The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX1 is the replacement of the Panasonic GF1 and is currently the newest addition to the Panasonic G range however there have been a couple of new upgrades. The GX1 features a 16.0 megapixel Live MOS sensor, a touch screen interface, an impressive ISO range of 160-28,000, full HD video recording (AVCHD or MP4 format), continuous shooting up to 20fps (at a lower resolution), a stereo mic, a comfortable hand grip, an electronic gauge level and four function (Fn) buttons which can be personalized to suit your needs. Combined with this advanced technology is the advanced AF system with high speed, high accuracy and touch operation. Having already owned a several Lumix cameras this GX-1 is a logical and welcome move forward in the range. All the features of the G3 in a more compact form albeit without the electronic viewfinder. The quick menu system is really good now with only a couple of omissions which can anyway be accessed via the main menu system or added to the function menus as desired. I bought the silver version, the first silver camera I have had since the 35mm film days. It's a beautiful gunmetal finish and compliments the camera more so, I think, than black. It has a metal body, bright LCD screen and an overall confidence inspiring feel to it. This is all confirmed by the superb picture quality and 'safe' exposure levels it produces. A very handy bonus for me, as I always struggle to get my horizons straight, is the level indication on the screen. Simple and unobtrusive it works a treat - why hasn't this appeared before, it was the deal clincher for me. There is an external viewfinder available which has a higher resolution than the previous model and, as an addition will be something I will be seriously considering.
In conclusion, not a revolution, but a very welcome and well thought our evolution of this fine camera range. I can't wait for third party lens makers to introduce some more 'interesting' glass for this perfectly sized format for me.
