The Nikon 85mm f1.8 is a fast aperture medium-telephoto prime FX lens. Nikon has re-designed the optical system that meets the requirements of today’s DSLR and is capable of taking variety of images with superb clarity and sharpness. The Silent Wave Motor ensures discreet but accurate autofocus. The large aperture allows you to capture images that give a beautifully blurred background. When mounted on a DX-format DSLR, this 85mm prime delivers an apparent focal length of approximately 128mm.

It's early days and I'm just getting used to this lens but my first impressions are that it produces high quality pictures, is compact and light. Construction wise, it doesn't seem quite as rugged as my other lenses but this might be in part because it feels so light. At this price I would definitely recommend this lens.

Superb quality at any price
A really great low-light lens at any price. Super clear for portraits and easy to carry and operate. Can't recommend it highly enough. Delighted.

Fantastic image quality with this lense. Brilliant for portrait images with a good aperture range. I was after an 85mm lense for my DF, but gave up trying to get a pre Ai bargain from a certain well known auction site. In desperation I bought this lense and now in hind site glad that I did. Still looking for a pre Ai lense but for now I really like this lense.
Great Lens and super sharp

Awesome lens for the price. Focus can be a little slow but faster than the Nikon 50mm 1.4. Needed to auto fine tune as apparently there can be issues with back/front focusing which I had with my sample. Once checked and set focus is accurate and the lens is super sharp. My new favourite lens.

A fabulous lens for portraits.

I did a lot of reading reviews of this lens. I wanted a good prime, more telephoto than the 50mm I used. This has been a treat. Fabulous pictures and small enough not to draw attention to the camera in public.

Great portrait lens
By Keith 66
I've used this lens for formal portraits with studio lights and informal family portraits at the beach and it always delivers. Fantastically sharp images with a lovely soft background. I took the usual step of calibrating the lens to my camera, and the difference was astounding. I'm sure Nikkor quality control is great but all lenses benefit from adjustment calibration in my opinion. I decided not to go for the f1.4 85mm because of price and weight but also because I watched many YouTube reviews which convinced me that only a pro would need the wider aperture. If you're not a pro, but you're serious about portraits - get this lens!

This is a great lens, so far all of Nikon's f/1.8G lenses have been fantastic and are out performing their f/1.4G range. Unless you absolutely need that tiny bit extra going from f/1.8 to f/1.4, or you feel the slightly smoother bokeh is what you want, then paying the extra £800 for the f1.4 is madness. Some have complained about the f1.8Gs being flimsy but I don't think they are, it's a pleasure to use on my D3 compared to the 70-200mm f/2.8G VRII I used to own.I'm looking forward to Nikon bringing out a 24mm and 135mm f1.8G or f2G to add to the range.

Excellent sharp lightweight portrait lens which does not cost the earth. I use it on my D800E with unbelievable results. Doesn't suffer from its plastic construction.
