Incredible low-light photography
The completely redesigned 12.1 effective megapixel image sensor has a large pixel pitch with a modified inner structure that enables the Nikon D3s digital SLR to capture images under light conditions that previously have been near impossible. Ideal for news and sports photographers, the ISO range of 200-12,800 (seven stop) enables image and movie capture in low ambient light conditions. In addition, the Nikon D3s has three additional ISO boost levels, right up to Hi-3 - an ISO equivalent of an eye-popping 102,400.

FX format HD movies
Tipping its hat to the latest trend for movie capture on digital SLRs, the Nikon D3s utilises its large FX-format sensor and exploits the creative depth-of-field effects. Movies can be captured at 720p / 24fps in motion JPEG with stereo sound using the input jack. The file format enables a 'Save Selected' function, a unique frame option that allows the user to shoot video safe in the knowledge that still images of a key moment can be transmitted as well.

Image sensor cleaning
Based on feedback from professional photographers, Nikon have introduced an image sensor cleaning function that generates four different frequencies of vibration to reduce the impact of static dust collection on the optical low-pass filter of the image sensor. The 100% viewfinder coverage is not affected by this feature.

Flexible cropping meets awesome autofocus
The Nikon D3s digital SLR offers three options for cropping, each one masked automatically in the viewfinder. Choose from 5:4 (30x24); 1.2x (30x20); and DX (24x16). These cropping options have been designed to offer a practical combination of lens magnification & slightly reduced file size. The Nikon D3s also includes the impressive high-density 51-point Multi-CAM3500 FX system with 15- highly sensitive cross points. The Nikon D3s contrast detection AF system has been tuned to provide autofocus support during movie capture and Live View.

Quiet Shutter Mode
The Nikon D3s digital SLR features a Quiet Shutter release mode that enables the photographer to mitigate the sound of the mirror return, a useful feature for wildlife photographers in particular. This feature was also introduced as a result of feedback from users of the Nikon D3.

A view from Nikon
Robert Cristina, Manager, Professional Products for Nikon Europe, comments: “The D3S rewrites the rules for extreme low light photography, enabling photographers to take control of ambient light. Professionals from all over the world have contributed to making the best even better.”

Comments about Nikon D3s Digital SLR Camera Body:

Get the creative juices flowing with this storming piece of kit from the guys who know what they are doing. Nikon wait watch assimilate info and then come up with a world beating camera. This is such a massive leap on from the D2x it is unbelievable, the low light capabilities defy the laws of physics. She handles like a Ferrari okay not that I have been in a Ferrari but you get the general idea. All the buttons are exactly where you need them and become so intuitive and second nature. Menu is easy to navigate picture review crisp and clear image quality and sharpness superb and the speed...back to that Ferrari. She is really the Aston Martin of Cameras. Thanks Nikon...how you will top this puppy I can only imagine but knowing Nikon.. they will

It is what you think it is...

Comments about Nikon D3s Digital SLR Camera Body:

This is more than just a small bump up from the D3 and the D700 - it really is a tangible difference in low light and responsiveness capabilities. Even if you don't notice it at first, going back to the D700 just makes it seem slow, less comfortable to hold and just generally not as sharp. People will moan that it's 'only' 12mp, but for 99% of people, if you're using it right, that is enough - you can print pretty darn big with that.

I do agree with the image review zoom thing though below, that is one little thing that isn't as good as on the D700, and hopefully they'll allow you to change it in some updated firmware.

Comments about Nikon D3s Digital SLR Camera Body:

I bought the D3S to use alongside my D300 photographing horse shows, such as showjumping, the ISO capabilities should make a big difference to indoor shows where lighting is generally poor.

I had my first outing with the camera yesterday & it is really quite incredible. Used with a Sigma 120-300 the detail & clarity in the photos are stunning. The autofocus is excellent as is the viewfinder & coming from a D300 it's so similar in its features & menus that I did not have any problems switching between the 2. I have only ramped up the ISO at home for a few test shots but it does look every bit as impressive as all the reviews say.

However, the camera is not perfect in my eyes &I do have a couple of minor gripes.
Firstly, the zoom feature in playback mode is disapointing. I love the D300's (+D700) 1 button for zoom in, 1 button for zoom out, plus you can move around the image very quickly. But the D3S seems to have reverted to the hold down the chequerboard button & rotate the command dial to zoom. This is the same as my old D50 & to be honest it seems almost as slow. This is a feature that I use heavily during a show so I am a bit saddened that this has happened on a camera so expensive.
The second point is to do with the dual memory card slots. While this is a very welcome addition for me, I was hoping to be able to record movies onto 1 card & photos onto another but this is not possible. I will have to settle for the 3 options you can choose from.

