The Metz 44 AF-1 flash gun is very easy to use and perfect for beginners. The head can be tilted 90 deg. horizontal (e.g. to bounce of the ceiling) and the control buttons are clearly visible and illuminated.

The flash gun supports TTL if you want to run the camera/flash on auto, but you can not change the stops or distance settings for the flash gun. Further you can not use the flash as a master flash, but it's possible to trigger the Metz 44 AF-1 off-camera as slave-flash via photocell.
