Comments about Nikon DK-17M Magnifying Eyepiece:
1.2x hardly seems worthwhile but the magnification seems much more in practice.I'd strongly recommend this, I use it with the rubber eyecup on my d800e
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The best help in accurate focussing
Makes a huge difference in ease and accuracy of focusing. Indispensable.
Better view, but limited field of view.
from Downham Market
I love the larger view, but I've found I need to get my eye in the right position otherwise the view can be cut off. With the standard eye piece I could put my eye anywhere around the opening and see the whole view including the information area. With the DK-17M I often find I'm missing part of the view which can be distracting and could mess with my composition. I am leaving it on for now because the magnified view looks that great, and I'll be adding the Hoodman HoodEye to hopefully get better results.
About Me Casual user, Professional
Even though it only magnifies by 0.2x it does make a difference, but after a using a couple of times you dont notice it any more,(took it off to clean once then you notice it)..Some people find it a bit of a nuisance having to move eye position to view the lighting info at the bottom of screen, but it does not bother me at all..I do think it should be shipped with better instructions from nikon on application when using with the dk-19 eyecup, I had to use youtube to get it right.I personally would not reccomend it for people with spectacles as i dont think you could get your eye in close enough to view the screen info, and definately not if using eyecup also...It is well overpriced for what it is, but I suppose nikon know people like me will pay it.Otherwise it is a good useful well made product..
Works well but comes off a bit easy...
I recently added this to my new 1.5 magnifying viewfinder on my D700 and found it to be a great addition. Great for those with glasses but also very useable for those without. It can also be folded back on itself when not required which is handy. My only issue is that it can come off quite easily. My can was hanging by my side on a Sniper strap and when I went to use it the camera rubbing on my leg cause it to come off. That said the benefits outweigh the negative.
This is good - it should be standard kit
With the normal eyepiece I found that I had to squint my eye upwards and to the side through the viewfinder. After an hours' photoshoot I really felt the eyestrain. This eyepiece helps work longer - more because it is set off the back by a few mils rather than the enlargement. I actually installed this a wee while ago and had forgotten all about it in the intervening 7000 photos - that must be a good sign.
It increases viewfinder magnification by approximately 1.2x and helps your manual focus in certain degree. It does help but not too much (mostly, make me think I can focus easier). I personally more rely on the focus indicator in the view finder. Also, if you are wearing glasses like me, you might get a little bit trouble seeing the whole scene through this eyepiece. Not too much difficult, but a bit inconvenient.

Such a simple idea you have to wonder why Nikon does not fit this as standard on all the D3 range!Boosts the perceived image size by a mag of 20% and makes it much easier to check focus and to read the in viewfinder display.May seem pricey for the size but compared to the camera you fit it to... itís peanuts & well worth that little extra ;-)
