Comments about Manfrotto 055CX3 Carbon Fibre Tripod:
It is so far my best ever tripod. Very stable, solid and lightweight. I am using it with short central column which I bought additionaly. This is because the legs and the head are long enough so no need to use the long column. I could use instead low angle adapter but decided to get short column.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Just what I was looking for
By Giant Squid
As a wildlife photographer I needed a tripod that would support my larger lenses, and I also wanted to be able to get down really low if necessary. This tripod is great for both. In order to get low I've permanently removed the centre column piece, which is very easily done, and the legs, by holding down the catches at the top of each leg can then be moved out as far as you wish. The only slight problem I have is the inability to lock it into position when the legs are practically parallel to the floor. You do get a gentle sinking of the legs until the centre mount touches the floor. I don't miss the centre column at all, with legs fully extended, and a tripod head attached, it's considerably taller than I am. Although I am only 5'4", so the taller photographer may wish to keep the centre column in. In summary, offers great flexibility, very sturdy, and pretty lightweight.

About Me Hobbyist/Enthusiast
I upgraded to this tripod when a heavier head piece and lens meant I started to meet the stability limits of my old Manfrotto 190xprob, and decided that a chunkier carbon fibre one was the order of the day.The 055 series has chunkier legs than the 190 series, offering greater stability, and this model being carbon fibre means it has both a more rigid construction, adding to it's stability, and is lighter weight than an equivalent alumnium tripod. In fact despite being much chunkier, this model is actually a fraction lighter than my old 190xprob.One thing I have grown to hate about many tripods over the years is the centre column. I never use them raised as they add a point of instability, and also I do a lot of wildlife photography, so sometimes find myself in scenarios where I want to be at ground level, but also want the stability and weight bearing advantages of my tripod, the presence of a centre column makes this basically impossible. While models with a column that swings horizontally seem like a valid solution (and indeed was one of the reasons I bought the 190xprob originally), it doesn't really work for this scenario as then your head piece is sideways on so it just isn't practical. What I love about this particular model and one of the main reasons for my purchase is the included low level adapter stored in the bottom of the centre column. Simply unclip it, slide out the column, put the adapter in it's place and voila, no more centre column, so the tripod can easily be collapsed to floor level as needed. I removed the centre column from mine the day I got it and it has sat in the cupboard ever since. I am about 5'8" and with the legs fully extended, the tripod is just above my eye level, so I have never once missed the extra height of the column. A further advantage is that you can pick up additional low level adapters fairly cheap, so if like me you own more than one type of tripod head, you can have the heads pre-attached to different adapters and switch them out quickly and easily by simply loosening the column tightening screw, rather than having to faff about completely unthreading the head to screw another back in.In terms of general use, no complaints, the legs use the tried and true lever release mechanism to adjust the length, they slide smoothly when released and lock down tightly, no play in the joints once locked down. An easy to grip thumb release at the top enables easy adjustment of the leg angle, between the two it is quick and easy to adjust the legs to suit whatever kind of terrain you find yourself inAll in all I have been thoroughly impressed by my CX3 and would highly recommend it. The only downside I guess is that it doesn't have the same weight rating of more expensive tripods, but for non-pros like myself who aren't packing 600mm prime lenses etc. it is more than adequate and at about half the price of the kind of tripod favoured by pros, is vastly more affordable

Macro photography of Fungi
My original Manfrotto 055CLB had served me well for several years for the macro photography of fungi but the weight was becoming an issue, especially on long days in the field. I needed to look at a carbon fibre tripod!I personally find the Q90 system awkward to use so it was important to choose a model with minimum height and which allowed the use of the Low angle Adaptor as in the 055CLB model. Not only did the Manfrotto 055CX3 Carbon Fibre Tripod meet these requirements but it also allowed the legs to be positioned at an angle greater than the horizontal. A very useful feature if the ground has a 'dip' in the area of use.I can highly recommend this tripod.
