Amateur Photographer Awards 2009
Product of the Year, High-End Digital SLR of the Year & AP Forum Product of the Year:
Nikon D700
There isn't another magazine that tests quite as much photographic equipment as Amateur Photographer. These awards are the result of a review of over 250 items and a year's worth of testing. The winners are the most outstanding products of the year.

Nikon D700 - 2 Year Warranty
Nikon 2 Year WarrantyTo take advantage of the extended warranty you are required to register the product within 30 days of purchase. The camera or kit must have been distributed by Nikon UK & Republic of Ireland, through an official UK retailer such as Wex Photographic.

Nikon D700 – Large image sensor
The D700 digital SLR delivers outstanding picture quality throughout its wide ISO sensitivity setting range, through the employment of a FX-format CMOS 36x23.9mm image sensor. The large pixel size that the full-frame FX format allows, ensures a higher signal-to-noise ratio, and the wide dynamic range and enhanced circuit-layout competently increases the strength of the electrical signal from the pixels.

Nikon D700 – Wide sensitivity
The wide sensitivity range of the Nikon D700 delivers excellent image quality at low sensitivity settings, and while at the high ISO settings, even up to 6400, the camera provides exceptionally low-noise characteristics. The D700 enables you to increase ISO sensitivity up to HI 0.3, HI 0.5, HI 0.7 and HI 1, the equivalent of ISO 12,800, and HI 2, the equivalent of ISO 25,600. You can also decrease it to Lo 1, the equivalent of ISO 100, Lo 0.7, Lo 0.5 and Lo 0.3, giving you greater versatility when shooting.

Nikon D700 – High speed performance
The D700 digital SLR has a speedy start-up time of only 0.12 seconds, with only a fractional shutter release time lag of 40ms – as seen on the flagship Nikon D3. The camera offers a continuous shooting speed of 5 frames per second when using the included rechargeable Li-ion EN-EL3e battery, and up to 8 frames per second with the optional Multi-Power MB-D10 battery pack and rechargeable Li-ion EN-EL4a/a or 8 AA size batteries. Compatible with high speed UDMA Compact Flash cards, the Nikon D700 is able to handle cards with a 35 megabyte recording speed.

Nikon D700 – Super Scene Recognition System
Nikon have made some improvements to their 1.005 pixel RGB light sensor, so that information from the sensor can be utilised to determine auto exposure, auto white balance and auto focus. The camera features 3D tracking in AF, so using the Scene Recognition System, the position of the subject can be tracked and the AF points are automatically shifted to match the movement of the subject within the frame. The Scene Recognition System also plays a significant part in the accuracy of the auto exposure and auto white balance detection.

Nikon D700 – Perfect Picture Control
Whether you are beginning your first journey with a DSLR or a seasoned user, the Nikon Control System enables you to create just the image you want by making adjustments to image sharpening, tone compensation, brightness, tone and saturation. The Picture Control System provides four fundamental setting options: Standard, Neutral, Vivid and Monochrome.

Nikon D700 – DX cropping mode
The Nikon D700 enables you to choose between FX format (36x24) or DX format (24x16). When in Auto DX crop (the default setting), the Nikon D700 will automatically select DX format when a DX Nikkor lens is attached.

Nikon D700 – 51-point high-density AF system
The Multi-CAM 3500FX autofocus sensor module which features 51 AF points is included in the Nikon D700, through which fifteen cross-type sensors located in the centre recognise and detect the subject, even with apertures as small as f/5.6. The way in which the 51 AF points work is linked to the Scene Recognition System. The Nikon Scene Recognition System aids the camera in delivering more advanced subject detection and focus tracking performance. You can select a single AF point from either the 51 or 11 focus points, and in dynamic-area AF mode, you can select from 9, 21 or 51 areas. The 51-point option allows you to utilise the 3D tracking mode, which automatically shifts the focus point to match the subject’s movement. The Nikon D700 also offers auto-area AF mode, giving greater priority to the subject’s position when selecting AF points.

Comments about Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body:

A great camera even now four years on, the D800 has a large file size in RAW and the video does not appeal. I think the D700 could run along side the D800 quite easily if you do not need the large pixel count.
Quality is super, bulid is solid, speed is also fast. All you need to obtain pro results.

