/400 d-lite combo (bought two more now).It has started to bow slightly on one side and the train has been battered, but it's still serviceable.Putting it away needs practice, but again, watch the videos online. I'm only just over 5 foot and can manage on my own!An excellent piece of kit I've relied on to make a little extra money. Added the black velvet cover some time ago as well which is also great.
Ideal in so many ways
If you are a pro working away from the studio or a keen amateur you will not be disappointed that you invested in this background.I have a home studio setup in a spare room but if I just want to take shots in a less formal setting without sacrificing quality I use the HiLite. It's ideal for putting up in any space in the house (yours or someone else's) its light and easy to setup and that means it gets plenty of use.I have used it at home for impromptu shoots with the grandchildren and taken it along to family gatherings, birthday parties and christening for example and the result was that people were falling over themselves to get their picture taken. This meant we had fun and created some great 'keepers' that will be enjoyed by the whole family/ friends that were there.

Value for money
Its great for portability
I have used this background now at a few different shoots. Ranging from a set up for a family shoot inside someones house, to a commercial shoot in a large hall. I found in total that its easy to pop open, get some lights inside and start shooting. The trouble comes when you have to put the thing away.I spent around 20 minutes at the family shoot trying to put it away. Its a difficult processed of bending and shaping it, and because of its size, it needs some dedication. Overall great results for high key images, and really simple to get set up really.
Perfect for small group setups
Acquired this for a huge family portait shoot at home location. Not knowing what to expect I needed something consistent if they wasn't a suitable working space. With setup taking less than 5 minutes from bag to shooting and even less time to put away. Don't worry about the putting away part - a couple youtube videos and now I can fold it up in under 10 seconds. Easy! Shooting with three speedlights on wireless triggers (one in background, one main and one fill/floor) gave consistent results nearly everytime and took only a few adjustments to get right. In partnership with the vinyl train I was able to get full length, sudio quality shots with a very little PP correction. Very impressed and client coulnd't believe the amazing results taken in their own front room.It is no problem for couples, families of 4 or less but then you start getting the outer frame in the shot when you include more people. If you position group carefully and get your viewpoint right it can be done, but really it is not designed for anymore than a small group. The ideal backdrop setup for mobile photographers. Producing high key photographs with ease.
