Inside the 501HDV is a powerful new feature that takes its inspiration from our top professional video head models – a fixed counterbalance spring (set for a typical weight of camera + accessories of 2.5kg) that helps ensure both smoother tilt movements and greater equipment safety even when tilt locks are inadvertently left off. The easy-to-reach on/off switch allows the counterbalance system to be disengaged or re-engaged for different filming setups. But from the outside, the first thing that you’ll notice about the new 501HDV video head is its updated design – completely retuned for much improved ergonomics with locks and knobs that allow a more solid grip and better fingertip control. The 501HDV inherits its separate pan and tilt locks, gradual tilt friction adjustment system, fl at base (with standard 3/8” thread), quick release camera plate and repositionable pan bar from its successful predecessor.

I wanted a new Video head for shooting wildlife and checked out all the other products available and found the Manfrotto 501 had all the features I needed and was in my budget. All the others were either cheap and nasty or well out of my price range. I have tested this head with my Nikon setup which includes a 70-200mm f2.8 with rail system, follow focus and external monitor which is quite a weight and find that the head takes it all in its stride and has a nice fluid movement and would recommend this to anyone who is in need of a quality head at the right price. It has a good feel to it and does what it says on the box. [...]Well pleased.

I use this to support a Leica Telescope for Birdwatching and the damping is extremely smooth, solid, and accurate and holds the scope steady even with a camara on the eyepiece fo digiscoping.