I'm sure I will get used to these features on what is an otherwise outstanding camera, I just thought it might be useful to mention as it's not the sort of thing you normally read about!

Comments about Nikon D3s Digital SLR Camera Body:

Shooting weddings without flash in a dimly lit church wont be the same if you own a D3S, the lack of grain at high ISO is amazing! Shooting this week at 12,000 ISO I had a 320 shutter at F2.8 the picture quality was still very good. I wouldn't normally go this far but it just shows what it can do.

The camera is easy to use if you have worked with other Nikon products before, buttons are (mostly) well laid out and the menus easy to use.

Comments about Nikon D3s Digital SLR Camera Body:

I recently switched systems to Nikon & am amazed by the IQ & ISO performance of this camera.
Pretty straightforward to use unless you want to get into custom settings - which themselves aren't that difficult to set up if you need them, just read the manual, which is simple & helpful.
Not as heavy as I thought it would be & I don't have the strongest arms.
Battery still going strong after 3 weeks.
If you buy this camera you will not regret it!

Something special comes along. I know there is probably no such thing as as Dud D-SLR, but this one is top of-the-heap. The staggering ISO is beyond belief for wildlife and bird photos. I thought my D300 & 700 were the Bees knees, but this?? And it does Vid should you be into that.

Comments about Nikon D3s Digital SLR Camera Body:

i used to be a canon man, using a 1d mk3, 70-200 2.8 & a 17-40 f4, 24-70 2.8, most of my pap work colleges used nikon d3, etc, i was intending to buy the 1d mk4 when it came out until i went to the nikon d3s exhibition, i was bowled over with the d3s and the new 70-200 2.8 nikon. The three things that made my mind up to change from canon to nikon were 1, full frame on the d3s(which the 1dmk4 wont have being not a full frame camera) 2, the high iso on the d3s and No.3 the speed of the auto focas on the 70-200 2.8 (thats the mk2 the new one) also the image quality was unbelievable, so now my bag contains the d3s, the new 70-200 2.8, the 24-70 2.8, sb900, and the 80-400 nikon. to round this up there is no comparison, the d3s blows the canon 1dmk3 out of the water full stop .

An improved D3 but at a cost

            By Crispsting

            See all my reviews

Comments about Nikon D3s Digital SLR Camera Body:

Hired a D3s for a week and wanted to compare it to my existing D3. I already own a D3 and a D90 so I have used video and am very already aware how good the D3 is, so the D3s has to do a lot to impress.

The major differences between the D3 and the D3s is that the D3s has a new sensor, higher ISO and movie taking facilities.

Taking each difference independently. 1. New sensor. Well I didn;'t expect to see much difference but there does appear to be a different colour cast. If anything it gave stronger blues, which I like being a sports photographer where skys can be quite a bit of my image.

            2. Higher ISO. I need a high ISO for shooting night games under floodlights.I use 3200 at Roots Hall since their floodlights are not ppwerful. result the D3 does the job but there can be noticeable noise. Now with the D3s under floodlights at 3200 there is a major difference. Images appear sharper and no noticeable noise. Big improvement in my eyes.

            3. Video. To be honest I am not the worlds best vidiographer. Then again if you were you would not be using the D3s I suppose. I have used it on my D90 and I like it. But it does sem a strange choice on what is I claim is a sports camera. It works ok but is nowhere s good as a £300 camcorder and the Kodak which I have reviewed would give it a run for its money. However, since it does allow 5 minute segments of video its really there to complement the camera/

The big question, would I sell my D3 and buy a D3s. In one word. No. Its a great camera but the additional £1,000 to £1,500 really is too big a price to pay for the advantages of the camera over my D3.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Nikon D3s Digital SLR Camera Body:

I bought this camera and the 70-200 2.8 lens to go with my D3 and 28-70 2.8.
The D3s and a 2.8 lens are a superb combination for a professional photographer who need to work in low light. The high ISO settings have enabled me to capture hand-held images which have been impossible in the past.
My main work is reportage weddings, and this kit is going to make my job so much easier.
The 70-200 f2.8 Image Stabilizer lens on the D3s will make capturing close-ups of the guests in a dimly lit church simple. There is virtually no grain on my test images up to 64,000 ISO, and I'd be happy to print these images up to A3.
If you are a working professional photographer and can afford it, BUY ONE TODAY, you will not regret it.