Comments about Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body:

A living legend, as rightly suggested by others on here. 12 MP may well be the perfect trade between usable file sizes and image quality. No matter what the digital trimmings, it's the big analogue slice of silicon in the middle that makes any digital camera fly, and this sensor is a proven winner on all fronts.

Built to last, with the ergonomic on-body Nikon Pro camera control set. ISO quality that was unheard of in the days of 35mm film. Accurate AF and full compatibilty with most of the classic F lenses you might already have, and at their original focal lengths. Big, light gathering pixels that help make your image pop. It was a success on day one, and still a success now. Technology marches on, but this camera demonstrates that there's more to an image than pixel counts or digital features.

If there are downsides, they are the big shutter mechanism that isn't as discreet as the D300 or the D7000. It's also a heavy camera, especially if carried alongside multiple fast zooms.

In the digital age, it's not often that a camera garners praise from every corner, let alone consistently for three years at the pace of modern tech. It will be a future classic; invest in it while you can!

Comments about Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body:

Now that I am retired I can turn my photography to any aspect that takes my fancy. The D700 rises to the challenge every time.

The real advantage of the D700 over the D3 is weight. I've never bothered with the MB-D10 battery grip because you just end up with the weight of the D3 - just have a few ordinary batteries in you pocket, a battery change only take moments.

The D700 is a photographer's camera. It takes pictures and doesn't pretend to do anything else. The D700 doesn't have video. My feeling is if you want video get a video camera! It is a bit like using a hammer to put screws in, you can do it but a screw driver will do it better!

The D700 is probably one of the best cameras Nikon has ever made. It's not pretentious, it is an amazing work horse - it won't let you down.

Comments about Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body:

The D700 is still Nikon's best camera at this price-point. However, 12MP doesn't really cut it but if you can live with that, as a camera it is in a league of its own.

Comments about Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body:

My F100 was all the camera I wanted, & needed. It wasn't digital though and customers wanted digital. Never having picked up a digital camera before I ordered the D700 as soon as it was announced. On spec and the fact that the many 14mm superwide shots that had won competitions for me would still be at 14mm.
I've now run off over 60,000 shots with it. The metal bottom corners now a little shiny. It still astounds me and those who see it being used and the results. There's still things I'm exploring with it - ie the AF. I could never have afforded the D3. It's like comparing the F100 to the F5; in almost everything the D700 is equal to the D3. For the majority what it doesn't is more than offset by bearable size and weight and at least 1/3 less cost.
The pop-up flash surprised me, both by its inclusion and by its usefulness. Either as a trigger for a slave in the studio or for just about enough to get you by if the flashgun goes flat or for fill-in effect. It can pop up inadvertantly during busy handling though, which is a nuisance. The big, bright screen (compared to others its age) is great for showing subjects and models.
If there's a criticism, it's that you have to take your right hand off, and thus your eye, to adjust the ISO. That's on the left. Otherwise, the creative exposure balancing of the two wheels front and back become second nature and almost infinate. The D700 allows you to do your job seemlessly when you want it to, accompany you on your time off yet still not restrict you creatively.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body:

I thought about this purchase for months because I genuinely didn't really believe it would be as evolutionary for me as people said.

Let me put it in simple terms - shots on the D700 at ISO 1000 look identical to what my D90 managed at ISO 200 in terms of noise. If you don't believe me, go and try it for yourself before you buy. This fact alone is worth its price - it means that you can shoot everything sharper because you can of course increase the shutter speed with no loss of quality where the higher ISO is concerned... just awesome.

Comments about Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body:

I have been using my D700 for 18 months now for wedding, events, fashion shoots and portrait work. Awesome camera. I bought it as a backup body to my D3 after deciding to go FX format. No regrets at all.

Excellent ISO performance in low light and image quality, ruggedly built and plenty of camera set up customisation are the key factors for me. It is also more compact and lightweight than the D3 giving the same image performance.

Although the pop-up flash is fairly puny and gives horrible results as a light source, it works very well as a commander for remote speedlights. This is one area where it beats the no-flash D3.

The more expensive cameras (D3 series) have extras like dual card slots, faster frame rates, longer battery life, etc. These can be useful for professionals on more demanding shoots.

Definitely a great investment if you have (or plan to get) FX lenses.
