The ability to move the center column of the Manfrotto 055 XPRO tripod to a horizontal orientation is quite neat, it works well for macro photography and getting the camera into awkward places but it means the tripod head is 90 degrees off its natural orientation too, which can make it very awkward to shoot close to the ground.

The length of the standard centre column also means the minimum height of the tripod is limited to the height of the column.

If you struggle to shoot close to the ground using the standard centre column of your 055 X series tripod, this short column might be just what you are looking for. It allows you to shoot much lower to the ground and also makes your tripod a bit lighter too. As it only takes a couple of minutes to switch columns and transfer your head it is possible to keep both columns with you and use whichever is most appropriate at the time.
