The aperture range makes this such a flexible lens. I have shot in a studio without using the flash and got good results. Bokeh is superb.

Image quality from this lens is excellent throughout. At 1.4 it can be a little soft but that's to be expected. Skin tones are fantastic and very flattering due to the slightly warm tint it produces. The AF is very accurate and consistent although not particularly fast. The bokeh from this lens is simply beautiful making it an ideal portrait lens. It is very expensive but if you shoot plenty of portraits then this lens is worth every penny.

an awesome update to an already great lens from Nikon, tack sharp wide open with wonderfull bokeh to out of focus areas. Stopping down just increases depth of field. I love the new build quality of modern Nikkor lenses, the plastic is very high grade and warmer to the touch than the old metal lenses and it absorbs impacts better than metal aswell and finally they have got rid of that really cheap plastic feeling aperture ring.

expensive, yes, but definately worth it if you need it.

This lens represents a well overdue upgrade of Nikon's old established 85mm F1.4Although sharpness is very similar to the old model the new model feels a different beast altogether.The glass imparts a gentle warmth to portraits making it perfect for skin tones.Nikon's AF mechanism is silky smooth and near silent in use and as a unit balances very well with the current D series of Nikon bodies.I would throughly recommend this lens although the best part of [$] does seem rather a lot to pay for a prime fixed focal length.The other negative aspect would be the ongoing use of plastics instead of alloy in high grade professional lenses.But all in all a fine lens and when stopped down to F5.6 delivers stunning sharpness as you would expect.A joy of an extravagance to own...
