Please note that delivery may take up to 48 hours on this item whilst the promotion of the FREE Vinyl Train is running The Lastolite HiLite backgrounds range allows the photographer to undertake ‘High Key’ photography on location and in restrictive spaces. The white background itself can be rear-lighted so there is no longer a need to use a background light behind the subject and because the background is illuminated, the subject can stand right in front of it without casting a shadow. The HiLite backgrounds also work as a large rear softbox, illuminating the subject, meaning you can use just one other flash head to light the subject from the front. The Lastolite HiLite background is collapsible so can be easily stored and transported. This larger 6' x 7' version is ideal for full length portraits and small group shots. Please note that the train is sold separately. More
4 Nov 2010 - Since its introduction some years ago, the Lastolite HiLite background has been increasingly popular with portrait photographers. Sadly, I still get a lot of correspondence about the HiLite background from photographers who struggle to achieve the look that they expected. That’s why I’m putting pen to paper, not in the form of a review as such, but just to reassure you that using the HiLite need not be a struggle. How to get the most out of your HiLite...

Firstly it's very easy to set up. You can be up and running in minutes. It takes up very little space compared with a vinyl train/ stand system.Folding it up can be a bit tricky at times: particularly if the steel frame inverts itself and it can be very difficult to un-invert it again, but this has happened only once so far. I can now fold it in less than 15s. Buy good lights: at least 400J units. You can get away with a two light system, but I'd recommend three lights. Seeing as a pair of umbrella light units costs no more that a speedlite you can hardly complain! It gives great results too- it makes high key work so much simpler. I've never done high key portrait work before (or much portrait for that matter) and after a few hours of playing I was getting great results. Had I had a light meter, I'd have got to grips with it even quicker. Save yourself a lot of time and hassle and buy a light meter, it makes setting up SO much easier and painless.I have to say I love it.I've attached two images, one being one of the photos taken with the Hitlite, the second of the unit itself. Please note I used a wide angle lens, so the Hilite looks a lot wider than it is!

I bought this when they first came out and was very pleased with it. Within a couple of months the sides and top and bottom had started to bow in, The width in the middle is now about 2 Ft less than the ends, making it almost unusable.[...] I spoke to a salesperson on the Manfrotto stand at last years Focus exibition and was told they would get in touch to sort it out - they didn't. I spoke to the product development manager at this years Focus, and he asked me to email him. I emailed him with details and a photograph of the problem and guess what - he hasn't replied. In short, a great idea that works really well, but doesn't last very long - unless I was unfortunate to have a bad one. [...]

Comments about Lastolite HiLite Background 6x7 ft:
This product is great to take to peoples homes and still produce studio results.I began making money on my first outing. Set up is very easy and once you have found the best settings for you and your camera you cant go wrong.I watched clip after clip trying to work out best settings but to be honest i suggest you forget all that and best way is trial and error practicing. Putting it away can be a challenge as you tube will demonstrate but it really is a knack and generaly it goes back in the bag first time.

About Me Photo Enthusiast
Getting this product right requires a good working knowledge of off camera flash; no trouble for professionals, but not so easy for newbies. I am still working on the best lighting solution for using this product in the field: one flash gun in the side of the product will not be good enough. So, that means two flash guns in the product.. and then a way of lighting the dreaded join between Hi Lite and vinyl train, if you want full length shots, and don't want to alter the image in Lightroom or Photoshop. Good for single, perhaps twin headshots; full length groups of three or four much more tricky. Am advised that two Elinchrom Quadra Ranger lights would be satisfactory, but reckon that won't sort out the train. Still, it can be carried, is portable, and although it is tricky to fold the Hi Lite up after use, the paper alternative and support seems worse!

With the addition of a bowens flash this produces some wonderful hi key images.
Just the job
Bought to achieve clean white backgrounds for people and pet portraits. I use with one Bowens 400 in the hilite and one Bowens 400 in front (brolly). Pretty easy to get the right balance for head shots and three - quarters (about 1 stop more in the background). Not so easy to get clean white between hilite and floor (even with the vinyl train) and I have used a speedlite to add light in this area. This is a bit tricky to get right and it's probably quicker to clean up in post processing. Still working on the finer points but no complaints with the hilite - it does exactly what it's supposed to do. Definitely saves a lot of space (and uses less strobes) compared to a paper roll set up which I don't have the space for. Great service and quick delivery from WEX - got the vinyl train free on special offer, so very pleased!

About Me Pro Photographer
Purchased this to film presenter-to-camera sequences for infovideos. Works really well. Takes up far less space than having a separate background than needs lighting too.
A must have for portrait photographers! really quick and easy 1 man set up and take down with vinyl train is great and you only need one strobe or even flash at full power for perfect result. would highly recommend. worth every penny.
Big but a bit of a handfull packing up
I found that it was very easy to set up and put to use. The assembly was so easy that it doesn't really need a read of the instructions.Inserting lights into the sides of the unit was simple, and it dosn't matter which edge you use, you can still use the free sides to insert a light or two as there are zipped slots on all sides. However, putting it back in the bag was, for me, a struggle, I am sure its just technique that I need to learn. Its now back in its bag, but I need some space and time to practice getting it to self collapse (as in the video's on lastolites website, to be fully confident on taking it to an event, where its use will be of great use.
Great bit of kit - wish it were cheaper

this is lightweight and portable, comes in a round carry bag same size as my reflectorI use it for mainly portrait work in peoples' homes and as long as they have a 7' space it is idealI found it easy to set up and take down but was glad of having watched the Hilite tutorial video before attempting to collapse it!
I would buy this product again

Great for hi-key photography perfect results every time with no editing required
Quick and effective

Used for photographing at an event when printing on site giving perfect clean high key backgrounds. Essential when you're limited for space as subjects can stand practically up against the background without light spilling on to them. Two lights are required to avoid and gradation on the background
