The Nikon 50mm f1.8 G AF-S Lens boasts a new optical system that is designed to meet the requirements of today’s D-SLRs. It delivers stunning image quality and offers users an easy and affordable way to appreciate the effects of a fast aperture. The fast maximum aperture of f/1.8 makes the 50mm f1.8 G AF-S Lens an excellent choice for low-light situations or when shallow depth of field is required. You can single out subjects to produce portraits with smooth bokeh or shoot with available light and still capture striking, sharp images. The fast aperture also provides a bright viewfinder image, making it easier to compose your shots. The dedicated Silent Wave Motor (SWM) ensures discreet but accurate autofocus. The Nikon 50mm f1.8 G AF-S Lens is compatible with Nikon FX-format D-SLRs as well as offering a 75mm (equivalent) focal length when used with Nikon DX-format D-SLRs. More
Zurab Kiknadze, Product Manager Lenses, Accessories & Software, Nikon Europe says:
“The new 50mm is an ideal second lens for curious D-SLR enthusiasts wanting to venture beyond the kit lens and explore the creative possibilities that a fast aperture can offer, including effects such as blurred backgrounds in portraiture and low-light shooting.”
Brilliance In Any Light - Get astonishing low light results.
This lightweight standard lens is a great travel companion because you never know when a beautiful, sunny day will turn cloudy and rainy. With its fast f/1.8 aperture, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G will capture even low-light situations with stunning brilliance.
Beautiful Background Blur - Achieve more natural depth of field.
Whether you're shooting portraits, food or nature - indoors or outdoors - the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G renders a beautiful, natural background blur (Bokeh) at its wider aperture settings. And its 50mm focal length is perfect for creating natural perspective in your photographs.
Capture Every Detail - Shoot tack-sharp portraits every time.
Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior colour consistency and reduced flare, while the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G's Aspherical Lens Element (AS) virtually eliminates coma and other types of aberrations, even when shooting at the widest available aperture. Pair that with Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for fast, accurate and quiet autofocus, and you can be sure all of your portraits will be tack sharp.
A significant innovation in AF lens technology, Nikon's Silent Wave Motor uses ultrasonic (inaudible) vibrations—rather than a gear system—to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation.
Quick Switching from AF to MF
When fine manual focusing is needed, simply rotate the lens focus ring—M/A mode allows you to seamlessly override the AF system with virtually no time lag.
Effective Aberration Correction
Since the 1960s, aspherical lenses have been an important part of the NIKKOR lens family. Virtually eliminating coma and other types of aberration, every new addition to the line-up provides a new level of contrast, resolution and compact design.
Reduce Lens Flare and Ghosting
Nikon's Super Integrated Coating enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior colour consistency and reduced lens flare.
G lenses do not have an aperture ring on the lens and must be controlled using the command dial on the camera.
AF-Silent Wave Motor (AF-S)
AF-s is what Nikon calls their ultra fast Auto-Focusing lenses which utilise Nikons silent wave motor (~SWM). This system works by converting travelling waves into rotational energy to focus the optics the ultrasonic waves move in a spiral pattern inside the barrel with the motor positioned on top of the waves driving it from below.

About Me Semi Proffessional
Comments about Nikon 50mm f1.8 G AF-S Lens:
I shoot mainly sporting events, Cycling and Rugby. The results with cycling time trials have been impressive with very sharp images at low ISO and aperture at high speed exposure. The only draw back is positioning myself to suit the focal length I will like to invest in an 85mm f1.8.Its uses in rugby are limited but I have had some cracking shots on the try line and also inlineouts but it cannot replace my 70-300mm zoom.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Fantastic! really enjoy using it
About Me Hobbyist/Enthusiast
I bought this for product photography on a DX camera. I leave this lens on the camera all the time now in preference to the kit zoom just because the images are sharper and most of the 'zoom' I need can be done with a simple crop on the computer.
The 50mm f1.8 is brilliant value for money, light, pin sharp and inexpensive. Great for street photography, using the depth of field its very fast and extremely sharp. I use it for weddings where I am able to use its intuitive handling. It is plastic so needs to treated with care but it is very light and unobtrusive. All in all a great lens at a great price
Works really well in low light. Cracking lens for the price.
About Me Professional
A great value lens, it is plastic but with care should last. It is light with great image quality, easy to use and fast. Autofocus is very quiet and works well. All in all great value and very useful

I purchased this lens to go with my new D800 because I wanted a lighter lens than my 24-70mm lens which is bulky and heavy to carry around. I have tested the lens against my 24-70mm setting my old lens at 50mm focal length and I cannot see any difference except there was a tiny bit of blowout on the 50mm lens which when adjusted from the raw image in the raw converter gave no noticeable difference to the 24-70mm lens. I now take my camera everywhere I go. My old D3 and 24-70mm lens weighed a ton! However I will still keep my 24-70mm lens unless I decide to purchase another prime lens like the 20mm and do away with heavy glass altogether.

As good as previous 50 mm.
Love this lens, great for portraits
About Me Getting started, Professional
I love how great this is for portraits, the best thing is the wide aperture especially when photographing children as I don't usually have to use a flash with this and I get no squints. It's a small lens easy to fit in bag. I have no faults with this lens so far.
