The Nikon 50mm f1.8 G AF-S Lens boasts a new optical system that is designed to meet the requirements of today’s D-SLRs. It delivers stunning image quality and offers users an easy and affordable way to appreciate the effects of a fast aperture. The fast maximum aperture of f/1.8 makes the 50mm f1.8 G AF-S Lens an excellent choice for low-light situations or when shallow depth of field is required. You can single out subjects to produce portraits with smooth bokeh or shoot with available light and still capture striking, sharp images. The fast aperture also provides a bright viewfinder image, making it easier to compose your shots. The dedicated Silent Wave Motor (SWM) ensures discreet but accurate autofocus. The Nikon 50mm f1.8 G AF-S Lens is compatible with Nikon FX-format D-SLRs as well as offering a 75mm (equivalent) focal length when used with Nikon DX-format D-SLRs. More
Zurab Kiknadze, Product Manager Lenses, Accessories & Software, Nikon Europe says:
“The new 50mm is an ideal second lens for curious D-SLR enthusiasts wanting to venture beyond the kit lens and explore the creative possibilities that a fast aperture can offer, including effects such as blurred backgrounds in portraiture and low-light shooting.”
Brilliance In Any Light - Get astonishing low light results.
This lightweight standard lens is a great travel companion because you never know when a beautiful, sunny day will turn cloudy and rainy. With its fast f/1.8 aperture, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G will capture even low-light situations with stunning brilliance.
Beautiful Background Blur - Achieve more natural depth of field.
Whether you're shooting portraits, food or nature - indoors or outdoors - the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G renders a beautiful, natural background blur (Bokeh) at its wider aperture settings. And its 50mm focal length is perfect for creating natural perspective in your photographs.
Capture Every Detail - Shoot tack-sharp portraits every time.
Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior colour consistency and reduced flare, while the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G's Aspherical Lens Element (AS) virtually eliminates coma and other types of aberrations, even when shooting at the widest available aperture. Pair that with Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for fast, accurate and quiet autofocus, and you can be sure all of your portraits will be tack sharp.
A significant innovation in AF lens technology, Nikon's Silent Wave Motor uses ultrasonic (inaudible) vibrations—rather than a gear system—to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation.
Quick Switching from AF to MF
When fine manual focusing is needed, simply rotate the lens focus ring—M/A mode allows you to seamlessly override the AF system with virtually no time lag.
Effective Aberration Correction
Since the 1960s, aspherical lenses have been an important part of the NIKKOR lens family. Virtually eliminating coma and other types of aberration, every new addition to the line-up provides a new level of contrast, resolution and compact design.
Reduce Lens Flare and Ghosting
Nikon's Super Integrated Coating enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior colour consistency and reduced lens flare.
G lenses do not have an aperture ring on the lens and must be controlled using the command dial on the camera.
AF-Silent Wave Motor (AF-S)
AF-s is what Nikon calls their ultra fast Auto-Focusing lenses which utilise Nikons silent wave motor (~SWM). This system works by converting travelling waves into rotational energy to focus the optics the ultrasonic waves move in a spiral pattern inside the barrel with the motor positioned on top of the waves driving it from below.

A fantastic lens!
I bought this lens initially as a portrait lens for my APS-C camera, to mimic the 85mm on full frame. It is a wonderful lens to shoot with, and the photos are great. Sharpness is very good, even wide open. Build quality, although plastic, is very good. It feels tough. I now use this lens for everything now, and when I go full frame, I won't hesitate to buy the other lenses in this 1.8 series.

A Fantastic Little Lens
I purchased this lens to use on my APS-C Nikon D80 as a 75mm portrait lens, and then as a 50mm when I can finally afford to go full frame.Firstly, yes, it is plastic, but the build quality is excellent. Secondly, it is sharp, even wide open. I haven't done an extreme test of this lens, but after a day of taking people photos, I'm very satisfied with the output. I had fewer "bad" shots, and those that were, were because of my mistakes. A great, and very affordable lens!

Took this lens away the other weekend, and it was superb for taking out and about. It is perfect for using whisky out and about and in lowlight situations
Great product from a great camera retailer.
Brilliant so far
Ordered this on Monday and it arrivd today! Brilliant service. Havent had a chance to try the lens out properly yet, but so far it seems to handle low light conditions very well; photographing a mostly black Border Collie in a dark hallway has given it no trouble. It will be interesting so see how it handles in other situations, but I cant foresee any major issues
