The Manfrotto Maxima is an 84 LED panel with high quality 6000°K output. Designed for use with both DSLR and hybrid DSLRs it includes the hybrid function allowing you to switch from a continuous beam to a flash with 4X the output. In this way the panel can provide a continuous light when shooting video but also adds the flash capability when switching to the photo mode. The light has a built-in rechargeable lithium battery and is supplied with a ball head mount that allows you to attach the light either to the hot shoe of your camera, a tripod head or light stand (3/8'' thread). It also features the “DUO” position allowing you to attach the light either in vertical or horizontal position and to stack more than one LED panel in order to increase the total output. A rear facing LED lights up the camera command dials when shooting in darkness and the dimmer allows control over the output (0-100% dimmability). Also included are a set of diffusers and gels to soften the light or to change the colour temperature.

The ML840H is quite handy but limited by certain physical properties and design choices.

The first thing to note is the light cone is narrower than you might prefer, so do check that is okay for you. See the Manfrotto YouTube video and note how it's mostly lighting the model's face. The light it provides is nice and even over the area it does light.

Secondly it is pretty light-weight. I saw a weight somewhere that I think was for the whole boxed product, but the WEx weight looks more realistic.

Next it isn't as bright as you might like, so don't think of it as a great mid-long range light. However it is also very bright when pointed at your eyes from short distances. I think this and the narrow cone of light is just a function of what you can do with a unit this size and with this number of LEDs. Any more light from a source that size would really be too much to shine in peoples' faces. A wider spread would lower the brightness noticeably with range.

One annoying thing is it doesn't seem to run from the mains adapter. You can use it with the adapter connected, but that will run down the battery and it will stop again. (Charging time is 3 hours to 80%.)

It is useful to light objects you are photographing indoors, I could light A4 size things with maybe 5" lit round the edges and get 9.5EV on them, so about 1/50 of a sec at f4 and ISO 100.

One other use is as a flashgun for older/backup cameras that you don't want to rush around buying flashguns for. It's not super-bright but they do include the cable to connect to the camera, which is handy (of course the camera needs to support this). For example I shoot Canon as my main camera and m43 when I want less weight, I have no plans to buy a Panasonic flash but I could use this on that camera and it is certainly lighter than a 580EXII.

In summary it is light-weight and useful enough that I am happy with my purchase.
