The AF-S DX Micro Nikkor 40mm f2.8G is a true 1:1 macro lens for DX format DSLRs like the D90, D5100 and D7000. Incorporating the NIKKOR Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for quiet accurate focus operation, a large f2.8 aperture and a 16.3cm close focusing, this lens is ideal for shooting both intimate close-up details or general portraiture with flattering out of focus elements. When mounted on a DX-format SLR, the picture angle is equivalent to a focal length of about 60mm in 35mm format. More
January 2010 …it turns out that the humble macro lens doesn’t have to be reserved for occasions when you’re knee deep in swamp water and face to face with a frog, or on your belly in a meadow chasing a ladybird through the grass… Get some inspiration here...

great picture quality

Takes great pictures, not just close up.
great little lens
good for landscape and sunset
Extremely Sharp Focus
Impressive sharpness. Not too bad at macro, although suffers a little from blocking it's own light when you get too close to the subject. Has become my lens of choice now for normal day to day shots, as the clarity is exceptional (much better than the 35mm, 50mm or 18-55mm lenses).

Just buy it, you wont regret it !!
I had been thinking of going to a fixed focal length lens for a while and when I saw that Nikon had a 40mm micro for less than £200 my mind was made up ! I doubt that this lens will appeal to the serious macro photographer as you have to get to close to the subject to achieve true 1:1. It is however a fantastic lens to teach you the basics of macro without breaking the bank and it is perfect to use as standard lens. The optical quality is brilliant as you would expect from Nikon. The build quality is good for the money but not as good as more expensive macro lenses. The photo I have uploaded is of a pile of cheese crumbs ( left overs from xmas) shot with my D5100 at f32 1/30th using bounce flash from my SB-700 on camera with A4 paper acting as reflectors.I used the lens in manual focus as i've always found AF struggles to find focus when shooting macro, but this is probably a problem with my technique rather than camera or lens.Do yourself a favour, buy this lens !!

Perfect Flat-Field DX lens

About Me Professional
Don't think of this as a Macro lens – the short focal length means you are way too close. Are you fed-up with spending ages in Photoshop correcting the noticeable distortion of your Zoom lens? Well leave all that behind with this lens!It is perfect for any photography that needs a Flat Field lens:-• Architectural photography in un-confined spaces. (Who needs a Zoom when you can walk back or forward a few steps?)• Art reproduction• Product photography – especially box shaped objectsIt is also perfect for close-up Food photography where it is super-sharp and has great depth of field when used stopped down – or it produces creamy backgrounds when shot wide open at its bright 2.8 aperture.
