Anything you want to photograph within 1 metre of your lens you can light with this kit. Amazing versatility in the box !!
Unfortunately Nikon chose to power these lights with a battery type not routinely stocked by high street stores and does not put a set of batteries in the kit. Be prepared !

I bought the R1 for macro work and it's excellent. I considered buying the Sigma ring flash but decided to stump up the extra cash as the R1 gives much more flexibillity. The accessories included in the kit make the R1 a must if you use a table top studio set up. The only downside is that it gets through batteries.

I use the Nikon R1 on a D300 and bought this as a light source primarily for macro work (bug photos in the wild). The two supplied SB-R200 flash guns can be mounted on the lens with filter thread adaptor rings supplied; or, the SB-R200s can be mounted on the supplied stands (which also come with standard tripod mounting threads). The whole thing is a great piece of kit and provides very satisfactory results. I have found it very easy to setup and use. I have also used this kit in conjunction with a SB-900 flash gun – no problems.

I have used the R1 kit in a wide range of lighting conditions, from virtual darkness to bright sunlight, and the system has worked faultlessly for me in all lighting conditions. All the components are very well engineered, and the whole kit comes in an impressive and convenient carrying/storage case.

I now wish I had purchased the R1C1 kit instead of the R1 kit. The R1C1 kit comes with a SU-800 Commander Unit in place of the IR filter supplied in the R1 kit, which is used to used to prevent the visible light from camera's pop-up flash interfering with the subject being photographed. The SU-800 Commander Unit is an IR source only, and provides for three groups of flash guns, whereas the in-built Commander in the D300 only provides for two groups; three groups are not essential, but a nice to have.

Would I recommend the R1 kit? Yes I would, but I would recommend seriously considering the R1C1 kit as a preference over the R1 kit because of the SU-800.

The wireless speedlight system on Nikons is always a bit of a scrap to get working properly, but once this is mastered the lack of wires a real bonus. Results are impressive, and it is expandable by adding 1 or 2 more SB200's. can be used in conjunction with other speedlights, ie to light the background etc.

Only bought this recently after many months of deliberation. Not had a chance to use it much yet due to the weather. However when I have managed to get out with it it has performed faultlessly, and I'm looking forward to some better weather to really get to grips with it.

Ordered Friday, received yesterday. A very impressive peice of kit with its own carry case. Very easy to use with outstanding results. OK its a little pricey but worth it. My only gripe and it is a small one, can't Nikon include a couple of batteries so one can start playing straight away!

I originally bought this for work - I'm a dentist, and wanted to be able to take close-up, shadow-free photos of teeth. I dithered a long time between buying this or getting a more conventional ringflash. I have to admit, I was put off by the cost - it's not cheap - but then thought of the hassle and inconvenience of twiddling buttons on a semi-compatible third-party flash while the poor patient dribbled with their mouth wide open made me stop being such a tightwad. This kit, which works faultlessly on my D300, works first time, every time. No dribbling. Much less stressful for both me and the patient. It's easy to set up, beautifully finished and robust enough for use by inexperienced operators. I've found, however, that it seems to find its way home quite frequently, and has given my photography a real boost. I can't recommend this product highly enough.
