The AF-S DX Micro Nikkor 40mm f2.8G is a true 1:1 macro lens for DX format DSLRs like the D90, D5100 and D7000. Incorporating the NIKKOR Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for quiet accurate focus operation, a large f2.8 aperture and a 16.3cm close focusing, this lens is ideal for shooting both intimate close-up details or general portraiture with flattering out of focus elements. When mounted on a DX-format SLR, the picture angle is equivalent to a focal length of about 60mm in 35mm format. More
January 2010 …it turns out that the humble macro lens doesn’t have to be reserved for occasions when you’re knee deep in swamp water and face to face with a frog, or on your belly in a meadow chasing a ladybird through the grass… Get some inspiration here...

A mini marvel
from Rayleigh, Essex
About Me Hobbyist/Enthusiast
Comments about Nikon 40mm f2.8 G AF-S DX Micro Lens:
I wanted a small prime lens to go with my D7100. I thought about the 35mm 1.8 but in the end chose the 40mm 2.8 Micro because it has macro capability and I rather fancied being able to take some macro photographs occasionally. I mentioned my choice of lens (and WEX as supplier of choice) to my wife shortly before Christmas 2015 and much to my delight she purchased it for me from WEX as a Christmas present. I am delighted with it. It takes wonderful photographs that are sharp and have great colours and the bokeh is good. OK, it's not the best macro lens in the world but it suits my needs in this respect.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

A Good Buy
Good addition to my kit lens and telephoto. Good for portraits and walkabout lens but also useful to have micro facility. Superb value with no compromise on quality.
Excellent value for a quality lens
About Me Professional
An excellent lens for the cost. It gives vibrant colours & great bokeh,I prefer this to my 35mm f/1.8 dx as its got the macro onboard if needed. You have to get a little close for the macro 1:1 but for this price you can't complain.

A quality lens with great depth of field.
from Tyne & Wear
An excellent lens for closeup work. I use mine mainly for model photography where its F25 minimum aperture gives great depth of field.

Great little lens at an amazing price.
I use this lens for most things, landscapes/portrait and some macro work.I was drawn to it and put off by the price, thinking a lens this cheap wouldn't give good results let alone great ones. This is an amazing great value lens, you will not be disappointed with the results.

A Small Giant

I thought long and hard before purchasing this lens because of the fact that nearly all reviews dwell on the short focal length and the fact that you have to get very close to your subject in order to fill the frame. This can result in the subject being in the shadow which you create and can also cause insects to fly away when you disturb them.Whist these are valid points, the sun is not always shining (sadly )and flowers & many other small static subjects do not have wings ! Having used the lens on many occasions ,I should like to emphasise its outstanding resolution & colour reproduction ,together with its low weight & low price compared to its 105mm sibling. It also doubles up as a first-rate standard lens capable of crystal clear images for general use, including portraiture , with just a little cropping.
