The key features of the Nikon D3X

Nikon D3x - Perfect pixels
The Nikon FX-format CMOS sensor on the Nikon D3x digital SLR features 24.5 effective megapixels covering an area of 35.9 x 24.0 mm. Each pixel characteristic has been optimised to provide a higher S/N ratio and wider dynamic range by securing a greater amount of light received by each pixel. This means that loss of highlights and shadows is reduced and smoother tone reproduction with minimised noise ensured.

Nikon D3x - Superb autofocus
Ensuring extremely accurate single-point dynamic tracking for fast moving subjects in low-light, the Nikon D3x features the acclaimed MultiCAM3500FX 51-point autofocus system.

Nikon D3x - EXPEED image processing
Nikon's comprehensive EXPEED image processing can also be found on the Nikon D3x, providing excellent image quality, speedy processing and a more economic power consumption.

Nikon D3x - Easy Live View
With a super quick start up time of only 12 milliseconds and 40ms shutter lag, the Nikon D3x delivers almost instant response. Likewise, Live View endeavours to make your workflow even easier, particularly for shooting in the studio when using the viewfinder might be impractical.

Nikon D3x - Incredible images
The latest developments in sensor design and image processing technology are incorporated into the Nikon D3x, giving it the capacity to produce files able to meet the demands of commercial and stock requirements. The Nikon D3x digital SLR produces 50MB 14-bit NEF (RAW) files, and using Capture NX2 software, the NEF files can be processed into medium format terrain; 140MB (16-bit TIFF-RGB). This means that the Nikon D3x produces images with fantastic clarity, with shadows and highlights with great tonal gradation.

Nikon D3x - Smooth handling
Featuring the same ergonomic body as the Nikon D3, the Nikon D3x is made of strong and durable magnesium alloy and sits comfortably in the hand with all controls easily accessible. The viewfinder is bright and uncluttered and delivers 100% coverage and comprehensive displays. The 3” LCD is high definition, granting you instant review of your photos in playback.

Nikon D3x - Savvy Scene Recognition System
The Nikon D3x recognises subjects and shooting scenes with the help of its 1,005-pixel RGB sensor that precisely controls exposure by recognising brightness and colours. The results are applied to control Autofocus, Auto Exposure, i-TTL Balanced Fill-flash and Auto White Balance.

Comments about Nikon D3x Digital SLR Camera Body:

I've always been a Nikon fan, the D3 being my previous and much-loved camera.

I was recently seduced into buying a Canon 5D Mk II + Pro lenses.
Big Mistake! Inferior image quality (everything needed sharpened in post production - never needed this with the D3!).

So I swapped this for a Canon 1D Mk IV and took this and a Nikon D3X for a "Test drive", taking a range of shots using equivalent Pro F2.8 lenses.....

No contest! The D3X images are superior throughout.
I agree with some comments about low light noise, but for me the affair with Canon is over and I will stick with my Nikon D3X and the superb quality images I'm producing for my clients.

The battery life is worth a mention too. Mine will comfortably power the camera and zoom lenses for over 900 images if fully charged.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Nikon D3x Digital SLR Camera Body:

If you can afford this, buy one.

I switched to Nikon two years ago with a D3. The transition to this is seamless. All my lenses flashes etc work and the detail in the files is extraordinary. The ability to make heavy crops can occasionally produce very striking results.

I should have waited for the D700 replacement perhaps but my first trip to New York was last Christmas not at some unknown future date.

My computer is due for an upgrade anyway but the need for more processing power is a fact of life across all applications. The new Sandisk 400x CF cards are available bundled with the camera at Warehouse Express as well.

Don't delay if you want the best that 35mm sensors can offer

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

    D3x - better than a D3?

    By Robo

    from Southampton

    See all my reviews

    Pros

    • easy to use - the same as the d3
    • good colour and contrast
    • it's a nikon

    Cons

    • about ¨£1000 over priced
    • increase in perceived resolution is small
    • less sensitive to light

    Best Uses

Comments about Nikon D3x Digital SLR Camera Body:

The D3x used with an ordinary Nikon lens like the 24-120mm and you cannot really see much difference compared with the D3. Use the excellent 50mm F1.4 or the 85mm F1.8 and zoom in and you can see the improved resolution, but it's tiny. Noise is about one and a half stops worse than the D3 but colour and contrast are improved slightly. I'm a wedding photographer and there is no benefit in using a D3x over a D3 to me. On balance, I prefer the improved low light performance of the D3 over the slight gain in resolution in the D3x

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
