The Nikon 85mm f1.8 is a fast aperture medium-telephoto prime FX lens. Nikon has re-designed the optical system that meets the requirements of today’s DSLR and is capable of taking variety of images with superb clarity and sharpness. The Silent Wave Motor ensures discreet but accurate autofocus. The large aperture allows you to capture images that give a beautifully blurred background. When mounted on a DX-format DSLR, this 85mm prime delivers an apparent focal length of approximately 128mm.

Superb for the price
I bought this lens for studio portrait work. I have a number of high quality Nikkor lens' and this is one of the first Chinese made cheaper end I have bought. However, the image quality is superb and so far I am glad I did not fork out for its big expensive brother. It is a top quality lens and I am very happy with it.
Superb portrait lens
About Me Professional
I bought this to develop my portraiture - previously using the 24 - 70mm 2.8 - and am extremely pleased. I wish I had gone to prime lenses initially instead of the 24 - 70 (which is impressive) but the lightweight speedy nature of the 85mm along with its beautiful image quality has me leaving this on my D800 almost permanently. I also use a 50mm 1.8 which I'd review in the same way.Again, my caveat of not being a technical expert.
Light and fantastic
I bought it to replace my 70-200 for couple portraits at weddings and it's superb. It weighs next to nothing.. made from plastic.. and allows me to blow the backgrounds out while keeping the details pin sharp. I can carry it around all day and not notice it. No VR, though as it's light and stubby, I can keep my elbows close and reduce the chances of blur by motion. I've not had any on the job focus issues though when subjecting it to a little testing it is noticeably slower to focus than the x5 expensive 70-200.. no real world worries yet, aces all the way. It's made of plastic so, as with any lens, take care.Final word: I'd read the DXO stats & test, joint 2nd best Nikon lens and way sharp. In practice it's even sharper than I anticipated combined with the superb bokeh it's my preferred portrait lens over my awesome 70-200 2.8.

Good lens clear pictures
By Wendy B
I bought this lens to get close ups of my grandchildren. Without being in their face, I wasn't disappointed.I found this lens particularly good on a recent weekend to the Peak District we were able to get good clear close ups of the wildlife which visited our cabin, squirrels would sit nibbling bits which we had left out for them and this lens captured them without scaring them off, although you are unable to zoom in and out I found it great for getting those close ups whilst being discreet, great lens love it.
A fine lens. It does take some time to get used to and get the best out of it.
Very impressive picture quality on my D600 - lovely smooth and pin sharp images. So far used for portraits and scenic shots and the results have been very impressive - just need to improve my photography now to match!Focusing is a slightly slow if I am picky but otherwise a great buy for the money.

I bought this lens to photograph mountain bike racing as I was finding zooms too slow focusing and the faster lens speed means I can also use a faster shooter speed without ramping up ISO.The AF is phenomenally good on my Nikon 300S camera and this lens has barely been off the camera. A great focal length using a DX format for cycling and image quality is superb.
very good lens
About Me Getting started
This is a very well made lens. The auto focus is great and the pictures it produces with my d800 are very good under all conditions.

Confusion Ended !!!
Ok like most of you it's been the great debate of do I buy a new 1.8G or a used 1.4D lens. Well it's all over now, I've taken the plunge and brought the 1.8G. It quite simply amazing, sharp, great colours, light weight and now my new best friend, I also have a few current £1000 plus 2.8 lenses so hopefully that puts a little perspective on prior statement. Yes it's plastic but unless you drop it from a great height then you'll be just fine, believe me coupled with a full frame D3s this is heaven on the back and you'll think plastic is the best invention since sliced bread again. With regards to Bokeh it's great and to spend nearly another grand for just that little bit more is just madness !!! This lens is great for everyone, beginners through to pro's and I have highly recommended it to my students over the past months. If your thinking about it don't just buy it !! If you've got more money than sense and want to earn bragging rights then you'll be buying the 1.4G no offense but I know you exist ;o)
