I use my camera mainly for pet photos or zoo photos etc and this lens is superb for it,

Unlike many FX zoom lenses which are quite big and heavy i think this lens is a perfect compromise to carry with you more often.

Comments about Nikon 28-300mm f3.5-5.6 G AF-S ED VR Lens:

I bought this for a trip to Australia in the hope I wouldn't have to hump several heavy lenses around in 35 degree heat. Sadly, it's just not very sharp, seemingly at any aperture or focal length. You HAVE to stop it down to f8 to get anything decent and even then it's decent rather than good. D800 and D600 both showed its short-comings despite using a monopod/tripod for everything I could. I knew it wouldn't be 70-200 sharp but even so, mine's just... wishy-washy. Maybe I had a duff one. Before you part with your cash, have a thorough look at some other reviews.

Comments about Nikon 28-300mm f3.5-5.6 G AF-S ED VR Lens:

For general use the 28-300 cover the full range of lenses, so lens change is mostly a thing of the past.

OK that over, there are focus issues some new cameras ie D800 fire the shutter at all times whether subject is in focus or not. Real **** setting you need to change this in the menu.

Point two camera needs to be tuned to the lens using the focus fine tune my camera needed +5 this was the same with all lenses 14-24, 24-70, 70-200, 28-300

Once this was done the lens was sharp and certainly good enough for most uses. Colour is very good so is contrast and both are on par with the best.

You also need to download from Nikon the latest distortion table as this gets rid of most distortion "on the fly" that is pincushion and barreling.

You cannot expect performance that is equal to the 24-70, but it is pretty close, forget the worries about the F3.5 ect the camera will compensate with higher ISO values.

Yes viewfinder is a little dark, but perfectly usable.

It is a fine lens for the traveler and general photography and will produce indistinguishable results from the best up to A4 +

You need to configure your camera to get the best out of the lens. Focus is a little slow, but much faster than the £1400+ 80-400 Nikon lens

If the camera is set to only fire shutter when in focus the camera is a little slower, but what's the point of a fast camera when shots are soft.

Honestly my first thought was "****", but once I spent time and sorted out the camera settings it is a mandatory great buy.

Nothing on the market can touch it for the price!!!!!!!

              Have fun

              John

Comments about Nikon 28-300mm f3.5-5.6 G AF-S ED VR Lens:

Recently bought this lens to go on the D3S.
Tried the lens out whilst on holiday in Alnwick, I must say that I was very surprised by how sharp the lens is at 28mm and at 300mm. The focusing is super quick. And a 300mm lens that will focus to 1m.
Used the lens for some landscape work in mixed lighting in the Cheviot Hills and the images have the wow factor.
I have also used this lens for a recent wildlife shoot and the images of the Kestral are great.
The lens is the right size for travel, perfect when out for a walk, or on a comissioned shoot, it is fast and sharp.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Nikon 28-300mm f3.5-5.6 G AF-S ED VR Lens:

I bought this with a Nikon D800 for a wildlife holiday in Brazil.

It was very easy to use and I got some good shots of Jaguars and birds.

I like the wide range of magnification and with the D800's pixels further magnification on the computer is possible ( some of those birds were a very long way away ! )

Everyone else was using massive primary lenses ( at the cost of a small car and out of my price range ! ) but I am pleased with my shots and know this zoom lens will be useful all the year round, not just on holiday

Comments about Nikon 28-300mm f3.5-5.6 G AF-S ED VR Lens:

I recently took this lens attached to a Nikon D700 to a show at the Imperial War Museum at Duxford. The obvious use of shooting the flying (telephoto) was accompanied by outdoor close-ups of the aircraft on the ground and indoor close-ups of the aircraft being restored (both wide angle). The VR meant that the indoor shots did not require flash. The image quality is excellent, sharp and vibrant. A Swiss army knife lens for FX format.
