I bought this tripod for general home studio / macro work. In fairness it performs as expected. My only concern is that when the centre column is in the horizontal position and extended out it does tend to shake a little and may be unstable if fully extended (hence the 4 stars). That said using an 85mm macro lens would tend to exaggerate any movement in any event. However when the centre column is upright I have found the tripod to be as solid as a rock. The legs lock in well and there is a handy little spirit level built in to aid in levelling the tripod.

I would recommend this tripod as in my opinion it's a good balance between price and performance. Build quality is exceptional as expected from Manfrotto. As the saying goes you get what you pay for and this certainly is the case with this tripod.

Very good bit of kit for the price. Stability and structure is great for this price range. Can get heavy if out on long landscape shoots, especially in English weather

Great tripod for the price.

Wanted a decent tripod that wasn't going to brake the bank but the same time would hold my D7000 safe.

Trust this tripod as it looks, feels and is extremely strong.

Camera lives on it rather than on the table.

Maybe a little on the heavy side if you're out on a hike but it's not too bad.

Grate range of height adjustments too, can go from say about 10cm off the floor right up to about 7ft.

Does exactly what it says on the tin. I have used this tripod on the beach in sea water. Always cleans up well. Would recommend.

I have used this tripod for doing some night shoots. The legs are easy to adjust and it is very stable once set up. I love the horizontal centre column for getting those low down shoots, a great tripod is a little on the heavy side.

Great tripod, rock solid. I have mine paired with a Gittos Series II [1300] ball head.

Only 2 Cons:
1)Little on the heavy side, I knew this when I brought it and the extra weight is useful for those crisp photos even in windy conditions. When I can afford may invest in a 'carbon' tripod for the hill/travel.

2)Only comes with rubber feet, I like the retractable spikes that are on even the cheapest tripods for when I'm working on ice and snow.

This is one amazing tripod and does everything a good tripod should. It has the perfect balance of features, weight, stability and above all cost.

I have used many tripods including older versions of the 055 and this is just the best. Not as stable as the bigger 058 or 475 Manfrotto tripods but much lighter and easier to use and travel with.

The 055XPROB is so good unless you are spending some serious money on a tripod (Gitzo) I can honestly say save your money. The carbon versions of the 055 and bigger 057 are no better and if you want carbon save up some more (a lot, lot more) for a really good tripod in a Gitzo.

For the money, nothing comes close to the 055XPROB.

Not exactly lightweight but carbon fibre was out of the question. Well made and just exudes quality of build. Easy to use and set up, the built in level helps. Used with 410 geared head or any other Manfrotto head it just works so well. The horizontal centre column is an added bonus, but weight the tripod down to ensure your kit doesn't tip it over if using a heavy camera.
