I am very happy with this lens. I don't have that much experience of macro, but it seems to do what I bought it for very well. I get sharp images right down to 1:1. The working distance is not too close, so hand held is possible, though for real close up a tripod is highly desirable. The lens also works well for landscape and I have used it for portraits as well.[...]

You don't hear much about the 85mm DX Micro, which is a real shame. The optics are superb and this is a lovely small and lightweight macro lens for Nikon DX format cameras. What I really like about this lens is its relatively long working distance, which allows you to take pictures of bugs and insects without having to have the end of the lens as close to the subject as you would need to with some other macro lenses of a similar focal length.

Although the primary use of this lens is macro photography, it makes a great portrait lens and with VR it's a fine general use short telephoto too. Highly recommended
