The Nikon 50mm f1.8 G AF-S Lens boasts a new optical system that is designed to meet the requirements of today’s D-SLRs. It delivers stunning image quality and offers users an easy and affordable way to appreciate the effects of a fast aperture. The fast maximum aperture of f/1.8 makes the 50mm f1.8 G AF-S Lens an excellent choice for low-light situations or when shallow depth of field is required. You can single out subjects to produce portraits with smooth bokeh or shoot with available light and still capture striking, sharp images. The fast aperture also provides a bright viewfinder image, making it easier to compose your shots. The dedicated Silent Wave Motor (SWM) ensures discreet but accurate autofocus. The Nikon 50mm f1.8 G AF-S Lens is compatible with Nikon FX-format D-SLRs as well as offering a 75mm (equivalent) focal length when used with Nikon DX-format D-SLRs.  More

Nikon 50mm f1.8 G AF-S Lens Further Details

Nikon 50mm f1.8 G AF-S Lens main features

Zurab Kiknadze, Product Manager Lenses, Accessories & Software, Nikon Europe says:
“The new 50mm is an ideal second lens for curious D-SLR enthusiasts wanting to venture beyond the kit lens and explore the creative possibilities that a fast aperture can offer, including effects such as blurred backgrounds in portraiture and low-light shooting.”

Brilliance In Any Light - Get astonishing low light results.
This lightweight standard lens is a great travel companion because you never know when a beautiful, sunny day will turn cloudy and rainy. With its fast f/1.8 aperture, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G will capture even low-light situations with stunning brilliance.

Beautiful Background Blur - Achieve more natural depth of field.
Whether you're shooting portraits, food or nature - indoors or outdoors - the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G renders a beautiful, natural background blur (Bokeh) at its wider aperture settings. And its 50mm focal length is perfect for creating natural perspective in your photographs.

Capture Every Detail - Shoot tack-sharp portraits every time.
Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior colour consistency and reduced flare, while the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G's Aspherical Lens Element (AS) virtually eliminates coma and other types of aberrations, even when shooting at the widest available aperture. Pair that with Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for fast, accurate and quiet autofocus, and you can be sure all of your portraits will be tack sharp.

Quiet Autofocus
A significant innovation in AF lens technology, Nikon's Silent Wave Motor uses ultrasonic (inaudible) vibrations—rather than a gear system—to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation.

Quick Switching from AF to MF
When fine manual focusing is needed, simply rotate the lens focus ring—M/A mode allows you to seamlessly override the AF system with virtually no time lag.

Effective Aberration Correction
Since the 1960s, aspherical lenses have been an important part of the NIKKOR lens family. Virtually eliminating coma and other types of aberration, every new addition to the line-up provides a new level of contrast, resolution and compact design.

Reduce Lens Flare and Ghosting
Nikon's Super Integrated Coating enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior colour consistency and reduced lens flare.

Technical terms

G
G lenses do not have an aperture ring on the lens and must be controlled using the command dial on the camera.

AF-Silent Wave Motor (AF-S)
AF-s is what Nikon calls their ultra fast Auto-Focusing lenses which utilise Nikons silent wave motor (~SWM). This system works by converting travelling waves into rotational energy to focus the optics the ultrasonic waves move in a spiral pattern inside the barrel with the motor positioned on top of the waves driving it from below.

      One needs a "walkabout" lens.
      This is it.
Fits in your pocket, or in the corner of your camera bag, so it's always there when you need it.
The difference between f1.8 and f1.4 models may be a worry to some, but in actual use, lenses are usually stopped down a bit, so why spend more?
      Don't forget your protective filter!

This is now the main lens on my Nikon D5000.It has changed the way I take pics I now get more close up and selective with subjects. From an 18 - 270mm it is a whole different way of looking at things and the results are terrific. The price [...] first class too.

It may be 'Made in China', but the quality of this lens is excellent from f4 to f16, with razor-like sharpness, good contrast and little chromatic abberations. It is a bit soft when wider than f4, and pretty poor at f1.8, but the bokeh (background blur) is most pleasant. I acquired this lens to make walkabout much easier on my shoulder (on a D3s), and I've really enjoyed using it. I don't really need AF, but the silent-wave motor is very quiet and accurate when I've deployed it. It's the sort of 'easy to fit in your bag' lens that you'll find you'll use more than you thought.

Bought this recently and took it away to Copenhagen with my D700. It's a great lens quick and silent and unobtrusive.

Great for travel and general walk around lens and of course portraits great bokeh too.

This is a great addition to my prime lenses along with the 35mm f2 and 85mm f1.8

          light and crystal clear

          By peter the pump

          from Bucks

Its 30 years since I last used a prime lens, I had forgotten how nice they are to use and what brilliant clear sharp results you got. Having persuaded both my sons to buy a prime lens and seen their delight in using them ( they have young children ) I decided to jump when Nikon introduced their new AFS lens at a reasonable price . I really could not justify buying the heavy f1.4 and was more than happy with an f1.8 lens.
Since I bought it three weeks ago it has hardly been off my D7000. It is light, focus is really fast and quiet and the results are fabulous with sharp images with a lovely level of contrast, good colour, and the out of focus areas are very pleasing. I had however forgotten how accurate you have to be with framing the image when shooting wide open to ensure the focus point is where it ought to be!
It really is a delight to use, so stop dawdling and treat yourself.
