The Nikon 85mm f1.8 is a fast aperture medium-telephoto prime FX lens. Nikon has re-designed the optical system that meets the requirements of today’s DSLR and is capable of taking variety of images with superb clarity and sharpness. The Silent Wave Motor ensures discreet but accurate autofocus. The large aperture allows you to capture images that give a beautifully blurred background. When mounted on a DX-format DSLR, this 85mm prime delivers an apparent focal length of approximately 128mm.

        Comments about Nikon 85mm f1.8 G AF-S Lens:

An excellent portrait lens, whether formal, studio style portraits or informal shots of children or pets around the house and garden.

This lens is very sharp even wide open. The only downside is a degree of colour fringing in high contrast situations when wide open, but this is easily corrected in post processing and is unlikely to be a problem in normal use.

Substantial improvement on previous Nikon 85mm f1.8D.

Really sharp wide open with great contrast and colour control.

Perfect for portraiture to isolate subjects from background yet light and easy to manage.

                Comments about Nikon 85mm f1.8 G AF-S Lens:

This is a very lightweight, but reassuringly well-made lens, perfect size and balance to use one-handed, especially with my D7000.
I shoot singers and bands in pubs, usually without flash, to newspaper and promotional standard, plus gigs and festivals. I often use a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8, which is great, does the job but is bulky and heavy and obtrusive in confined areas. And, often it's not fast enough. Nobody makes a 70-200mm f1.8 and even if they did, I wouldn't be able to afford it!

I was going to buy a secondhand 85mm f1.8 D, but they're still popular and command high prices. I'd heard too, that these weren't pin-sharp wide open. So, for a few pounds more, got the latest Nikon lens, with its instant and silent autofocus and is dust-sealed. It's all high grade plastics except for the mount and the actual glass lens elements, which will put off the old school, but makes the lens supremely light, yet strong. Being a 'G' series, there's no aperture ring.

Wide open, when focus is spot-on, it's very sharp - people in portraits shot at f1.8 complain that it's cruel; a professional portrait photographer told me that herself when she was the subject! The nice, smooth bokeh is good at venues when there's lots of distracting background details, too. You also get a decent lens hood that doesn't feel it's going to fall off, a Nikon weakness at times.

Those who have the money will always want the f1.4G, but that's three times the price, is much bulkier and you only gain half a stop.

Downside - yes, I wanted to use a 1.4x teleconverter with it - and you can't - the rear lens element is flush with the rear flange making this physically impossible. And, for me, the 67mm filter size is bigger than the old 'D' f1.8 and I don't have any other 67mm fit lenses (but a 62mm and two 72mm's!) The lens also only comes with a rather stingy drawstring pouch.

So, a great, light lens that's fast become essential kit.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

After much hesitation and deliberation, decided to get this len. [...]for a no flash indoor sport shoot. Performance was exceptional, silent focus which locks on quickly and extremely sharp.Ok! bokeh not as creamy as it's sibling the 85mm f1.4G but at this price and what I am looking for in this len, it is perfect!.Yet another exceptional len for low light performance.
