The Nikon 50mm f1.8 G AF-S Lens boasts a new optical system that is designed to meet the requirements of today’s D-SLRs. It delivers stunning image quality and offers users an easy and affordable way to appreciate the effects of a fast aperture. The fast maximum aperture of f/1.8 makes the 50mm f1.8 G AF-S Lens an excellent choice for low-light situations or when shallow depth of field is required. You can single out subjects to produce portraits with smooth bokeh or shoot with available light and still capture striking, sharp images. The fast aperture also provides a bright viewfinder image, making it easier to compose your shots. The dedicated Silent Wave Motor (SWM) ensures discreet but accurate autofocus. The Nikon 50mm f1.8 G AF-S Lens is compatible with Nikon FX-format D-SLRs as well as offering a 75mm (equivalent) focal length when used with Nikon DX-format D-SLRs. More
Zurab Kiknadze, Product Manager Lenses, Accessories & Software, Nikon Europe says:
“The new 50mm is an ideal second lens for curious D-SLR enthusiasts wanting to venture beyond the kit lens and explore the creative possibilities that a fast aperture can offer, including effects such as blurred backgrounds in portraiture and low-light shooting.”
Brilliance In Any Light - Get astonishing low light results.
This lightweight standard lens is a great travel companion because you never know when a beautiful, sunny day will turn cloudy and rainy. With its fast f/1.8 aperture, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G will capture even low-light situations with stunning brilliance.
Beautiful Background Blur - Achieve more natural depth of field.
Whether you're shooting portraits, food or nature - indoors or outdoors - the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G renders a beautiful, natural background blur (Bokeh) at its wider aperture settings. And its 50mm focal length is perfect for creating natural perspective in your photographs.
Capture Every Detail - Shoot tack-sharp portraits every time.
Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior colour consistency and reduced flare, while the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G's Aspherical Lens Element (AS) virtually eliminates coma and other types of aberrations, even when shooting at the widest available aperture. Pair that with Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for fast, accurate and quiet autofocus, and you can be sure all of your portraits will be tack sharp.
A significant innovation in AF lens technology, Nikon's Silent Wave Motor uses ultrasonic (inaudible) vibrations—rather than a gear system—to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation.
Quick Switching from AF to MF
When fine manual focusing is needed, simply rotate the lens focus ring—M/A mode allows you to seamlessly override the AF system with virtually no time lag.
Effective Aberration Correction
Since the 1960s, aspherical lenses have been an important part of the NIKKOR lens family. Virtually eliminating coma and other types of aberration, every new addition to the line-up provides a new level of contrast, resolution and compact design.
Reduce Lens Flare and Ghosting
Nikon's Super Integrated Coating enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior colour consistency and reduced lens flare.
G lenses do not have an aperture ring on the lens and must be controlled using the command dial on the camera.
AF-Silent Wave Motor (AF-S)
AF-s is what Nikon calls their ultra fast Auto-Focusing lenses which utilise Nikons silent wave motor (~SWM). This system works by converting travelling waves into rotational energy to focus the optics the ultrasonic waves move in a spiral pattern inside the barrel with the motor positioned on top of the waves driving it from below.

About Me Ex-professional
This 50mm f1.8 and the 40mm AF-S DX f2.8 are two of the best lenses Nikon has ever made. Both at incredibly low prices for what you get. This 50mm lens is good for both FX (full frame -50mm) and DX (cropped frame -75mm equivalent) cameras, so even if you decide to upgrage to full frame you will not need to change it.Compare this lens to the cost of the 50mm f1.4 version and it's a no brainer. I just had to have one.
I haven't had a great deal of time to use it, but am very pleased with the results, so far.

About Me Professional
Bought to replace an old manual 50mm 1.8, this is my go-to lens whenever I want to show my subject up close with a blurred background. Whether it is landscape detail shots, internal wedding shots or isolated portraits, this lens delivers a superb result. If you don't have one in your kit bag, buy one, you won't regret it. Fast and accurate focusing are two of its strongest suites in my opinion, plus crisp results
I bought this lens as a convenience as i also have the 24-70 f2.8 which is far too big to take everywhere.I debated for a while over this or the f1.4 version, both are the same size and weight, same filter sizes, there just a 2/3 stop difference for nearly double the price. Im so glad i bought the f1.8, its cheap, lightweight and extremely sharp, infact most reviews i have read rate it better than the f1.4. AF is fast but sometime lagging behind the 24-70 hence the 4/5 stars, but nothing to really complain about im just being pickyFor me this is a fabulous little lens i can stick on camera and not worry about breaking it, carrying around, weight and image quality. images are fantastic at all apertures and the colours are great too. definitely dont regret buying this over its more expensive sister lens the f1.4.
Exceptional in low light conditions and is the perfect for shooting portraits of people and pets

It's a long time since my film days that I've had a 50mm lens! I bought this to have availability to a lightweight wide aperture lens. One top rated reviewer (no not KR) claims the Nikon 50mm f/1.8G still outperforms the Nikon 50mm f/1.4G on a high resolution sensor. It offers great performance wide open throughout the frame and once stopped down to f/2.8, produces very impressive results that the bigger f/1.4G cannot match. Well, I wanted it for my D800 and it certainly rocks on that camera and on my D7000 too. This lens was missing from my bag for too long, anyway that's rectified now. Buy one and you won't regret it.
