The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8G ED VR II lens offers re-designed optics for exceptional image quality and increased Vibration Reduction capability. The VRII technology enables photographers to shoot at shutter speeds up to four stops slower than would otherwise be possible (as determined by Nikon performance tests). The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8G ED VR II lens can be used in one of two modes: Normal for everyday shooting and Active, which minimises the vibration experienced when shooting aircraft for example. Both the Normal and the Active modes offer a stable viewfinder image, essential for making focus point acquisition and framing far more comfortable and precise.  More

Nikon 70-200mm AF-S Nikkor f2.8G ED VR II Lens Further Details

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8G ED VR II Lens

The new lens delivers corner to corner quality on FX cameras and the Nikon exclusive anti-reflection Nano Crystal coat, together with seven ED glass elements minimises internal reflections and aberrations, ultimately producing rich, high contrast images, no matter what lighting conditions you are shooting in.

There are three focus modes on the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8G ED VR II Lens; A/M; M/A and M. The new A/M switch enables autofocus priority even if the focus ring is being handled during shooting.

The newly designed optics of the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8G ED VR II lens allow shorter dimensions than the current version and don't compromise on the necessary durability. This lens is housed in a tough magnesium body and is extensively sealed to withstand the affects of dust, dirt and moisture.

Comments about Nikon 70-200mm AF-S Nikkor f2.8G ED VR II Lens:

Some people say this lens is heavy, if it was light the same people would complain that it looks and feels cheap!! The lens is what you expect, a professional build and quality lens. This lens takes no prisoners, it does what it says. I might not use this lens every day, but when I do use it amerture photographers run crying as they are scared, it seperates the men from the boys, FACT. I would recommend this lens, it is expensive, but you have one of the best lenses ever made. Tell your mates how much it cost, but don't tell the wife!!

Comments about Nikon 70-200mm AF-S Nikkor f2.8G ED VR II Lens:

I love this lens. It is well worth the money if you are serious about image quality. It is really heavy, which is a problem for me on occasions as I travel quite a lot on planes and it contributes a fair bit towards carry on baggage weight allowances! But I am always glad I lugged it about as soon as I start shooting. Razor sharp, quick to focus, lovely bokeh, great in low light - just lovely.

Comments about Nikon 70-200mm AF-S Nikkor f2.8G ED VR II Lens:

I can't really add anything further to what has already been said about this lens, as it is a great lens.

However, it is not without it's issues. The first time I used it, in good lighting conditions, you couldn't fault the lens. Focus was spot on and quick. Saturation and contrast was better than any lens I have seen and it was sharp. The bokeh was great, soft and mellow and at f4 and 5.6, I was in heaven! All in all, what you would expect from probably the world's best lens.

I then used it it much more difficult light, about 30 minutes before sunset. Again the quality of image was outstanding, but it was incredibly prone to flare. Now I was trying to test it out, and get some great pictures of wildlife at sunset. But I really struggled when shooting into the light. I really had to move position so that I almost wasn't shooting into the light... Somewhat defeating the point! I suspect this is the fault of the lens hood, which is not good and not what you expect from a lens of this type, as I hope the ED and Nano coating was working....

As with any lens, you need to know it's limitations and how best to use to. Apart from that one issue, the lens is great as I said, and I am very pleased I bought it. I am looking forward to testing it out in difficult light situations again, as it was a pleasure to use!

Comments about Nikon 70-200mm AF-S Nikkor f2.8G ED VR II Lens:

I upgraded from a Nikon D300s which I had a 18-200mm DX lens with. Obviously when I went to the D700 the DX lens was obsolete so looking to replace it was easy. The 70-200 hit all the right notes and does exactly what it says on the tin.[...] great item.

Comments about Nikon 70-200mm AF-S Nikkor f2.8G ED VR II Lens:

I've tried a lot of Nikon's professional lenses and there is no doubt that for me this is actually the best of them. It's as simple as that, you don't need to hear anything else but if you want even more gushing details, read on...

I hesitated for a long time in buying this because of my experiences with older lenses such as the Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-D which I thought was pretty average and was incredibly soft at 200mm. Let me tell you now - the performance of the 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII is a country mile ahead of incarnations like that.

It's incredibly sharp through the whole zoom range at f/2.8. And I am picky, very picky. If you own the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 then I'm telling you now, it is a LOT better than even a lens like that, in fact it's better than any prime I've shot with too in that range, including the 85mm f/1.4G.

As to the VR, the general rule is that your shutter speed should be 1.5 times your focal length to ensure a sharp image, so at 200mm you should be aiming for at least 1/300th of a second or quicker. With the lastest VR technology built into this lens I could shoot sharp images safely at that focal length (with a steady hand) at 1/30th - that's one hell of a performance. It means that lower light and lower ISO is of course all the more possible though as a rule I would still encourage anyone to shoot with a much higher shutter for safety. All the same, it is the best VR performance I've seen on ANY lens, let alone Nikon.

There's nothing more to be said really, it's probably Nikon's best lens (and they know it) and anything following it would have to be absolutely spectacular to trump this kind of performance.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

200mm and f/2.8 - this is the weak focal length ;)
